Gentlemen, before fatherhood happens, here are 5 things worth knowing about your fertility
Bengaluru: Sure, Father's Day is a time to celebrate, but for some, it can also bring up deeper questions. Like, what does it really take to become a father?
Fertility isn't usually something men think about ahead of time. It tends to show up as a concern when you're already in that place — ready, or trying, or wondering why it's taking longer than expected. The thing is, your body and lifestyle start shaping your future long before the thought even becomes real.
Not many know this, but male fertility plays a role in nearly half of all infertility cases. It just doesn't come up in everyday talk. Which is why, if you're planning to have kids someday, it's useful to know what's going on now rather than later.
Here are a few things that might help:
• Think about checking your sperm
A semen analysis is quick, not complicated, and looks at things like how many sperm are there, how they move, and whether they look the way they should. You don't need to be trying for a baby to get a test; sometimes it's just helpful to understand where you're at.
• Keep tabs on any health issues
Diabetes, thyroid concerns, and hormone shifts can all affect fertility. Some don't show symptoms right away, so it's worth getting things checked out, even just during a regular physical.
• Get an STI screening
Some infections are silent but still cause problems over time. Fertility can be one of them. A basic test is quick and rules things out, which honestly can be a relief to have off your mind.
• Take another look at your routines
Smoking, disrupted sleep, stress, constant heat exposure, these are small things that pile up. Sitting in hot tubs too often or using a laptop right on your lap every day? That, too. None of it feels urgent, but it adds up over time.
• Food plays a part more than you think
Certain nutrients, like zinc or folate, are linked to sperm health. A balanced diet with real, whole foods does more than supplements alone.
You don't need to change everything overnight. But giving your health a little attention today can set things in motion. And when that day does come, when you're being celebrated on Father's Day, you'll be glad you took those first steps when it mattered.

More urban Indian men are reaching out for mental health help, helpline data shows
Mumbai: Indian men in urban areas could be changing as far as mental health is concerned. They are calling up mental helplines in larger numbers than before and speaking longer than before, according to five-year data from a mental health helpline service. "We registered a 126% rise in male mental health helpline calls from 2020 to 2024, with relationship issues and anxiety leading the concerns," according to Mpower, an initiative by the Aditya Birla Education Trust, on Father's Day. According to national statistics, the rate of suicide for Indian men is 14.2 per 100,000 male population, while for women, it is 6.6 per 100,000 female population. "The number of suicides among Indian men is 2.5 times higher than among women. The top three causes include family dispute, ill-health, and unemployment in the casual labour class," said Dr Suryakant Yadav, Assistant Professor in the Department of Bio-statistics and Epidemiology at the International Institute of Population Sciences (IIPS) in Deonar. He said Indian men don't believe in talking it out. "In the labour class, men are focused on providing bread and their wives focus on the home and children. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ummendorf: GEERS sucht 700 Testhörer für Hörgeräte ohne Zuzahlung GEERS Undo They are not familiar with counselling, and even if they were, they couldn't possibly afford it," said Dr Yadav. Mpower's five-year analysis showed that although men only made up a fourth of the 1 lakh callers between 2020 and 2025, 40% of the male callers connected in 2024. "Of the 19,750 male callers in five years, the peak year was 2024, with 8,362 male callers. The average call duration was 7.15 minutes (as compared to 9.55 minutes for women)," said the analysis. If men talked about abuse, low self-esteem, and suicidal ideation in 2020, anxiety and depression dominated 2021. Since 2022, relationship issues emerged alongside anxiety and depression. Mpower's Rima Bhandekar said, "Beneath the image of strength and responsibility lies unspoken anxiety, self-doubt, and isolation. We're increasingly coming across young, new fathers who feel overwhelmed—unsure of their ability to care for their child and burdened by expectations." This Father's Day, give your dad a gift of health
Instead of searching for a mug, tie, or wallet this Father's Day, consider a more meaningful gift — good health — for the man who's been a pillar of strength, wisdom, and support to you. Gifting your father a comprehensive medical check-up package or even convincing him to sign up for one can be a life-saving gesture — one that shows you care not just for his happiness, but also his well-being. Health experts also see this day as the perfect occasion to encourage men above 40 to prioritise preventive screenings, many of which are frequently overlooked. 'We often see men delay health screenings due to work or family responsibilities. Father's Day can be a meaningful reminder that self-care isn't selfish — it's essential,' says Dr Vishwas Bhardwaj, an internal medicine specialist. 'Be it blood pressure, fluctuating sugar level, risk of prostate cancer, or heart diseases, several health issues among middle-aged men can be prevented or managed by simply undergoing some routine health checks,' he adds. He lists out these essential tests for men above 40: High blood pressure and cholesterol often show no symptoms until it's too late. Regular monitoring can prevent heart disease, one of the leading causes of death among men. With rising diabetes rates, these tests are crucial. Even without a family history, lifestyle-induced diabetes has become common. It's an ultrasound of the heart that shows its structure and pumping function. This test helps in identifying valve issues or weak heart muscles. Recommended for men above 45, especially with a family history of prostate issues. Early detection of prostate enlargement or cancer can significantly improve outcomes. Routine liver and kidney function tests (LFTs and KFTs) can catch problems caused by alcohol use, medications, or underlying metabolic disorders before they turn serious. Colorectal cancer screening is advised after 45. For those with family history or digestive symptoms, early testing is recommended. Often overlooked in men, thyroid dysfunction can lead to fatigue, weight gain, and mood changes. Vitamin D & B12 levels These deficiencies are increasingly common and can cause chronic fatigue, bone pain, and neurological issues. As sensory decline begins subtly, periodic checks help detect issues early and maintain quality of life. Rupali Mehta, a 23-year-old student from Mohali, says, 'I convinced my dad to undergo a full-body check-up ahead of Father's Day. As we await test results, I urge all dads to pay heed to their kids when they tell them to take care.'
