'Hewi': Arabic word for front garden, and Sheikh Hamdan's latest initiative, uncovers a special place
This week, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, launched an Emirati neighbourhood initiative called Hewi Dubai. Through the scheme, Sheikh Hamdan said he hoped to 'bring people together, strengthen social ties and create safe, welcoming environments for community life". Hewi is our Arabic word of the week. Most common in the UAE and other parts of the Gulf, it is used to mean the front garden of a home. The word comes from the Arabic "yahtawi", which means to contain. Hewi is then a place in the home that can contain a family's gatherings and activities. Before there were lavish homes in the UAE, the hewi of a house was the area between the outer door and the inside of the home. It would have a seating area on the ground, a modest garden space and soft lights hung above for the evenings. The hewi is a very important part of the Emirati home. It used to be the place where families sat, had afternoon tea and enjoyed fruit after lunch. Most homes did not have a majlis to host guests, so the hewi was the area in which guests were welcomed with a cup of coffee. Other countries in the Gulf have their own versions of the word. For example, in Kuwait, a hewi is called a hoosh. Some countries use the word for garden, "hadeeqa", to refer to the area. This would be especially true if there were many plants and flowers present. A hewi is also an integral part of children's lives, as it was the first place they would play in the home before venturing outside. Kids would set up makeshift goalposts and play football with their siblings or build a track for their remote-controlled cars. The hewi of a home truly came alive during the winter months, when families would congregate for a barbecue or sit under the stars to tell stories. As Ramadan begins to head into the winter months over the next few years, more iftars and suhoors can be expected in the hewi.

SEWA develops power network in 15 sites across Central Region
SHARJAH - The Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) has implemented a number of development projects and achieved significant progress in enhancing the electricity network across the Central Region. The upgrades covered both high- and low-voltage networks in more than 15 locations, including Al Dhaid, Mleiha, Al Madam, and Al Batayeh. These efforts come as part of SEWA's ongoing commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing the quality of services provided to citizens and residents alike. Khalifa Mohammed Al Tunaiji, Director of SEWA's Central Region Department, stated that electricity network development projects are ongoing in the region. Over the past few months, the Authority has carried out electrical cable extensions totalling 81.7 kilometres as part of a broader infrastructure modernisation plan. The initiative includes replacing large portions of the existing network with higher-efficiency cables capable of greater load capacity, which contributes to reducing energy loss and improving the efficiency and stability of the power grid. He noted that power has been connected to more than 45 projects across residential, agricultural, industrial, and governmental areas. This comes in response to the increasing demand for electricity, especially in regions witnessing rapid urban and economic growth. As part of its strategic plan to enhance service quality and ensure the reliability of electricity supply, SEWA has started installing new substations in multiple locations. A comprehensive plan has also been initiated to eliminate overhead power lines in the region and replace them with underground cables. Work is currently underway to implement this vital project across the Central Region. Among the key government projects recently connected to the electricity network are the Dairy Farm, Sharjah Safari, Friday Market, Wheat Farm, Jubail Market, University of Al Dhaid, Falconers Club, Wildlife Museum, Al Dhaid Mosque, Al Sahwa School, Nizwa School, and several other developments. He affirmed that the Authority remains committed to the continuous improvement of its services according to the highest technical standards, in line with Sharjah's vision to support infrastructure development, achieve sustainable growth, and provide reliable and safe electricity services to all sectors.

Sharjah confirms full containment of Al Hamriyah Port fire
SHARJAH – The Local Emergency, Crisis, and Disaster Management Team in Sharjah has confirmed full containment of the fire that broke out at 6:10 a.m. on Saturday at Al Hamriyah Port, caused by the ignition of petrochemical materials. The incident was met with a rapid, highly prepared, and coordinated field response marked by institutional integration and precise task execution. Major General Abdullah Mubarak bin Amer, Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police and Head of the Local Emergency, Crisis, and Disaster Management Team, stated that specialised teams successfully achieved full containment of the fire by 6:25 a.m. on Sunday — within 24 hours of the initial outbreak. He noted that relevant authorities have begun cooling operations at the site. Specialised technical teams from forensic and laboratory departments will determine the cause of the fire and assess the damages in coordination with concerned entities. The results will be officially announced once all technical and laboratory procedures are completed. Major General bin Amer emphasised that the teams responded to the incident with high professionalism from the very first moment, following a structured plan focused on firefighting, securing the perimetre, and isolating risk sources. They, he added, used the latest equipment and machinery, supported by specialised technical teams from both local and national entities. These included the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Interior, National Guard, National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA), civil defense departments across the UAE, Joint Aviation Command, Sharjah and Hamriyah municipalities, Sharjah Civil Aviation Department, Sharjah Airport Authority, and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC). This comprehensive effort contributed to containing the fire and preventing it from spreading to neighboring facilities. The head of the local emergency team credited the successful outcome to divine favour first, followed by the swift response, field efficiency, and effective coordination. These factors demonstrated a well-studied readiness within the emergency response system and reflected a strong institutional work ethic that prioritises the safety of lives and protection of property above all. He confirmed that this response represents a practical application of Sharjah's crisis and emergency management strategies, aligning with the national response framework and showcasing the UAE's ability to handle various challenges with competence and resilience.
