KK Mart blames supplier after Jakim says halal logo misused for ‘ham and cheese sandwich' sold by convenience chain

Yahoo13-01-2025

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 13 — KK Mart today said its logo was misused by a supplier of a 'ham and cheese sandwich' sold by the chain, which religious authorities have found to be using the halal logo without authorisation.
According to Malaysiakini, KK Mart said it had depended on the supplier — Shake and Bake Cafe Sdn Bhd — for the halal certification of the product, and said it had lodge a police report against the company and will pursue legal action.
Separately, the Department of Islamic Development (Jakim) said its Halal Management Division conducted an inspection of the product with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) following complaints online.
'The inspection revealed that the product does not have a Malaysian Halal Certification and the producing company is not a SPHM certificate holder,' Jakim said.
'Therefore, the company's action of printing the Malaysian halal logo on the product label constitutes a violation under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011 [Act 730], specifically the Trade Descriptions (Certification and Marking of Halal) Order 2011, for which legal action has been taken by KPDN.'

Earlier today, Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh accused KK Mart of misleading consumers with the 'ham and cheese sandwich', questioning how the item was certified halal.
He had also asked to Jakim to clarify if the food item was halal as claimed.

Malaysian finance ministry warns against 'false' e-wallet subsidy scheme posts

"The following are the qualifying conditions for RM300 e-wallet subsidy for all groups that will be provided every month of 2025. Check now!" reads a Malay-language Facebook post on May 10. It includes a graphic with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's "Malaysia Madani" policy framework logo and text that repeats the false claim. The post includes a link to an external website masquerading as the website for Touch 'n Go, a Malaysian digital payment and e-wallet service, where users are asked to input their national identity card and phone numbers to "check eligibility" for the purported subsidy. Similar posts surfaced elsewhere on Facebook, but the Malaysian government is not disbursing aid through e-wallets in 2025. The Ministry of Finance rejected the claims in a statement on its official Facebook page on May 4, calling the posts "false" (archived link). "If you're not sure, don't click and avoid being a victim of fraud!" it said. Malaysia announced it would allocate 13 billion ringgit in its 2025 budget as cash aid to lower-income groups (archived link). It is split into two categories -- one for groceries that is credited directly to a recipient's identity cards and another cash aid scheme disbursed in four phases to the recipient's bank account (archived link). The finance ministry also urged the public to go through the official channel -- Inland Revenue Board -- to check their eligibility for the cash aid (archived link).

Rupee caught between US dollar weakness, lack of directional bias

By Nimesh Vora MUMBAI (Reuters) -The Indian rupee is likely to open slightly weaker on Tuesday and is expected to hold a narrow range through the day amid a struggling U.S. dollar and the lack of momentum on either side. The 1-month non-deliverable forward indicated an open in the 85.40-85.44 range, versus the close of 85.3825 in the previous session. Non-deliverable forwards suggest the rupee is unlikely to benefit from the up-move in regional peers. The offshore Chinese yuan (CNH=) inched higher past the 7.20 level against the dollar, while the Korean won, Malaysian ringgit, and Indonesian rupiah each rose about 0.3%. "Yesterday, the situation was reverse — the rupee outperformed most Asian peers," said a currency trader at a Mumbai-based bank, adding that overall, the rupee was "simply lacking direction". "We're in a phase where speculative interest has diminished, leading to largely range-bound sessions. Any meaningful move is likely to come only post the two key events on Friday.' On Friday, the Reserve Bank of India is expected to deliver its third successive interest rate cut - a 25-basis-point cut - on the back of benign inflation data. Later in the day, the release of the U.S. non-farm payrolls report for May will offer fresh insight into the health of the U.S. labour market amid ongoing tariff-related uncertainty. Softer non-farm payrolls data could reinforce expectations of a potential Federal Reserve rate cut, keeping the dollar index under mild downward pressure, HDFC Bank said in a note. The U.S. dollar has been under pressure for much of the year, weighed down by policy uncertainty and, more recently, concerns over the fiscal deficit. The dollar index (=USD) is currently trading just 1% above its year-to-date low. Concerns about tariff-related turbulence has resurfaced, adding to the dollar's headwinds. U.S. President Donald Trump signalled plans to double tariffs on steel and aluminium, while U.S.-China trade relations remain uncertain. KEY INDICATORS: ** One-month non-deliverable rupee forward at 85.54; onshore one-month forward premium at 14.25 paisa ** Brent crude futures up 0.5% at $65 per barrel ** Ten-year U.S. note yield at 4.45% ** As per NSDL data, foreign investors sold a net $585.4 million worth of Indian shares on May 30 ** NSDL data shows foreign investors sold a net $712.3 million worth of Indian bonds on May 30
