Assault on democracy, breach of privilege: Sukanta Majumdar slams TMC over attack in Diamond Harbour

KOLKATA: Union Minister of State for Education and Development of the north eastern region, Sukanta Majumdar, on Friday wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla regarding the attack on him in the Budge Budge area of Diamond Harbour near Kolkata. In his letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker Dr Majumdar alleged that on Thursday he was attacked by 'TMC-backed criminal mobs'. He also termed the incident as 'a grave breach of parliamentary privilege - a direct and dangerous assault on Indian democracy'. Later, Majumdar took to X and accused the police for not taking any action. In a post in X, he said, 'Yesterday in Budge Budge, Diamond Harbour, I was subjected to a brutal, orchestrated attack by TMC-backed criminal mobs, while the @WBPolice stood as mute, spineless spectators. The police not only failed to act during the violence—they also failed to take any preventive action, despite clear signs of escalating tension.'

His convoy ‘attacked', Bengal BJP chief accuses Mamata of ‘orchestrating violence'

Union Minister and West Bengal state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar on Thursday said that shoes, bricks and stones were hurled at his convoy by a group of people in Budge Budge area of South 24 Parganas district while he was on his way to meet party workers. Accusing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee of 'orchestrating' the attack, Majumdar said 'an emergency-like situation is prevailing in the state'. 'Opposition leaders like me are being stopped from visiting areas rocked by group clashes. Hindus are being attacked by jihadi elements in places like Maheshtala and Murshidabad, and police remain mute spectators at the behest of the ruling party. When we visit the areas to express solidarity with Hindus, we are attacked by rowdies sheltered by the TMC. If this is not 'emergency-like situation', in what way can it be described,' the Union minister posted on X. Calling the West Bengal Police 'spineless', the BJP leader specifically pointed to an officer of Diamond Harbour, alleging that police were mere 'puppets, deployed to shield the criminals' and mastered the 'Bhaipo Model' — a veiled reference to TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee. Majumdar said he would be sending a report to the Ministry of Home Affairs. According to reports, Majumdar's received a hostile reception in Budge Budge as a group of people shouted slogans like 'go back,' 'dangabaz' (riot-monger), and 'chorer party' (party of thieves). Meanwhile, TMC spokesperson said the protest against the BJP leader was 'justified' and 'reflected public anger against BJP's policies'. People are incensed and infuriated as the BJP has blocked the release of funds for the rural job guarantee scheme (MGNREGS) in Bengal and have seen through the BJP's gameplan to create communal rifts and polarise communities,' he said. Minister Shashi Panja condemned Majumdar's remarks, saying: 'How dare Sukanta Majumdar call women jihadis just because they were demanding their rightful and pending MGNREGA dues? Modi's leaders have repeatedly insulted women.' Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express. She is a journalist with over a decade of experience in the media industry. X writes to Manjul about cartoons on Mamata Banerjee posted six years ago

Following a request sent to X by the West Bengal Police Cyber Crime Wing, the social media platform informed renowned cartoonist Manjul on Wednesday via a letter that it had received such a request. The issue concerns two cartoons of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by Mr. Manjul shared on the platform (then Twitter) six years ago, in 2019. The police have asked X to remove two posts from the Manjultoons X account on grounds that it 'violates the law(s) of India'. The social media platform has neither removed the posts, nor directed Mr. Manjul to take them down. Over the course of a career spanning almost four decades, Mr. Manjul said he had gathered enough knowledge to know what his cartoons could feature to keep them safely within the parameters of Indian laws, and not violate any rights. The two cartoons under scrutiny are among the many satirical cartoons he has published over the years in various news outlets. 'I have been drawing cartoons for the past 36 years. But the kind of backlash I have faced in the last 10-11 years is unprecedented. Even before that, I got many requests from powerful people who wanted to push their narratives through my cartoons, but I never thought someday they would come after the cartoon itself,' Mr. Manjul told The Hindu. He has previously received notices from leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and from the Mumbai Police for his satirical work. 'It is funny that I have always been criticised for not speaking against Mamata Banerjee, and then this happens. If politicians claim they are loved by the people so much, then why do they fear small cartoons? What harm can a cartoon do?' Mr. Manjul said, adding that he may have to face police action at any time for cartoons he drew six years ago. The censorship of cartoons in West Bengal can be traced to over a decade ago, when Jadavpur University's Professor of Chemistry Ambikesh Mahapatra was arrested in 2012 for forwarding a cartoon that allegedly showed Ms. Banerjee in a negative light. Prof. Mahapatra fought an 11-year-long battle and was finally acquitted in 2023. 'I was arrested under a criminal case for simply forwarding a cartoon. They used all State machinery to crackdown on me. I had to stay in jail. Why?' Prof Mahapatra said, adding that there could be no redemption for the years of abuse he had faced. One of Mr. Manjul's cartoons shows the BJP and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) as two branches of the same tree, Prof. Mahapatra said, adding the TMC could be trying to distance itself from the BJP ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election by taking issue with Mr. Manjul. 'This is an attack against expression and freedom of speech,' Prof Mahapatra said, an emotion that was echoed by Mr. Manjul as well.
