Pampered Uber staff have huge meltdown over slight tweak to perks that are envy of most American workers

Uber employees revolted after the company's CEO announced a series of policy changes many American workers would consider more than generous.
Chief among the changes announced at a company-wide meeting last week was a new return-to-office mandate requiring staff to be in the office at least three days a week starting in June, a tweak to the current two-day mandate.
Uber also announced a revision to its sabbatical policy, saying that employees will be eligible for a month of paid leave after eights years of service, rather than the former five years.
Employee backlash was immediate, with frustration flooding internal forums - leading a top executive to condemn some comments as 'disrespectful.'
One forum 'essentially has been invaded by questions about the changes we've made,' CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said at the April 29 all-hands meeting, adding that employee concerns were eventually consolidated.
Many employees called the new policy tone-deaf, given Uber's recent financial success and the effectiveness of remote work over the past few years.
Khosrowshahi defended the decisions, saying they were not taken lightly but necessary for collaboration, innovation and long-term productivity.
'It's hardly a surprise that not everyone was thrilled about changes to remote work and sabbatical policies,' Uber told CNBC. 'But the job of leadership is to do what's in the best interest of our customers and shareholders.'
Khosrowshahi emphasized the importance of maintaining a connection to the physical world.
'Our business also exists in the real world,' Uber Chief People Officer Nikki Krishnamurthy added, 'on the streets of thousands of cities, and it's important we stay connected to the places we serve.'
Employees must now be present on designated 'anchor days' - Tuesdays and Thursdays - and compliance will be monitored at both the team and individual levels, Krishnamurthy said.
Employees voiced concerns about overcrowding at offices, citing limited meeting rooms and insufficient workspace on 'anchor days.'
'It's a challenge every anchor day to even find a place to sit with your team,' one worker commented.
To address those issues, Krishnamurthy announced that Uber is expanding its San Francisco and Seattle offices by 700,000 square feet, with new meeting rooms and cafeterias under construction through 2026.
The update to the sabbatical policy similarly drew groans from staffers.
'How is five years of service not a tenured employee? Especially when burnout is rampant in the org,' one highly-rated employee commented, adding they had already paid for a sabbatical trip.
'This isn't "doing the right thing" for your employees,' another worker reportedly wrote, according to the New York Post.
Khosrowshahi was blunt in addressing those criticisms.
'If you're here for a sabbatical and this change causes you to change your mind, it is what it is,' he said at the meeting.
'I'm sorry about that. The reason we want you to be here is the impact on the company. The learning here. We recognize some of these changes are going to be unpopular with folks. This is a risk we decided to take.'
Though the benefit still exists, the change has fueled speculation that Uber may be trying to push out long-tenured workers.
'It has nothing to do in terms of a need to drive attrition or layoffs,' Khosrowshahi responded when asked whether the move was a covert strategy to prompt voluntary exits. 'None of that is planned. The business is operating really, really well. But listen, good isn't good enough for us. We have to be great as a company.'
After the meeting, Krishnamurthy issued a memo condemning some of the employee remarks made during the session, claiming they 'crossed the line into unprofessional and disrespectful.'
'That's not OK, and we will be speaking with the employees who made them,' she wrote.
'Through good times and bad, we are open with each other. Yet when we see behavior like this, it makes it harder to continue being open in the same way.'
Uber's decisions reflect a broader shift in the tech industry, where several major firms have scaled back remote work.
Companies including Amazon, Dell, JPMorgan Chase, IBM and Google have all pushed for a return to in-person work, citing the value of face-to-face collaboration.
Google recently warned employees they could lose their jobs if they fail to comply with its three-day office attendance requirement, TheStreet.com reported.

