China removes senior general, naval chief & top scientist in military

Business Standard10 hours ago

The purge of China's powerful defence and security establishment continued as top military officials, including a senior general, chief of navy and a nuclear scientist, were expelled from the national legislature on Friday.
General Miao Hua along with Vice Admiral Li Hanjun, chief of staff of the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), and Liu Shipeng, deputy chief engineer of China National Nuclear Corporation, have been removed from the National People's Congress (NPC), the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported.
Li is the latest of a string of PLA generals and a handful of defence industry executives to have been implicated in a sweeping crackdown in the military, the Post reported.
Both have been stripped of their membership of the legislature, the report said.
State-run Xinhua news agency reported that the standing committee of the NPC, which concluded its session here on Friday, also voted to remove top General Miao Hua from his position as a member of the Central Military Commission (CMC), the overall high command of the Chinese military, headed by President Xi Jinping.
Miao, the youngest general in the Chinese military hierarchy, has been under probe for serious violations of discipline since November last year. He was dismissed from the NPC in April this year.
Miao was also director of the Political Work Department of the CMC, a role critical in managing Communist Party ideology and personnel changes within the People's Liberation Army (PLA).
His career advanced significantly after Xi assumed power, leading to roles in the Chinese Navy as a political commissar and eventually becoming the PLA's youngest admiral.
The defence ministry said Miao was being investigated for suspected serious violations of discipline, a phrase used as a euphemism for corruption.
Since he took over power towards the end of 2012, 72-year-old Xi has carried out massive purges in the country's over two-million-strong military, removing or punishing dozens of senior generals for corruption and indiscipline.
Those who were punished included two defence ministers as Xi consolidated his hold on the armed forces and the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC).
Xi has repeatedly emphasised the importance of party loyalty among PLA officials to strengthen ideological control and support China's goal of becoming a military superpower.
Miao is the second CMC member to be removed from his position since the current leadership took office in 2022.

Delhi: Man on scooter dies after throat slit by Chinese manjha

A 22-year-old man died after his throat was slit by a banned Chinese manjha — a sharp string used for flying kites — while he was riding his scooter near Bara Hindu Rao Hospital in North Delhi on Friday evening. Chinese manjha, which is coated with glass, metal, or other sharp materials, has been banned in the Capital since 2017. Police said the victim, Yash Goswami, a resident of Karawal Nagar, was on his way home when he came in contact with the sharp thread near the Rani Jhansi flyover. 'Goswami suffered a deep cut on his neck, causing him to collapse on the spot. He was rushed to the hospital by passersby, where he was declared dead on arrival,' a police officer said. Goswami used to run an auto parts shop in Karol Bagh. He was alone at the time of the incident but was wearing a helmet, the officer added. Police said a case under Section 106(1) (causing death by negligence) of the BNS has been registered against unknown persons at Bara Hindu Rao police station. 'The crime scene was inspected by the forensics team, and strands of Chinese manjha were recovered from the body as well as from the scooter,' another officer said. This is not the first incident of Chinese manja claiming lives in the Capital. In July 2023, in West Delhi's Paschim Vihar, a seven-year-old girl lost her life after the thread slit her neck while she travelling with her parents on a scooter. Last year, in August, a 47-year-old Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Delhi Traffic Police and a 34-year-old businessman were injured by the abrasive string in two separate but similar incidents in Northeast Delhi. Cracking down on the illegal stocking of Chinese manja, the Delhi Police Crime Branch had conducted a raid in Rohini in August 2024. During the raid, they recovered around 12,000 reels of illegal Chinese manja and arrested three people for stocking it. Police also stated that they had arrested 79 individuals and registered 78 FIRs across various parts of Delhi in connection with the possession of Chinese manja. The officer noted that from time to time, police conduct raids against the illegal manufacturing and sale of the dangerous strings.

Mumbai-based businessman stabbed with screwdriver in Bengaluru for sacking horse trainer; 3 held

Bengaluru: In a dramatic act of revenge straight out of a thriller, a 47-year-old Mumbai-based businessman was attacked with a screwdriver in the parking lot of a star hotel, following a year-old fallout with his former horse trainer. The injured businessman is Suchit Jayaraj Shah, a resident of Patan Jain Mandal Marg near Marine Drive and a horse-racing enthusiast. He had sacked horse trainer Jasbhir Singh a year ago, allegedly over professional differences. Since then, tensions simmered and Jasbhir is said to have threatened Shah of dire consequences. Shah had checked into the hotel with friend Sameer to attend a horse-racing event at Bengaluru Race Course. Jasbhir, upon learning of Shah's visit, came to Bengaluru with his younger brother Sunny and an aide named Billa and checked into the same hotel. As he was sleeping, he did not receive the call. Then the hotel's reception called the landline in Shah's room and informed him that Sunny was waiting for him at the reception. Shah and Sameer went to the reception and asked Sunny why he'd called him. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Thị trường có dấu hiệu suy thoái không? Sunny and Billa got into an argument with Shah and told him to come outside the hotel or they'd kill him. Shah told police they took him to the parking lot where Sunny hit him on the head. When Sameer tried to rescue Shah, Billa grabbed him from behind. Sunny claimed Shah had ruined his (Jasbhir's) reputation. He took out a screwdriver and tried to stab him. Shah collapsed on the ground, and people in the hotel rushed to the spot after hearing his cries for help, police said. While Sunny and Billa escaped from the premises, Shah was taken to a nearby hospital. He later lodged a complaint. Cops swung into action and arrested Jasbhir, Sunny and Billa. The trio claimed Shah deliberately sacked Jasbhir from work and bad-mouthed him. A case has been registered under BNS Sections 109 (attempt to murder). A senior police officer said Shah is out of danger and has returned to Mumbai.

Trump Says He Will Get Conflict Solved With North Korea

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said he will "get the conflict solved with North Korea." At an Oval Office event where he highlighted his efforts to resolve global conflicts, Trump was asked whether he had written a letter to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, as was reported this month. Trump did not directly answer the question, but said: "I've had a good relationship with Kim Jong Un and get along with him, really great. So we'll see what happens. "Somebody's saying there's a potential conflict, I think we'll work it out," Trump said. "If there is, it wouldn't involve us." Seoul-based NK News, a website that monitors North Korea, reported this month that North Korea's delegation at the United Nations in New York had repeatedly refused to accept a letter from Trump to Kim. Trump and Kim held three summits during Trump's 2017-2021 first term and exchanged a number of letters that Trump called "beautiful," before the unprecedented diplomatic effort broke down over U.S. demands that Kim give up his nuclear weapons. In his second term Trump has acknowledged that North Korea is a "nuclear power." The White House said on June 11 that Trump would welcome communications again with Kim, while not confirming that any letter was sent. North Korea has shown no interest in returning to talks since the breakdown of Trump's diplomacy in 2019. It has, instead, significantly expanded its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs, and developed close ties with Russia through direct support for Moscow's war in Ukraine, to which Pyongyang has provided both troops and weaponry.
