Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre and TotalEnergies officially commission a landmark solar PV rooftop project
Muscat: The Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) based in Muscat, in collaboration with TotalEnergies Renewables Distributed Generation Middle East & Africa and with the support of OMRAN Group, has officially commissioned its solar rooftop project, now fully operational and powering the venue with clean solar energy since early 2025.
The project agreement was signed in March 2024, with construction commencing immediately thereafter. Completed in record time, the installation comprises 8,300 state-of-the-art solar photovoltaic (PV) modules spanning 16,600 square metres across the OCEC's Atrium and Exhibition Halls rooftops. For perspective, this area is equivalent to 63 tennis courts, or two full-sized football pitches now covered with high-efficiency solar panels.
Designed to significantly reduce the venue's carbon footprint, the system is expected to avoid approximately 3,300 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually amounting to over 72,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions avoided over the project's lifetime. In addition to generating around 25% of OCEC's total energy needs, the PV modules offer added benefits such as lowering indoor temperatures by providing shade and protecting the roof from direct UV and rain exposure, contributing to further energy savings.
This initiative represents a major step in OCEC's wider sustainability journey, in line with Oman's national Net Zero 2050 ambitions. It complements a range of ongoing efforts, including the venue's LEED Gold certification, the development of a biodiverse garden, regular food donations, a robust waste recycling program, and close collaboration with local suppliers and SMEs to implement further sustainable solutions.

The system has already begun reducing emissions and supplying green power to events hosted at the Centre. Many events taking place at the OCEC will be benefiting from this new initiative, including the upcoming beneficiaries is Oman Sustainability Week, set to take place from 12–15 May 2025, which will be partly powered by this renewable energy source.

Rethinking AI for the real world of sustainable energy transition
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has come a long way. Today, it can write, translate and analyse large volumes of information. But to help solve the urgent challenges of climate change and clean energy, AI must move beyond language. It must support real-world planning, decisions and action. Oman is taking bold steps towards sustainability. With its commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050, the country has launched the Oman Net Zero Centre under the Ministry of Energy and Minerals. This centre will guide the national strategy, ensuring a transition that protects the environment, reduces costs, creates jobs and secures the energy supply. To make this transition successful, we need smart tools that can manage complex energy systems; and guide policy and investment choices. This is where AI can make a real difference, not just as a digital assistant but as a partner in designing and operating better sustainable systems. For example, green hydrogen is a key pillar of Oman's strategy. Major projects are being planned to turn Oman into a global hub for hydrogen production and export. AI can help these projects by modelling supply chains, optimising storage and transport; and forecasting international market dynamics to facilitate sustainable business growth. Similarly, AI can enhance the power sector by improving forecasting for solar and wind production, managing energy storage and increasing grid reliability. In transport, AI can support the rollout of electric vehicles and smart charging networks. In industry, it can identify cost-effective routes to shift from fossil fuels to electricity or hydrogen, helping avoid stranded investments. AI should be aligned with the five goals of Oman's net-zero pathway: environmental sustainability, energy affordability, economic growth, job creation and energy security. With the right approach, AI can help balance trade-offs and support better decisions. The UAE has already recognised this opportunity through the establishment of the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), which is advancing research in AI for national transformation. Oman too can benefit by investing in similar initiatives. A dedicated centre or academic hub for AI in energy, climate and sustainability would complement the goals of the Oman Net Zero Centre and strengthen our national capabilities. As Oman builds its green hydrogen infrastructure and decarbonises its energy systems, AI must become part of the solution. It should be trained not just on data, but on the realities of engineering, economics and the climate. Now is the time to think beyond conventional uses of AI. If applied with purpose, AI can help Oman meet its Oman Vision 2040 and Net Zero 2050 goals and become a regional leader in smart and sustainable development. Abraj concludes high-impact participation at OPES & OSW 2025

Jindal Renewables and OQAE sign JDA to advance integrated renewable power projects
Muscat – In a landmark move to accelerate Oman's transition to clean energy, Jindal Renewables, part of the $25 billion India-based Jindal Group, and OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE), the Sultanate's designated national champion for renewable energy, have signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to collaborate on the development, ownership, and operation of large-scale renewable energy assets in the country. The agreement was formally signed by Harssha Shetty, CEO of Jindal Oman, and Najla Zuhair al Jamali, CEO of OQ Alternative Energy, at a ceremony held in Muscat during Oman Sustainability Week. This strategic partnership marks a significant milestone in supporting the goals of Oman Vision 2040, the national roadmap for economic diversification, sustainability, and green industrialisation. Both companies expressed their deep gratitude to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik for his visionary leadership in guiding Oman's transition toward a knowledge-based, low-carbon economy. The partnership reaffirms their commitment to contributing meaningfully to His Majesty's vision of a more sustainable and prosperous Oman. Under the JDA, both companies will co-develop Integrated Energy Valleys (IEVs) — a flagship configuration pioneered by Jindal Renewables — to deliver 24×7 firm, dispatchable renewable power by combining solar, wind, and advanced energy storage technologies. As part of its future roadmap, Jindal Renewables plans to develop the first Integrated Energy Valley (IEV) in Oman to deliver renewable power to a 5 MTPA green steel plant proposed by Jindal Steel Duqm, a sister concern of Jindal Renewables. Additionally, a separate IEV is planned to supply 300 MW of continuous clean power to the operational 2.4 MTPA Jindal steel plant in Sohar, enabling the decarbonisation of Jindal's existing industrial footprint in the Sultanate. Harssha Shetty, CEO of Jindal Oman, said, 'This agreement is a powerful endorsement of our shared commitment to decarbonising heavy industries and creating scalable, resilient clean energy ecosystems. Together with OQAE, we aim to make Oman a leading player in the global green energy value chain.'
