Two European destinations accessible from Montreal earlier in the year
MONTREAL, May 26, 2025 /CNW/ - Air Transat, voted 2024 World's Best Leisure Airline by Skytrax, is strengthening its annual transatlantic network by extending its routes to Bordeaux (BOD) and Valencia (VLC) for the winter of 2025-2026. Previously offered only during the summer, these exclusive routes will now operate from February with a weekly non-stop flight from Montréal-Trudeau (YUL) aboard an Airbus A321LR.
"By expanding our presence in France and Spain during the winter, we are taking another step toward making our transatlantic program available year-round," said Sebastian Ponce, Transat's Chief Revenue Officer. "Having recently added Valencia to our summer program, its winter extension is a testament to the destination's potential. As for Bordeaux, its winter addition strengthens our presence in the French provinces, a priority market for Air Transat."
The winter service to Bordeaux joins those to Lyon, Marseille and Nantes, confirming the strategic importance of France in Air Transat's network and meeting the expectations of both the leisure market and of travellers visiting their loved ones.
As for Spain, extending the route to Valencia – whose inaugural flight is scheduled for June 20 – confirms the popularity of this fast-growing destination. It joins Madrid and Malaga in Air Transat's winter portfolio, consolidating the company's year-round presence in Spain.
Starting February 21, weekly Saturday flights to Bordeaux and Valencia will be offered, further enriching Air Transat's summer program, which will extend through October 2026. Tickets for these destinations are now available for booking. Details of the full Winter 2025-2026 program will be announced soon.

Convenience Store Group Urge Health Minister to Reverse Flawed Nicotine Pouch Ban to Help More Smokers Quit

TORONTO, May 31, 2025 /CNW/ - On this World No Tobacco Day, the United Korean Convenience Industry Alliance (UKCIA) is calling on newly appointed Health Minister Marjorie Michel to act decisively in correcting a harmful policy introduced by her predecessor, Mark Holland: the ban on nicotine pouches in convenience stores. Canada's corner store operators have a long, proud history of responsibly retailing age-restricted products. They are uniquely positioned to support public health objectives by helping adult smokers transition to lower-risk alternatives. Yet, under Minister Holland's tenure, the federal government banned the sale of regulated nicotine pouches in convenience stores—resulting in consumers turning instead to the black market to purchase these popular products. "Minister Michel has an opportunity to reset Canada's approach to helping smokers quit," said Kenny Shim President of UKCIA. "That starts by reversing Minister Holland's ministerial order and allow responsible retailers to offer adult consumers regulated, safer nicotine alternatives." The UKCIA urges Minister Michel and Prime Minister Mark Carney to address two urgent priorities: Reverse the Ban on Nicotine Pouches in C-Stores This prohibition prevents adult smokers from accessing products that are widely recognized as part of a harm-reduction strategy. Regulated and approved nicotine pouches—already sold in pharmacies—should be equally available in convenience stores that operate under strict ID protocols and retail standards. Increase Penalties on Canada's Growing Illicit Market of Tobacco Products Illegal tobacco and nicotine products are increasingly available to consumers. These products are often sold without age checks, without health warnings, and without regulation—routinely out of the trunks of cars, online, or at unlicensed outlets. This thriving black market undermines both public health and law-abiding businesses. "Our members are on the front lines," said Shim "We see firsthand how the illegal market continues to expand while government enforcement lags behind. Meanwhile, responsible retailers are being punished for doing the right thing." Smoking rates in Canada continue to decline, thanks in part to innovation and new and less harmful alternatives. But restricting access to those very tools—while ignoring the unregulated alternatives flooding the streets—is a backwards approach. The UKCIA, which represents 2000 small businesses across the country, calls on Minister Michel to listen to their concerns and act accordingly.

