Lord Jagannath fell ill following water offerings by devotees on the full moon day of Jyeshtha month and was offered a special herbal drink for recovery for 15 days. After recovering, on the 15th day, the new moon day of the month of Ashadha, the deity regained health and appeared before the devotees on Wednesday morning.
The temple's chief priest Radhe Shyam Pandey adorned the deity with white garments and white flowers, offered Panchamrit, and performed a grand prayer ceremony.
After the ceremony, the Panchamrit was distributed among the devotees as prasad. On Wednesday, Lord Jagannath was offered parwal (pointed gourd) juice. On Thursday, the Lord's palanquin will be taken out, and from June 27 to 29, during the festival, Lord Jagannath, along with with his elder brother Balbhadra and sister Subhadra, will be seated on the chariot for Rath Yatra.
Rath Yatra Mela is one such rare festival when gods come out of their sanctum sanctorum and make a round of the city to meet their devotees.
Kashi witnessed the grandeur of Lord Jagannath's Rath Yatra for the first time in 1802 and since then, the annual festivities have continued. The tradition of Rath Yatra Mela is celebrated here resembling the Puri's Rath Yatra Mela.
The festival begins from Jyeshtha Purnima when Lord Jagannath falls ill due to excessive bathing after which he is given kaadha made of parwal and Tulsi for the next 14 days. The doors of the Jagannath Temple remain closed for devotees during this period.

After the deity recovers from the fortnight-long illness, the doors of the Jagannath Temple are opened for devotees on the 15th day. The idols of Lord Jagannath, along with his siblings, are placed on a palanquin and taken to Pt Beniram Bagh for a night stay.
By the next evening, the chariot reaches the Rath Yatra road. The idols are placed on the chariot after which devotees perform special aarti and offer prayers. After the end of the fair, the idols are taken back to the temple.
The three-day Rath Yatra Mela pulls a huge crowd of devotees. A splendid fair is organised with shops selling colourful articles, handicrafts, toys, and balloons. Flower men sell flowers, and holy basil (Jagannath's favourite) and the special attractions of the fair remain 'nankhatai' the special cookies.
Organiser of the Mela Deepak Shapuri, who along with his brother Alok Shapuri looks after Shri Jagannath Mandir Trust, said that all the rituals of the Rath Yatra festivities are similar to those performed at the Jagannath Temple of Puri. The tradition was started by the then chief priest of Puri Jagannath Temple, Tejonidhi Brahmchari, who moved to Varanasi from Puri.

Thousands witness reappearance of Lord Jagannath ahead of Rath Yatra
Puri, A day before the Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, thousands of devotees on Thursday thronged Odisha's Puri to witness the reappearance of sibling deities at the 12th-century shrine here. Thousands witness reappearance of Lord Jagannath ahead of Rath Yatra They reached the 'Singha Dwar' of the temple much before the sun rose to have a 'Nabajouban darshan' of the Lord Balabhadra, Devi Subhadra and Lord Jagannath on the 'Ratna Bedi' . The deities appear before the devotees after a fortnight. The public 'darshan' of the sibling deities was stopped after bathing rituals on June 11. "It is believed that the deities do not appear before devotees as they fall ill after the bathing rituals. They remain in quarantine at 'Anasar Ghar' for a fortnight before Rath Yatra," said Bhaskar Mishra, a researcher in the Jagannath culture. According to a Shree Jagannath Temple Administration official, the temple opened for devotees for 'Nabajouban Darsan' from 8 am to 10.30 am. On the 'Nabajouban Besha', the sibling deities wear a special youthful dress, and the ritual is held to celebrate the rejuvenation of Lord Jagannath. The day is also referred to as 'Netra Ustav' when the eyes of the idols are painted. Designated servitors perform this ritual, which is a secret affair in the temple, Mishra said. 'The devotees were first allowed to go inside the temple for a 'parmanik' darshan, which was held between 8 am and 9 am, and the general public darshan was conducted between 9 am to 10.30 am," the SJTA official said, adding that later the doors were closed for the day. SJTA chief administration Arabinda Padhee said, "The 'Nabajouban Darsan' has been completed smoothly with the support of all the servitors. We hope that the Rath Yatra will go smoothly." During the day, the three chariots would be parked in front of the shrine's main gate. "They will be pulled from Rath Khada in the afternoon. The rituals of parking the chariots will be performed," the SJTA official said. The construction of three wooden chariots- 'Taladwaja' , 'Debadalan' of Devi Subhadra and 'Nandighosh' of Lord Jagannath has been completed and is ready to roll on the Grand Road on June 27. On the occasion of the Rath Yatra, a massive deployment of 10,000 security personnel, comprising those in the Odisha Police and jawans of the Central Armed Police Forces , has been made. For the first time, commandos of the National Security Guards have also been deployed for the festival. 'NSG personnel will keep a watch on the festival from rooftops while around 275 AI-enabled cameras are placed at strategic positions in Puri town for the mega event," Odisha DGP Y B Khurania said, adding that special plans are chalked out for crowd management, traffic control, health services and other amenities. Adequate security arrangements have also been made in and around the Sri Gundicha temple, the place where the chariots with deities on board will be taken and parked for a week, the DGP said. Personnel of Odisha marine police, Coast Guard and Indian Navy have also been deployed to ensure coastal security. ISKCON Rath Yatra 2025: Spiritual significance The roots of the Jagannath Rath Yatra stretch back to between the 12th and 16th centuries. While one legend links the Yatra to Lord Krishna's visit to his maternal aunt's home, another attributes its origin to King Indradyumna, the legendary builder of the Jagannath Temple. The festival gained widespread recognition during the reign of the Gajapati dynasty of Odisha and has grown into a cultural and religious spectacle that represents devotion, unity, and tradition. The central event features Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra travelling nearly 3 kilometres in grand wooden chariots from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple, where they stay for nine days. Jagannath Rath Yatra Rituals The Jagannath Rath Yatra follows a sequence of age-old rituals steeped in devotion. It begins with Rath Snana, where the deities are ceremonially bathed with 108 pots of holy water, signifying spiritual purification. This is followed by Rath Pratistha, in which priests sanctify the newly crafted chariots through the chanting of Vedic mantras. The main event, Rath Yatra, sees thousands of devotees pulling the grand chariots of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra to the Gundicha Temple, where the deities stay for nine days. Their return, called the Bahuda Yatra, brings them back to the Jagannath Temple. The festival concludes with Niladri Vijaya, as the chariots are dismantled, marking the end of the divine journey and the promise of its return.
