TNPL Drama! R Ashwin Argues With Umpire, Slams Bat After Sai Kishore Gets Him Out

Serious drama unfolded in the TNPL as R Ashwin was angry at the umpire for giving him out LBW off R Sai Kishore's bowling when the ball had clearly pitched outside the leg-stump.
Dindigul Dragons captain and India legend Ravichandran Ashwin lost his cool after getting out to his opposite number, IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans' R Sai Kishore in the fifth match of the Tamil Nadu Premier League 2025 on Sunday (June 8) at the SNR College Cricket Ground, Coimbatore.
The drama happened in the fifth over of the first innings. Sai Kishore pitched a loopy ball on a good length on the leg-stump and Ashwin went down to sweep it but missed as the ball from the left-arm spinner turned sharply. The bowler appealed and the umpire raised his finger, much to the dismay of Ashwin.
The batter immediately went to argue with the umpire, who turned his back to him. Angered, he slammed his bat on his pads before walking off. Watch the video here:

Ashwin's anger was perhaps justified because one look at the replay is enough to suggest that the ball pitched well outside the leg-stump, which is what the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star seemed to indicate. Luck just hasn't been on Ashwin's side since he announced his retirement from all formats late last year, with his IPL numbers also falling drastically in the recent season: seven wickets in nine matches at 40.42.
The younger and in-prime-form Sai Kishore, on the contrary, has come off an excellent year with the Gujarat Titans, picking 19 wickets in 15 innings at 20.68. He was unlucky not to be selected for the ongoing Indian tour of England, even for the 'A' side, which is playing two unofficial Tests against England Lions.
Coming back to the match, the Tamizhans romped to a comfortable victory against the Dragons. The promising Shivam Singh top-scored with a 30 in the first inning,s but another wicket for Sai Kishore, four scalps for pacer Esakkimuthu A and three strikes for spinner M Mathivannan reduced them to 93/10.
In reply, after opener Amit Sathvik got out early, wicketkeeper Tushar Raheja scored a brisk 39-ball 65 to see off the chase in the 12th over with nine wickets to spare.

Sreeja finds a purple patch in Jaipur's pink

Almost a year ago, Sreeja Akula was flying high. While achieving a rare feat of an Indian paddler featuring in the singles round-of-16 at the Olympics (she and Manika Batra both made it to the women's singles pre-quarterfinals at Paris 2024), Sreeja was also on the brink of breaking into the top-20 world rankings. But soon after returning from Paris, Sreeja was diagnosed with a stress fracture that took longer than expected to heal. Since then, she hasn't been as dynamic on the world stage as she was in the 12 months leading to the Olympics. But the diminutive girl from Hyderabad has revelled in the pink jersey of Jaipur Patriots in the Ultimate Table Tennis. After missing the fifth season due to the stress fracture, Sreeja has remained unbeaten in season six – Zeng Jian of Goa Challengers is the only other unbeaten singles player this season – to spearhead Patriots' smooth ride into the semifinals. Sreeja Akula keeps her red-hot streak alive to cap off a MASSIVE night for the Jaipur Patriots 🔥♨️ 📺 Live on JioHotstar and the Star Sports network. 🎫 Tickets on — Ultimate Table Tennis (@UltTableTennis) June 11, 2025 'UTT has definitely helped because I have played different opponents and mixed doubles as well,' Sreeja told The Hindu. 'I have also been doing my fitness, continuing my routine every day. But I also wanted to play a number of matches, and this league is a very good stage where I can try different things and contribute to my team.' Sreeja in singles at UTT season six bt Maria Xiao (Dabang Delhi) 2-1; bt Poymantee Baisya (Chennai Lions) 3-0; bt Bernadette Szocs (U Mumba) 2-1; bt Ayhika Mukherjee (Jaipur Patriots) 2-1; bt Zion Lee (Pune Jaguars) 2-1. While Patriots – who had a forgettable UTT debut last season without Sreeja – started on a disastrous note, Sreeja was the only bright spot in their campaign-opener against Dabang Delhi TTC. Groomed in confidence with a close win against left-handed Maria Xiao, Sreeja went on to account for Bernadette Szocs, the World No. 12. Sreeja is confident that the three weeks at UTT will help her in her future endeavours, starting with the US Open next month and heading into three major Smash events on the world circuit. 'It took some time for me to recover, it's all about ups and downs, and I just have to accept it and take the learnings from those matches and move on. I have tried to figure out what went wrong, and I am getting back to my best. I am confident that I will be in the zone pretty soon'.

Teams will be eager to recalibrate ahead of the Salem leg

The big talking point heading into the Salem leg of the ninth edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) is the form of defending champion Dindigul Dragons and last season's runner-up Lyca Kovai Kings. The two have endured a disappointing start to the season, with no wins to their names, and find themselves at the bottom of the standings. The action-packed first leg has surprisingly been far from a run-fest, with only one team (Chepauk Super Gillies 212 for seven vs Nellai Royal Kings) breaching the 200-run mark so far. Dindigul Dragons captain and former India international R. Ashwin added to the drama with his dissent over an umpiring decision during his team's clash against the Tiruppur Tamizhans. Among the other highlights was pacer R. Sonu Yadav's hat-trick for the Nellai Royal Kings against the Trichy Grand Cholas. With all eight teams having played two matches each, four-time champion Chepauk Super Gillies and the in-form SKM Salem Spartans have emerged as the early front-runners, currently occupying the top two spots on the points table. The second leg gets underway here on Friday, and the teams will be eager to recalibrate their strategies and adapt to the new conditions. Another thrilling week beckons.
