Cobb couple charged with cruelty after emaciated dog found during warrant search
Police say they discovered a dog in horrifying conditions while executing a search warrant.
Investigators told Channel 2 Cobb County Bureau Chief Michele Newell that they found a picture of the pit bull severely underweight in a case next to an AR-15.
The dog, Agnus, was found in bad condition while they were executing a search warrant tied to a homicide case. The search warrant for the case did not result in criminal charges, but charges were filed for the condition Agnus was in.
'One of the officers took a picture, full-time sent it to Detective Whitley, our cruelty investigator, and realized this is a cruelty case,' said Cobb County Animal Services Director Steve Hammond. 'You could see at that point she was starving, she was not being fed properly.'
Police said Stephon Gaines and Edaeshia Calhoun are responsible for the severe condition they found Agnus in.

'The spine, the hips, so all the bony prominences were there the muscle loss was there from a lack of feeding as well,' Hammond said.
Calhoun is charged with aggravated cruelty to animals.
Gaines, who is facing the same charge, is at the center of two other criminal investigations. He is accused of having a stolen gun in one case.
In another case, police say he was shooting a gun on a sidewalk.
'We always talk about the links to other crimes,' Hammond said.
Cobb County Animal Services now has a wall of all the arrests they've been able to make since they hired a full-time investigator in 2015.
'It's a reminder to us of the work we are doing and how important the work is,' Hammond said.
As for Agnus, she is now happy and healthy.
'The dog was adopted by somebody from the police department,' Hammond said.
As for the search warrant police were executing when they found Agnus, Newell learned the warrant was for Calhoun. She was not charged in the case.
She is only charged with aggravated cruelty to animals.

Oakland Co. sheriff's deputies found loaded weapons at high school graduation in Pontiac
Oakland County sheriff's deputies found multiple fully loaded weapons at a high school graduation in Pontiac on June 3 and believe suspects could have carried out a mass shooting at the event, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said in a news conference Friday, June 6. Deputies "probably prevented a mass shooting," Bouchard said and are still searching for one suspect, Jamarion Hardiman, 20, of Pontiac. Deputies found multiple weapons around the United Wholesale Mortgage sports complex on South Boulevard where the Arts and Technology Academy of Pontiac graduation was being held. Sheriff's deputies were originally called out after reports of a brawl breaking out, but were told by an individual at the event that rumors of Snapchat threats about a possible shooting were circulating, according to Bouchard. As deputies started to investigate the individuals involved in the fight, they learned they had been seen placing packages under cars at the sports complex's parking lot, and found that those packages were weapons. The weapons found include what Bouchard described as an AR-style pistol and a Glock semi-automatic handgun. Both were loaded with 40-round magazines, Bouchard said. The guns were not registered. "Just those two weapons without changing magazines had 80 rounds of potential firepower shooting into a graduation," Bouchard said. "You can only imagine the outcome of that." One suspect, a 19-year-old Bouchard did not name, is in custody. Another, Hardiman, is still wanted. Neither were graduating students, but had ongoing disputes with others in the school community. Off-duty Anderson police officer charged after Indy neighborhood shootout
The off-duty Anderson police officer involved in an early morning shootout in an east-side Indianapolis neighborhood has been charged by the Marion County Prosecutor's Office. Officer Maurice Magee, 34, is charged with two counts of criminal recklessness for his alleged role in the 600 block of Woodruff Place West Drive shooting on May 19. Magee, who lives in Indianapolis, began searching the area after reporting his personal vehicle stolen. He reported his Dodge Challenger stolen to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department earlier that morning. The prosecutor's office said it's believed the car was located by Magee using an Apple AirTag. "Law enforcement officers should understand the proper and safe ways for reporting a crime," said Prosecutor Ryan Mears. "The allegations in the probable cause affidavit could have been avoided if the defendant had simply allowed local police to conduct an investigation. Instead, his alleged actions unnecessarily jeopardized the safety of the residents of Woodruff Place." Just after sunrise, residents in the area who were getting ready for work, and their kids ready for school, heard vehicles revving and a collision followed by gunfire in front of their homes. Witnesses saw Magee and a man detectives believed to be his brother-in-law carrying firearms coming down the street before the shooting happened between them and two suspects. Magee was driving a black Mercedes-AMG, and his brother-in-law was driving a gray Dodge 2500 Ram pickup. The pickup and the Challenger collided before the shooting, resulting in the car ramming into a neighbor's fence on a hill. After the crash, gunfire was exchanged between the men in the Challenger and Magee, the prosecutor said. The men in the Challenger then ran behind the house where they crashed. They haven't been identified or found, the prosecutor said. In an interview with detectives, Magee said he did not fire his weapon, an AR-15 rifle. Both Magee's and his brother-in-law's firearms were collected for forensic testing. Multiple shell casings were collected from the crime scene and surrounding properties, including a fired bullet that traveled through an 8-year-old's bedroom window and a wall before getting lodged in a bathroom wall. Ballistic comparisons between the firearms collected and the shell casings found at the scene revealed that the man with Magee did not fire his weapon during the shooting. It was determined that at least one of the fired shell casings had been fired by Magee's rifle. In a statement to IndyStar, Anderson Police said they were notified of Magee's arrest, and he remains on administrative leave. They will reevaluate his position once they receive all the charging information from Indianapolis Metropolitan Police and will release more details as they become available.
