PPL's MD inaugurates CERDT at UET
LAHORE: MD & CEO, Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) Imran Abbasy as Chief Guest, formally inaugurated the Center of Excellence for Research, Development and Training (CERDT) at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, a landmark initiative funded by PPL under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.
With a Rs51.1 million grant by PPL over three years (2022–25), the CERDT is a flagship academia-industry collaboration aimed at strengthening Pakistan's indigenous technical expertise and research ecosystem in the oil and gas sector. The funding covered the construction, furnishing, and procurement of cutting-edge simulation and laboratory equipment for the Centre.

Diplomatic travel: Emirates signs MoU with Italian Consulate
KARACHI: Emirates, the world's largest international airline, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Consulate of Italy in Karachi to seamlessly facilitate diplomatic travel and promote cultural and business ties between Pakistan and Italy in Karachi. The MoU was signed by Mohammed Alhashmi, Emirates' Vice President for Pakistan, and Fabrizio Bielli, the Consul of Italy, during a signing ceremony held at the Consulate in Karachi. Under the agreement, Emirates will become the preferred airline for official travel by the Italian Consulate. The airline will offer exclusive benefits to diplomatic passengers, including preferential fares, cargo rates, and additional baggage allowances. Emirates will also explore opportunities to support diplomatic and cultural events organized by the Italian Consulate, as well as promotions for business engagements in Italy related with the Italian Consulate. In return, the Italian Consulate will recommend Emirates to individuals and entities engaging with the Consulate for travel to and from Italy. Mohammed Alhashmi, Emirates' Vice President for Pakistan said, 'We are pleased to collaborate with the Consulate of Italy in Karachi. Italy is an important market for us, and we have been operating there for over three decades. This MoU reflects our shared commitment of enhancing and fostering stronger cultural and economic ties between our nations. We look forward to facilitating travel for personnel in Italy's diplomatic mission, so they have the opportunity to explore our diverse network as they strengthen their cultural connections in Pakistan.' ‘First Licensing System' at PMDC regional office in Lahore launched
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), to facilitate medical/dental graduates and practitioners, has launched for the first time, the Licensing System at the PMDC regional office in Lahore, Punjab. According to an official communiqué, the digital initiative targets to simplify and expedite the registration process for graduates and medical and dental professionals and specialists, enabling them to complete their registrations quickly and securely. The system promotes greater transparency, efficiency, and accessibility by eliminating traditional hurdles and significantly reducing processing times. One of the most notable benefits is that it saves medical and dental practitioners' valuable time and effort by eliminating the need to travel from Lahore to the Islamabad head office to resolve their queries. Furthermore, doctors facing difficulties in filling out the online portal application will be assisted by the staff available at the regional centre who is equipped to help with the submission process. All registration services will now be available at the PMDC Lahore Regional Office. These services include full registration, license renewal, issuance of Good Standing Certificates, provision of duplicates, and updates or changes to practitioner records, shall be facilitated except for matters related to teaching and practical experience. The Lahore office will also assist with the submission and processing of online applications, as well as resolving related queries for the above categories. Original certificates will be dispatched to practitioners via TCS courier service, while a copy of the certificate may also be provided to medical and dental professionals for their convenience. Prof Dr Rizwan Taj, President of PMDC, emphasised the significance of this development by stating: 'This is a step towards accelerating the licensing process through PM&DC's regional offices. By launching this initiative, we are empowering our doctors to begin their professional journeys without unnecessary delays.' He added that Phase-I has been launched in Lahore to serve practitioners in Punjab. The system will be expanded nationwide in the coming months. Senate body approves IT (Second Amendment) Bill 2025
Islamabad: The Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue Thursday approved Income Tax (Second Amendment) Bill 2025, seeking report on teachers' salary tax deductions. The Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue, chaired by Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, approved the Income Tax (Second Amendment) Bill 2025. The Committee focused on the withdrawal of tax exemptions for salaried individuals particularly teachers whose salaries faced significant deductions. Senator Mohsin Aziz suggested expediting the refund or adjustment process. Senator Saleem Mandviwalla directed the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to submit a detailed report identifying affected teachers and the status of their refunds, emphasizing that failure to return deducted amounts undermines the law's intent. The FBR Chairman assured compliance and supported the committee's recommendations. The committee also reviewed budgetary allocations and utilization under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for 2024 25. While the Planning Commission raised concerns over lapsed project budgets, Finance Ministry officials clarified no funds had lapsed and over 50 percent of authorized funds had already been disbursed. Senator Mandviwalla requested written figures and recommended summoning the Finance Ministry and relevant departments to ensure transparency. In discussions on the proposed barter trade mechanism between Pakistan and Iran, Senator Mandviwalla inquired about the absence of a formal net-off settlement mechanism and urged concerned departments to develop a clear procedure. The committee emphasized relaxing existing restrictions and expanding the list of tradable items. Senator Mandviwalla asked stakeholders to submit proposals for new items and directed authorities to resolve operational issues such as limited customs hours and storage space at NLC terminals in Quetta.
