100,000 electric vehicle charging points to be installed with £381m funding
The cash aims to help the uptake of electric cars among motorists who do not have their own driveways and charging points.
The new charging points come on top of 80,000 already installed publicly across the UK, and tens of thousand more installed privately.
Transport minister Lilian Greenwood said: 'This Government is powering up the EV revolution by rolling out a charge point every 29 minutes, and our support to roll out over 100,000 local charge points in England shows we're committed to making even more progress.
'We're delivering our Plan for Change by investing over £4 billion to support drivers to make the switch, while backing British car makers through international trade deals – creating jobs, boosting investment and securing our future.'
The money comes from the Government's Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure fund, which helps councils to instal new EV charging points.
Meanwhile, in a sign of growing market confidence in EVs, London-based firm Believ has secured £300 million to roll out charging points across the UK.

A recently minted 50p is now worth a hefty sum and you might just profit from it. At first glance, it may seem like an ordinary coin - it's a silver, heptagon-shaped 50p minted only two years ago. Yet, the Royal Mint has crowned it 'the rarest 50p coin in circulation', with only 200,000 available. "In 2023, the Atlantic salmon became the rarest 50p coin in circulation," specialists at the British coin maker have claimed. "Part of eight new definitive designs representing flora and fauna from across all four UK nations following His Majesty King Charles III's accession to the throne, it entered circulation at the end of November 2023." The 2023 coins, issued six months after King Charles III's coronation, display a portrait of the monarch on one side, illustrated by Martin Jennings. This is accompanied by a unique, definitive salmon image on the reverse, reportedly inspired by His Majesty's passion for the environment. Populations of Atlantic salmon are severely impacted by climate change, overfishing, water pollution, and various other human-influenced factors. Nonetheless, they can still be seen in the clean rivers of Scotland and Wales, as well as some regions of North and South West England. Right now, the Britannia Coin Company values certain '2023 Atlantic Salmon' pieces from £150. Others are listed for as much as £260 on eBay, though demand and pricing are forecasted to potentially increase. According to specialists at Copes Coins, the most valuable among these are said to exclude a 'privy mark'. This refers to a tiny crown image located at the nape of His Majesty's neck. In an online blog, they claimed: "The Salmon 50p coins in the Royal Mint sets include the special privy mark (the little crown) shown below, behind the King's head. This version of the coin is only found in the 2023 Definitive Annual Sets, and can still be bought from the Royal Mint for £34." They added: "The version you will find in your change WILL NOT have a privy mark[...] The coins without a privy mark and dated 2023 are the rarest coins in circulation, and they are the ones that have a mintage figure of only 200,000." Besides this, it's also worth acknowledging that various other factors can affect the value of a coin. For instance, a coin in poor condition will likely fetch less than another that appears almost brand new. Chris Yang, co-founder of Coins Value, previously told the Daily Record: "Coins in perfect 'mint' condition are worth far more than their well-worn, damaged, and poor-condition counterparts. Sometimes a minor difference in grade translates to hundreds, maybe thousands in value." He went on: "In sum, scrutinise your coins, have them identified and graded professionally, and work with experienced numismatists to determine the real value of your coins so that you can sell them for the best price. "Remember, the thrill of coin collecting isn't always about striking gold; it's about connecting with history and uncovering hidden treasures. Bowie challenges Tories to ‘step up' against Miliband's ‘eco-zealotry'
The Scottish Conservative MP criticised both Labour and the SNP over their opposition to new oil and gas developments in the North Sea. Accusing the UK Government of 'overseeing the wilful deindustrialisation of this nation', Mr Bowie hit out at the 'frankly dangerous eco-zealotry of Ed Miliband', the Energy Secretary. Speaking at the Scottish Conservative conference at Murrayfield in Edinburgh Mr Bowie told his party: 'We must step up. Britain needs us more than ever.' The Tory insisted: 'The future of Scotland and Britain is at stake, our country's security depends on a strong Conservative Party to stand up for what is right.' He recalled how former US president Ronald Reagan had 'once said the first duty of government is to protect' – but added that 'on every front the SNP and Labour are failing to do that'. Attacking both Labour and the SNP, Mr Bowie, who is also his party's shadow Scottish secretary, said: 'They haven't protected everyone's economic security, by raising taxes, or ripping away their winter fuel payment, even if they are now apparently going to hand it back to them. 'They haven't protected our energy security by insisting on no new oil and gas developments.' The Conservative MP continued: 'We can all see what is happening in the world, there is more risk out there, we as a country are more vulnerable. 'That is why the decisions of this Labour Government are so gravely concerning. Their economic incompetence, coupled with their frightening ineptitude when it comes to our energy security is making the United Kingdom more vulnerable.' He attacked the Labour Government over its 'madcap drive to clean power by 2030', as he said ministers were 'actively accelerating the decline of our North Sea'. This, he said, was 'forcing us to become increasingly exposed to over-reliance on imports from overseas, imports that are shipped in diesel-chugging tankers across the Atlantic from America or from Norwegian wells'. The Tory said the opposition to new oil and gas developments meant 'investment is drying up, work is being put on pause, companies are literally shutting up shop and jobs are being lost'. But he added: 'This hostility for our oil and gas workers is not simply the preserve of the zealots in the Labour Party. 'The SNP have their fingerprints all over the job losses, the well closures.' Findlay: Tories will save £650m – and use the cash to cut taxes for Scots
He will insist there is a need to 'urgently streamline bloated government' at Holyrood. The party leader will outline plans for a Taxpayer Savings Act, promising this will save £650 million by 'cutting red tape, getting a grip on spending, and harnessing business expertise'. Mr Findlay will also tell the Scottish Conservative Party conference in Edinburgh about plans to establish a Scottish Agency of Value and Efficiency. This would be run by business leaders, he will tell the conference, who would then be 'tasked with wielding a claymore on waste'. The Scottish Tory leader has already accused First Minister John Swinney and his Government of wasting money 'on an industrial scale'. In his keynote speech to the conference – his first since becoming leader north of the border last year – he will say that 'putting a stop to wasteful spending is top of our agenda'. Mr Findlay will tell party supporters: 'We need to urgently streamline bloated government. 'Improving services means treating people's money with respect.' He will say £650 million that could be saved as a result of a Taxpayer Savings Act would be used 'to bring down people's taxes', adding: 'By doing that, we would start to restore trust.' Scottish public finance minister Ivan McKee said: 'The Scottish Government is making real progress in reforming the public sector: the number of Scottish public bodies under Government control has shrunk from 199 in 2007 to 131. 'However, we know there is more to do, which is why I will soon unveil our public service reform strategy. 'Unfortunately, this work has been made more difficult by the UK Government's decision to pursue Brexit, which in 2023 alone led to an estimated cut in public revenues of about £2.3 billion. 'Most Scottish taxpayers already pay less income tax than they would elsewhere in the UK.'
