Athletes return to OR Tambo after medal wins in China
OR Tambo International Airport was filled with joy and celebration on May 14 as proud supporters, family, friends, and classmates welcomed home South Africa's medal-winning relay athletes.
The team returned from the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China.
The national team earned three medals, including gold in the men's 4x100m and 4x400m relays and bronze in the women's 4x400m final.
In addition to the podium finishes, all three squads secured automatic qualification for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

The mixed 4x400m team, which finished fifth in their event, also qualified.
Athletics South Africa (ASA) president James Moloi praised the team's success, describing it as the result of a broader developmental plan.
'We are very excited because this is a long-term project, especially aimed at building up these young athletes. While Tokyo is our next target, we are building for Los Angeles,' he said.
Moloi explained that ASA has a four-year development programme that includes rural and urban school competitions.
'We want to build a strong pipeline across all disciplines, especially the women's teams. We've also launched a broadcasting initiative and secured sponsorship for the full four-year cycle,' he added.
He stressed the importance of continued investment in development.
'It's difficult to beat countries like the USA, Britain, and Jamaica. People assumed the SA team wouldn't win because of those strong competitors, but we proved them wrong.'

In the men's 4x100m relay, 19-year-old Bayanda Walaza teamed up with Sinesipho Dambile, Bradley Nkoana, and Akani Simbine to record a blistering time of 37.61 seconds, the fastest of the year, beating the United States by just 0.05 seconds.
Bayanda's mother, Tholiwe Walaza, was overwhelmed with pride.
'I'm very happy. They've done so well. Since primary school, Bayanda has been passionate about athletics. This is a dream come true,' she said.
Bradley Nkoana's grandmother, Anna Nkoana, travelled from Mabopane to give her grandson a hero's welcome.
'I couldn't wait for this day. I called him every day while he was away. His passion started in primary school, and he's still going strong in university,' she said.
In the men's 4x400m, the team of Gaerdeo Isaacs, Udeme Okon, Leendert Koekemoer, and Zakithi Nene claimed gold with a time of 2 minutes and 57 seconds.
Leendert Koekemoer's father, Lourens, proudly reflected on his son's journey.
'My son ran the third leg. It's amazing. Athletics in South Africa is in a healthy place right now.
'From junior to senior levels, there's great momentum. Leendert started with short-distance races, but everything changed when he switched to the 400m in Grade Eight. He's since won national titles and even broke a South African record this year.'

The women's 4x400m team, Shirley Nekhubui, Miranda Coetzee, Precious Melepo, and Zeney van der Walt, set a new national record on their way to securing the bronze medal.
SASCOC president Barry Hendricks congratulated the team, saying: 'We're proud of you. You made us stand and scream at our TVs.
'The passion you showed has planted a seed of hope for many aspiring athletes. Our investment through the Operation Excellence programme has paid off.'
Former South African sprinter Geraldine Pillay also praised the athletes.
'I'm incredibly proud of our athletes. They performed brilliantly and qualified for the World Championships, topping the medal rankings at the World Relays.
This is a phenomenal moment for both the young stars and seasoned athletes like Akani Simbine.
'We wish the team all the best for the rest of the season, especially as they prepare for the World Championships in Tokyo later this year.'

South Africa guaranteed a team in URC final after Bulls and Sharks keep the flag flying

Ruan Nortjie, captain of the Bulls, is set to lead his team again, this time against the Sharks in the semi-finals of the URC on Saturday. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix South Africa will maintain its proud record of having a team in the final of the United Rugby Championship (URC), after the Bulls and Sharks won their quarter-finals at the weekend and now face off in a semi-final in Pretoria on Saturday. Since the inception of the URC, a South African team has featured in every final. The inaugural 2021/22 season culminated in a final in Cape Town between the victorious Stormers and the Bulls. The following year, the Stormers lost a home final to Munster, and last year, the Bulls hosted the final against the Glasgow Warriors, who won it. Video Player is loading. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ This year, either the Bulls or the Sharks will progress to a final against the winner of Saturday's semi-final in Dublin between Leinster and the defending champions, Glasgow Warriors. Dublin's Croke Park, Loftus Versfeld, and Kings Park are the three possible venues for the final, with the top-seeded finalists among Leinster, the Bulls, and Sharks keen to host the decider. The Warriors are the only semi-finalists who cannot host the final, even if they upset Leinster at the Aviva Stadium, as the other three teams all finished above Glasgow on the URC points table. South Africans will be backing Franco Smith's Glasgow side, as a Leinster defeat would ensure the final is played in South Africa — either in Pretoria or Durban. Of the four semi-finalists, only the Warriors have previously won the URC, while the Bulls were runners-up in 2022 and 2024. The Sharks are making their first-ever appearance in a semi-final, while, remarkably, eight-time league winners Leinster are still chasing their first appearance in a final in the URC era. The Sharks have enjoyed a meteoric rise this season, having finished 14th in last year's competition. History suggests that both the Sharks and the Warriors are capable of upsetting their favoured hosts in Pretoria and Dublin, respectively. The first three seasons of URC play-offs have seen several away wins — including at the semi-final stage — and these evenly poised match-ups could yet see triumphs for the travelling teams. The Bulls and Sharks kept the South African flag flying on Saturday, after the Stormers delivered their worst performance of the season in losing 36–18 to the Warriors on Friday night. The Bulls delivered under pressure in an entertaining encounter against Edinburgh in Pretoria. Trailing 21–8 after the opening 20 minutes, they recovered well to win 42–33. There was drama in Durban, where the Sharks and Munster drew 24–24 after 80 minutes, sending the match into extra time and then a penalty shootout. The hosts triumphed 6–4 to advance to the semi-final.

The PSL's silly season becomes even sillier with legal wrangles on the increase

John Comitis John Comitis, Cape Town City FC chairman. Photo: Muzi Ntombela/BackpagePix Image: Photo: Muzi Ntombela/BackpagePix The post-Premiership period is often referred to as the 'silly season' in South African football — a time typically characterised by rampant speculation, transfer news, and managerial changes. However, this year, the tenor of the silly season has shifted dramatically, as the PSL finds itself ensnared in a bewildering series of legal disputes that are overshadowing the traditional excitement. Less than a week ago, the PSL finally resolved the contentious matter surrounding an abandoned match between SuperSport United and Lamontville Golden Arrows that occurred in March. The game, played a few days ago, ended in a 1–1 draw. This result confirmed that SuperSport retained their Premiership status. Meanwhile, Cape Town City, who languished in 15th place in the revised 15-team league, will now face the daunting challenge of the annual PSL promotion/relegation play-offs. As if that scenario were not enough, the intrigue thickened with ongoing legal challenges from clubs within the Motsepe Foundation Championship. Cape Town Spurs and JDR Stars have taken their battle against the apparent legality of Durban City's status as winners — due to the suspected use of an ineligible player — from PSL arbitration to the jurisdiction of Safa. There remains cautious optimism that this issue could also be resolved within the week. There is also talk that other National First Division clubs are keeping a close watch on proceedings, as some may have been impacted when playing against Durban City.
