Enzo Maresca throws down the gauntlet to Cole Palmer as he reveals challenge he has set 'bored' star - after he hit out at Chelsea's style
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has challenged Cole Palmer to take the initiative in more games after their winning start at the Club World Cup.
Palmer appeared critical of the side's approach in their victory in the UEFA Conference League final last month, saying he got 'sick of getting the ball and going backwards and sideways'.
It was at that point he took control of the game against Real Betis in Wroclaw, creating two goals as the Blues came from behind to win 4-1.
Palmer was again influential as Chelsea began their challenge at FIFA's global summer tournament with a 2-0 win over LAFC in Atlanta on Monday.
'I had a short conversation with Cole and I said to him that I really like the way he was today,' Maresca told reporters. 'He took responsibility, showed initiative on the ball.
'He was trying to receive the ball, go one-v-one against players, and this is the Cole we expect.
'After the Conference League final, he said he was bored when receiving the ball, so he decided to do something different.
'The day after that interview, I said to him that he could do it from the first minute and why did he wait so long? Why not do the same after one minute?
'Today he was exactly doing that, and we are happy when he does that. I've said many times Cole is our best player, a top player, and hopefully he can continue to do the right things.'
Goals from Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez got Maresca's side off to a victorious start in Group D in front of a sparse crowd of 22,137 at the 71,000-capacity Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Their next outing is against Brazilian side Flamengo in Philadelphia on Friday.

'All our thoughts are with his family and loved ones, as well as with the fans of Olympique Lyonnais and football. 'Rest in peace, Bernard.' After hanging up his boots, Lacombe went on to manage Lyon - where he came through the ranks having been born in the city - for four years between 1996 and 2000, winning the Intertoto Cup in 1997. He would also spend 20 years as a special advisor to owner Jean-Michel Aulas, and was reportedly crucial to the retention of a number of the club's Brazilian players, such as Juninho. A Club World Cup game appeared to be set to reach a new low for poor attendance at the new-look FIFA club competition, with fewer than 1,000 fans in the stands ahead of a weather-delayed kick-off on the third day of the competition. The expanded and relaunched tournament has been plagued by concerns over interest and ticket sales in the build-up to its opening match between Lionel Messi 's Inter Milan and Al-Ahly on Sunday - despite massive investment from the governing body as it seeks to make the Club World Cup the premier international tournament. Chelsea 's opening match against Los Angeles FC, played at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, was more than three-quarters empty with just 22,000 fans inside the 75,000-capacity venue. General admission tickets were on sale for £38 but such was the lack of interest that the entire top tier of the stadium was closed. As a result, ticket prices are being slashed across the competition, with local college students able to pick up a seat at the tournament opener for as little as $20. 'The appetite speaks for itself: fans from over 130 countries have already purchased tickets. 'The top 10 markets are led by the United States, followed by Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Canada, France, Japan, Switzerland, Germany and Portugal - a clear sign of global anticipation and reach.' But not everyone has been won over by FIFA's overtures, with LaLiga president Javier Tebas hitting out at the competition on Tuesday. 'My goal is to ensure there are no more Club World Cups, that's very clear,' the 62-year-old said. 'There's no need for yet another competition that moves money to a sector of clubs and players and comes from somewhere. 'There's no more money here; we have to maintain the ecosystem and eliminate it. 'Keep it as it was before, which was a weekend. There's no way, neither in terms of dates, nor economics, nor maintaining the sustainability of football.' The LaLiga president admitted he had watched 25 minutes of Chelsea's 2-0 win over Los Angeles but criticised the fixture for looking like 'a preseason friendly', adding 'I didn't see any intensity'.