Last week, fans of Chelsea and Manchester City, the English sides heading to the Club World Cup, received emails informing them that, as they had purchased tickets promptly, they would be receiving a 'partial refund as a token of appreciation for your early commitment and support'. One Chelsea supporter, who bought six tickets for the last-16 tie and four for the final, received $596 (£440) back. NAPERVILLE, Illinois, June 8 (Reuters) - Speculators dug deeper into bear territory last week across U.S. grain and oilseed futures, and with this time of year known to feature plenty of uncertainties, investors must keep their eyes glued on upcoming weather forecasts for the U.S. Corn Belt. In the week ended June 3, money managers' combined net short position across U.S. grain and oilseed futures and options surpassed 400,000 contracts, up more than 90,000 on the week. That marks their most bearish collective position since early September and their most bearish open to June in eight years. Just four months ago, the combined net long topped out at 300,000 contracts. Last week's move was driven by heavier selling in corn, soybeans and soybean oil. Money managers maintained bullish CBOT soybean oil bets through the week ended June 3, but they slashed their net long futures and options contracts by 22,000 to 31,990 contracts due to negative sentiment on the U.S. biofuels front. Money managers nearly erased bullish bets in CBOT soybean futures and options, reducing their net long to 8,601 contracts from 36,697 a week earlier. Funds' bearish soymeal position remained near-record large as prices have traded sideways over the last several weeks, and they also maintained sizable net shorts across the wheat flavors. Last week's net selling in corn was primarily driven by a large wave of new gross short positions, a trend that has been present in six of the last seven weeks. As of June 3, money managers' net short in CBOT corn futures and options hit a nine-month high of 154,043 contracts, up from 100,760 a week earlier. Recent heavy speculative selling in corn comes against the backdrop of a wildly strong U.S. export program and similarly robust U.S. ethanol grind. These factors have pared 2024-25 U.S. corn ending stock predictions significantly over the last year. However, the futures market does not seem to be reflecting a terribly tight situation. Late last week, CBOT July corn opened up a discount to December corn , not suggestive of imminent concern over supplies. Funds' building bearishness in corn as well as the newly established market carry could be hinting at the expectation that last year's U.S. corn crop was larger than the U.S. Department of Agriculture stated. The agency's June 30 stocks report could potentially validate this notion. But in the meantime, traders will need to be watching the U.S. weather forecasts, which as of Friday suggested a potential dry spell for the western Corn Belt over the next two weeks. Heat risks were relatively low, though corn and soybean crop conditions are sitting at just average levels. In the week ahead, the market will be anticipating USDA's monthly supply and demand report on Thursday, and traders expect a further contraction in old-crop U.S. corn supply. All eyes will turn toward London on Monday, where top U.S. and Chinese officials will hold talks aimed at resolving trade disputes. The US treasury secretary, Scott Bessent, has warned California governor Gavin Newsom that he would be guilty of 'criminal tax evasion' if he withholds his state's tax payments to the federal government amid threats of a funding cut by Donald Trump. Newsom had threatened to cut tax payments to the federal government two days ago after reports that Trump was preparing huge federal funding cuts targeting Democrat-dominated California, including its state university system. 'Gavin Newsom is threatening to commit criminal tax evasion,' Bessent said in a post on X. 'His plan: defraud the American taxpayer and leave California residents on the hook for unpaid federal taxes.' Bessent continued: 'I am certain most California businesses know that failing to pay taxes owed to the Treasury constitutes tax evasion and have no intention of following the dangerous path Governor Gavin Newsom is threatening.' He described Newsom's comments as 'extremely reckless' and advised the governor to come up with a tax-cutting plan for California that mirrored Trump's federal tax cutting plan, 'instead of committing criminal tax evasion'. The treasury secretary's comments came after Newsom posted on Friday that 'Californians pay the bills for the federal government. We pay over $80 BILLION more in taxes than we get back. Maybe it's time to cut that off, Donald Trump.' The California governor linked to a CNN report that the Trump administration is preparing to cancel some federal funding for California and federal agencies had been directed to identify grants that could be withheld, including the University of California and California state university systems. In a statement on Friday, the White House spokesperson Kush Desai criticized California's energy, immigration and other positions as 'lunatic anti-energy, soft-on-crime, pro-child mutilation, and pro-sanctuary policies'. 'No taxpayer should be forced to fund the demise of our country,' Desai said, but he added that 'No final decisions, however, on any potential future action by the Administration have been made, and any discussion suggesting otherwise should be considered pure speculation.' Newsom and Trump are accustomed to a war of words, including threats to withhold funding. The administration recently cut $126m in flood prevention funding projects, and Trump has threatened 'large-scale fines' on the state after transgender athlete AB Hernandez competed in the long jump, high jump and triple jump events at the California Interscholastic Federation track and field championships. But the reported threat to cut off federal funding to California's university system appears to have pushed California officials into threats of retaliation. Soon before Newsom made his threat, California assembly speaker Robert Rivas described the rumored grant cancellations as 'unconstitutional and vindictive.' 'We're the nation's economic engine and the largest donor state, and deserve our fair share,' Rivas wrote. 'I'll use every legal and constitutional tool available to defend CA – we must look at every option, including withholding federal taxes.'
