4 unimpeachable reasons a Connor McDavid trade needs to happen
I'm sorry to pour salt on the wound, Edmonton Oilers fans, but this is the truth about Connor McDavid, who has now gone 0-2 in the Stanley Cup Final the past two years: it's time to trade the superstar. How can you trade a player who's done everything asked of him over the years and who has been the NHL's best player year after year? We'll get into the reasons, but even if they don't, the Oilers are facing an offseason full of questions that need answering after getting beat in six games, with the Florida Panthers dominating most of the way. Advertisement Let's dive in: 1. The Oilers haven't fully given him what needs If you're going to win the Stanley Cup, you need a goaltender to make key saves. The Oilers never really addressed that -- Stuart Skinner has been good, but not dominant. In years past, Mike Smith was in between the pipes. And this year, Skinner and Calvin Pickard split time. Not good. And while the defense has some names on paper like Darnell Nurse, Evan Bouchard and Mattias Ekholm, it felt like health and depth were questions. This stat tells you something: 2. Connor McDavid's contract is up after next season This is the elephant in the room. His $12.6 million comes off the books next year. What if he plays out next year without signing an extension, using it as leverage over the Oilers to finally win a Cup? And then he could leave without Edmonton getting anything back? Advertisement The Colorado Avalanche had this issue with Mikko Rantanen and got out with a massive trade. If there's any sign of McDavid being unhappy, it's better to get back assets than to lose him for nothing. 3. The Oilers are in a cap crunch Evan Bouchard is a restricted free agent who will need to be paid. Evander Kane needs a new deal after next season. And obviously, McDavid's free agency looms. So it might be harder to make those improvements to help McDavid out. Running it back with him and Leon Draisatl isn't the worst thing. But there are decisions to be made. 4. A divorce just might be best for both parties There are just times when a star -- even of McDavid's caliber -- and a franchise just never get there together, and a change of scenery for both parties is necessary. That might be the case here, where McDavid doesn't want to spend his prime when the Oilers' Stanley Cup window closes and needs years to open again. Advertisement We'll see.