A Smokeless Canada is Within Reach -- Let's Talk Facts Français

MONTREAL, May 31, 2025 /CNW/ - On World No Tobacco Day, Imperial Tobacco Canada (Imperial) is calling on government, health advocates, and all Canadians to embrace harm reduction as a key strategy to achieve a smokeless Canada in the next decade. Despite years of public health efforts, approximately 11 percent of Canadian adults continue to smoke cigarettes — a figure that has remained relatively unchanged in recent years and which underscores the need to reevaluate the existing tobacco control approach and champion harm reduction as a key strategy to decrease smoking rates in Canada more quickly. At Imperial, the goal is clear: to help adults quit smoking or switch to less harmful alternatives. Similar to Health Canada's and Canadian health groups' goal of a Smoke Free Canada, Imperial is focused on reducing smoking rates to below 5% by 2035. But to do that adult smokers need a world where harm reduction is understood and supported. "For years, nicotine has been misunderstood, largely because its use was predominantly through the act of cigarette smoking." said Frank Silva, President and CEO of Imperial. "We need people to understand that nicotine, while addictive, does not cause cancer and is not the cause of smoking related diseases. By offering adult smokers access to less harmful alternatives that deliver nicotine without combustion, we can, in fact, significantly reduce the health impact on the Canadian Society." To that end, and to demonstrate our seriousness about reducing smoking in Canada, Imperial became the first company, in 2023, to launch a Health Canada approved nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) product in the form of a nicotine pouch, called ZONNIC, to help smokers quit. A product that shortly after its introduction, was pulled from shelves by an unprecedented Ministerial Order and put behind the counter at pharmacies. "Restricting access to a Health Canada approved cessation tool contradicts the fundamental principle of harm reduction," said Silva. "ZONNIC was licensed by Health Canada following a three-year approval process and is now held to stricter standards than all other similar NRTs like gums and lozenges. The evidence shows that if you want to help smokers quit, make cessation alternatives available where cigarettes are sold. The discrimination of the Ministerial Order has now created two major public health issues. It has reduced the amount of time pharmacists have to provide front-line care for all Canadians. It has created another flourishing illegal nicotine market in Canada, where unregulated and unsafe products are available with zero regulatory oversight and underage prevention. Both seriously undermining public health progress. On this World No Tobacco Day, Imperial is committed to unmask the myths and the rhetoric by focusing on the irrefutable weight of evidence from leading health organizations around the world. "The only way we can truly help adults quit, is by embracing harm reduction and making approved products such as ZONNIC available where smokers buy their cigarettes." Silva concluded. Countries such as the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Japan, that have embraced this opportunity and implemented supportive policies are now recording the lowest smoking rates in their history. Imperial supports efforts to ensure that safer choices are available to those who need them. A smokeless Canada is possible, but only if we embrace the full range of solutions available. About Imperial Tobacco Canada Imperial Tobacco Canada is the leading tobacco and nicotine company in Canada, part of the global BAT group. Our mission at BAT is to create A Better Tomorrow™ by promoting a Smokeless World. We envision a future where smokeless products replace cigarettes, encouraging smokers to make a Switch to Better. Arctech to Supply 175 MW of Solar Trackers for Landmark Green Hydrogen Project in Oman

, May 30, 2025 /CNW/ -- Arctech, the global leader in solar tracking, racking, and BIPV solutions, has signed a strategic contract with ACME Cleantech Solutions Pvt. Ltd. a pure play fully integrated Renewable Energy Company in India with a diversified portfolio across solar, wind, hybrid and FDRE projects to supply 175 MWp of solar trackers for the 300 MTPD Green Ammonia Project in Duqm, Oman. The project is located near the southeastern coast of Oman, a region characterized by coastal desert conditions including sandy soils, high wind speeds (up to 55 m/s), C5-level corrosion exposure, extreme temperatures and high levels of solar radiation, with an annual average of around 5,764 KWh/m2. The area's favourable climate, with high solar insolation, has made it a prime location for utility-scale solar projects. Arctech will deploy its Signature 1P Single Axis Solar Tracking System Skyline II, engineered for harsh environments, to support the solar PV component powering one of the first large-scale green hydrogen production facilities in the region. The trackers will be delivered in phases starting from July 2025. In recent years, Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) has introduced renewable energy initiatives such as a new Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) project in Duqm. OPWP is actively working toward a diverse energy mix, aligning with the national target of sourcing 35–39% of electricity from renewables by 2040. This new partnership reinforces Oman's long-term vision and positions the Duqm region as a central hub in the global energy transition. This milestone collaboration underscores Arctech's growing role in enabling renewable energy megaprojects worldwide. The Oman installation is a flagship initiative in industrial decarbonization—integrating solar power with next-gen hydrogen fuel technologies, setting new benchmarks in clean energy integration. Moreover, Arctech has an extensive track record of experience in numerous GW-scale large projects across the globe, which instils confidence in this partnership. "We are pleased to partner with Arctech for our 300 MTPD Green Hydrogen project in Duqm, Oman. This collaboration marks an important milestone in our green hydrogen journey, and we are confident that Arctech's advanced tracking solutions and project execution capabilities will support us in achieving optimal energy efficiency and reliability under challenging coastal and high-wind site conditions," said by Vipin Aggarwal, VP of Procurement in Green Hydrogen and International Business.
