Restoration of Saints' 'punishment car' is like 'model kit'
Students who are rebuilding a unique rugby "punishment" car have likened it to a "model kit" - and say much progress has been made.The three-wheeled Reliant Rialto was discovered in Harlestone Firs, near Northampton in 2023.Former Northampton Saints players said members were made to drive the vehicle as a punishment for errors in training or misbehaving.Motor mechanics students at Northampton College are now trying to restore it to its former glory.
The Rialto was bought by the club and painted with the Saints colours in 2002 as a joke.Among the players who had to drive it as a penalty for wrongdoing was Ben Cohen, who was caught doing donuts in the club car park.
A local businessman bought the car and displayed it for several years, but it then disappeared.When it was rescued years later, it had been vandalised almost beyond recognition.The former Saints player and manager, Lennie Newman, pledged to get it restored and Northampton College stepped in to help.After 18 months, a lot of work has been done.The chassis has been sent to a firm in Corby to be re-galvanised, there are new weight-adjustable shock absorbers, and all the steering and braking components have been replaced.The bonnet is in the process of being repainted and a new clutch is being fitted.
Mechanics lecturer Steve Bunker said: "The students are loving it - they've put an amazing amount of effort into it."It's probably a bigger project than we ever thought - we didn't ever intend to go to this level."
Sammy Mold, one of the students, said: "It worked in our favour that it was fibreglass because it was almost like a bit of a model kit really - and we could just strip it, tip it all out."I do watch rugby, so it's nice to have some sort of part in the team."Charlie Brown, another student who wants to be a paint-sprayer, said: "It's got me an apprenticeship, to be honest."It is hoped the conversion of the car from wrecked rugby Rialto to sensational Saints spectacle will be completed later this year.

Wigan have earned their first Betfred Women's Challenge Cup trophy at Wembley after a 42-6 win against long time rivals St Helens. Izzy Rowe led her team to a win by scoring 18 points against the four-time defending champions St Helen. Their thumping 42-6 win brought Wigan their first major trophy since the 2018 Grand Final and confirmed a seismic shift in the balance of power in the women's game with once-dominant Saints second-best in every department. Rowe's magnificent contribution included the first try of the second half and a perfect record of seven conversions including a looping effort from the touchline that put the seal on a stunning personal display. Wigan, given a major overhaul under head coach Denis Betts this season, were irresistible from the off and to add to Saints' woes, it was their former player Megan Williams who opened the scoring after getting on the end of Rowe's short pass. Error-strewn Saints missed a golden chance to level when Amy Hardcastle knocked on in front of the posts, and Wigan doubled their advantage midway through the first half when Mary Coleman raced through for her side's second. St Helens dug deep to barge the dangerous Anna Davies into touch but the wave of Wigan attacks continued and they moved further clear just past the half-hour when Papua New Guinea international Emily Veivers went over on the diagonal to give them an 18-0 half-time lead. The interval brought brief respite for Saints, with Rowe soon extending her side's lead before the holders finally got on the scoresheet when Katie Mottershead burrowed over from dummy half, with Faye Gaskin converting. The brief revival was ended on the hour mark when Eva Hunter punctured the Saints rearguard and further tries from Grace Banks, who roared over from 65 metres out, and Davies completed the rout.

St Johnstone defender Sam McClelland suffers injury setback
St Johnstone defender, Sam McClelland, has suffered an injury setback and undergone a second major operation. The former Northern Ireland under-21 international was ruled out for the season when he ruptured his Achilles on day one of the last league campaign. It had looked like he was closing in on a return to full fitness, with Simo Valakari hoping the Chelsea academy graduate would stay with the Perth club for pre-season training, even though he was out of contract. However, McClelland has now gone under the knife again – this time his ankle. The picture will become clearer once he has his follow-up consultation. He was offered the option of continuing his rehabilitation with Saints. But it is understood McClelland, who had a successful loan spell with Dundee United in the Championship two seasons ago, will stay at home for this recuperation process. A free agent, the 23-year-old will then have decisions to make about the next stage of his career.

And SunSport understands that while no official approach has yet been made, Robinson is on their managerial wishlist of possible replacements. The Northern Irishman has done a stellar job since moving to Paisley in February 2022. The Buddies have finished in the top six for three consecutive seasons, with Robinson also leading the club into Europe for the first time since 1987. The Saints beat Valur in the Europa Conference League last season before narrowly losing out to Brann in the third round. There are several other candidates currently under consideration by Plymouth, including former Watford boss Tom Cleverley and ex-Arsenal and Norwich City coach Jack Wilshere. Robinson is currently under contract in Paisley until the summer of 2027, with St Mirren expected to command a significant fee should a move come to fruition. SunSport revealed last month that QPR and Huddersfield had also considered former Motherwell boss Robinson for their dugout vacancies. Ryan Hardie is one well known face to Scottish football fans playing their football down at the South coast club, which beat Liverpool in the FA Cup in the season just past.
