Trump calls for a ceasefire deal on war in Gaza as signs of progress emerge

US President Donald Trump on Sunday urged progress in ceasefire talks in the 20-month war in Gaza, as Israel and Hamas appeared to move closer to an agreement.
Ron Dermer, a top adviser to Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu , was set to travel to Washington this week for talks on a ceasefire, an Israeli official said, and plans were being made for Netanyahu to travel there in the coming weeks, a sign there may be movement on a deal.
Netanyahu was meeting his security cabinet on Sunday evening, the official said on condition of anonymity, to discuss plans that had not been finalised.
'MAKE THE DEAL IN GAZA. GET THE HOSTAGES BACK!!!'
Trump wrote on social media early on Sunday. Trump raised expectations on Friday for a deal, saying there could be an agreement within the next week.
Trump has repeatedly called for
Israel and Hamas to end the war. An eight-week ceasefire was reached just as he took office earlier this year, but Israel resumed the war in March after trying to get Hamas to accept new terms on next steps.
Some Palestinians greeted the possibility of a new truce with scepticism after watching the last ceasefire shatter.

Carney says trade talks with US resume after Canada rescinded tech tax

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said late Sunday that trade talks with the US have resumed after Canada rescinded its plan to tax US technology firms. Advertisement US President Donald Trump said Friday that was suspending trade talks with Canada over its plans to continue with its tax on technology firms, which he called 'a direct and blatant attack on our country'. The Canadian government says 'in anticipation' of a trade deal 'Canada would rescind' the Digital Services Tax. The tax was set to go into effect on Monday. Carney's office said Carney and Trump have agreed to resume negotiations. 'Today's announcement will support a resumption of negotiations toward the July 21, 2025, timeline set out at this month's G7 Leaders' Summit in Kananaskis,' Carney said in a statement. As attacks on Iran show, Russia can now do very little for its allies

The recent war between Iran and Israel has laid bare a truth long obscured by Kremlin bluster: Russia is no longer a superpower. Moscow's muted response to Tehran's plight is not an anomaly but the latest – and perhaps most telling – chapter in a pattern of strategic neglect that stretches from the Middle East to the Levant and South Caucasus. Advertisement Driven by President Vladimir Putin's neo-imperialist fantasies, Russia plunged into Ukraine to find itself in a quagmire that has bled its military, hollowed its treasury and crippled its credibility as a reliable partner. For years, Russia and Iran forged an unholy alliance, a marriage of convenience cemented by a shared animus towards the West and an appetite for defying the American-led order. The bond deepened with Iran's supplying of Shahed-136 drones and ballistic missiles – tools of terror that rained destruction on Ukrainian cities, enabling Putin's savage campaign to grind on. In January, both sides solemnised their pact with a 20-year strategic partnership agreement , trumpeting a united front against Western hegemony. Trade between the two countries, both heavily sanctioned by the West, grew by 16 per cent to US$4.8 billion last year. Energy agreements have bound their fates even more tightly. When Iran was exposed as a paper tiger by Israel, Moscow was expected to leap to its defence. Instead, Putin presented himself as a neutral mediator, offering to help broker a peace deal Advertisement

US Senate pushes ahead on Trump's sweeping tax cut and spending bill

Senate Republicans pushed forward US President Donald Trump's sweeping tax cut and spending bill on Sunday in a marathon weekend session even as a non-partisan forecaster said it would add an estimated US$3.3 trillion to the nation's debt over a decade. Advertisement The estimate by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) of the bill's hit to the US$36.2 trillion federal debt is about US$800 billion more than the version passed last month in the House of Representatives. Republicans, who have long voiced concern about growing US deficits and debt, have rejected the CBO's long-standing methodology to calculate the cost of legislation. Democrats, meanwhile, hope the latest, eye-widening figure could stoke enough anxiety among fiscally minded conservatives to get them to buck their party, which controls both chambers of Congress.
