Last Updated:
Diljit Dosanjh opens up about his Met Gala 2025 look, saying he cried envisioning Punjab's flag and Gurmukhi script on his back.
Diljit Dosanjh, who's currently facing backlash for working with Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in Sardaar Ji 3, has opened up about the emotional significance of his Met Gala 2025 look. The Punjabi actor-singer, in an interview with BBC Asian Network, revealed that his appearance at fashion's biggest night was all about showcasing Punjabi pride on the global stage.
Confident about his look, Diljit said, 'I knew it, when I go there, no one will have eyes on anyone else. Even if they show me less, when I go, no one else will be visible. I always had this belief that when I go, I'll look like a king." He also revealed how he had requested Cartier to give him a particular necklace. 'When I went to the Cartier showroom, I asked them, 'Will you give me that necklace. It belonged to us, and you just took it.' They had promised me then, but it was stuck in an exhibition, so it couldn't be sent," he added.
For Diljit, it wasn't just about making a style statement. 'I cried when I thought of my look, that I would wear an outfit with the Punjab flag on my back and Gurmukhi script written on it. That was a very big thought for me. It wasn't important that I go there; it was important that Punjab goes there, that the turban goes there. That thought alone made me cry."

Diljit also recounted an incident involving Shakira at the Met Gala. He explained how her elaborate dress helped him get through security with his kirpan, which was concealed under his cape. 'Shakira was ahead of me, and her dress had a lot of metal pins and such… I had the Kirpan under my cape… They checked Shakira but didn't check me."
Despite the ongoing Sardaar Ji 3 controversy, Diljit's Met Gala appearance has been widely praised as a bold and heartfelt tribute to his roots. The film, meanwhile, is scheduled for an overseas release only, given the current political climate between India and Pakistan.

He wrote, 'Desh pehle (Country first). Guys, as we all know, the relationship between India and Pakistan isn't going well right now. Yet some people continue to act irresponsibly. Before releasing any content that involves artists from across the border, they should think twice — especially when our nation's dignity is involved.'
