
Movember & New Zealand Rugby Launch Ahead Of The Game To Build Mental Fitness & Resilience In Young Players Via Sport
Movember, in partnership with New Zealand Rugby, has launched Ahead of the Game – a proven, evidence-based programme that harnesses the power of sport to improve mental fitness and wellbeing among rangatahi.
Supported by an initial $1 million investment from Movember, the programme will reach young people aged 12 to 18, along with the parents, coaches and volunteers who support them, aiming to build resilience, increase mental health literacy and reduce stigma around seeking help.
'Young people are facing more pressures than ever – and boys in particular often struggle in silence,' said Tom Mulvaney, psychologist and Movember Director of Young Men's Health Australasia.
'This programme gives young players the language and confidence to open up and support each other – and shows them that their community has their back. Young men have some of the worst rates of severe mental health – and this programme looks to get ahead of that, building coping skills and changing the game at a critical age.'
This initiative was launched on Friday at St Peter's College in Auckland, alongside Blues and All Blacks player Harry Plummer and representatives from both Movember and NZ Rugby.
After a successful pilot reaching over 100 teenage rugby players across six schools, the programme will now be scaled nationally through NZ Rugby's Mental Health initiative Mind Set Engage. The 2025 rollout will begin in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton, and Hawke's Bay, with plans to expand to all regions over the coming years.
'The programme has been proven to boost mental health literacy, help-seeking intentions, and the confidence to support others – which is particularly beneficial for young people,' said Dr Nathan Price, New Zealand Rugby's Head of Mental Health and Wellbeing. 'Providing young players with the tools to support their own wellbeing and feel more comfortable asking for help is a great way we can support our rugby community.'
Movember has invested nearly $1 million to bring Ahead of the Game to life in New Zealand over the next three years, building on its success in Australia, the UK and Ireland. This launch lays the foundation for long-term community impact, with a strong focus on supporting young people's mental fitness and resilience.
Movember is seeking to grow a network of partners who share a commitment to youth mental health to expand the programme's reach. Movember is already working with delivery partners including Youthline, Attitude NZ, Challenge 2000 and Wowbeing, with the programme positioned to scale sustainably and drive change at both a local and national level.

Pharmac Urged To Widen Access To Covid Vaccines
Aotearoa Covid Action (ACA) is calling on Pharmac to reconsider its proposal to award principal supply of Covid-19 vaccines exclusively to Pfizer's Comirnaty, citing concerns over limited access and equity. The group has urged its members and others to support Pharmac maintaining and widening vaccine access to all who want them before the public consultation closes today at 5:00 PM. Pharmac's current proposal would fund only the Comirnaty vaccine, with alternative brands available solely through its Exceptional Circumstances framework. ACA believes this creates an exclusionary barrier that may prevent some people from getting vaccinated or boosted at all. 'If the goal is for as many Kiwis as possible to be vaccinated and boosted, they must feel engaged and empowered. Having a few options does this. Comirnaty is an mRNA vaccine. It is contraindicated for some, and some simply prefer a different, protein-based vaccine such as Novavax. Pharmac should accommodate these needs and preferences instead of promoting a one-size-fits-all model,' says Julia Schiller, a spokesperson for ACA. In its own submission on the proposal, ACA also suggests Pharmac widen the pool of New Zealanders eligible for Covid vaccinations and boosters, noting for example that regular boosters are unavailable to the nearly 2 million Kiwis under the age of 30 and that children under five cannot ordinarily receive any vaccination at all. 'Pharmac itself has acknowledged that protection wanes significantly over time, so it's odd that they are not looking to widen eligibility for boosters. Many of our under-30s would have last had a booster years ago,' said Schiller. The organisation points out that recent New Zealand research identified an 'urgent need to revise New Zealand's eligibility criteria [and] make vaccines available and accessible to younger age groups'. 'The more we learn, the more we see that Covid infections present a potential risk to all the body's organs and systems. Data suggests Long Covid is a real consequence of at least 10% of infections. We simply must do more to protect our tamariki and rangitahi and their teachers, both for their own health and to reduce spread of infections from schools to families to the greater community. We need a diversified and accessible vaccination strategy,' said Schiller. Widening vaccine availability aligns with the third demand of ACA's ongoing petition campaign, which advocates for more accessible vaccinations and boosters, among other measures to slow the transmission of airborne diseases. 'Winter has arrived and with it, a jump in cases of influenza and Covid, in particular the new variant NB.1.8.1,' Schiller added. The World Health Organisation has designated NB.1.8.1 a variant under monitoring. As of 29 May, it accounted for 21.6% of Aotearoa's current Covid cases, according to ESR's wastewater monitoring. 'Pharmac must ensure that a choice of vaccines is not only available but also easily accessible to all, regardless of location or circumstance. Pharmac approved five different formulations of the flu vaccine this year so it seems reasonable to ask they offer a choice of at least two different Covid vaccines.' "I was always looking at this window so I'm stoked the knee has been able to get back in action this week for an important game for us," Jordan said. "At this time of year everyone has bumps and bruises - it's the nature of the game so strap it up and get out there. It's certainly not one you want to miss so no reservations from me about getting back into this weekend." Jordan has recovered from the knee injury that has sidelined him since early May when he was hurt playing against the Chiefs. He's confident he can hit the ground running and knows if he doesn't perform there are others happy to take his place. "In this environment, there's always pressure," he said. "It's a results business, so every week you've go to perform. Johnny McNicholl played well while I was out so it's on me to come back in and keep up the good form he was doing, but not to try to do too much as well." Jordan missed all of last season with injury and is thrilled to be getting a crack at the Super Rugby finals. "Through the whole year it drove me to be involved as much as I can and try and contribute. You always want to be playing finals footy in these big games," Jordan said. "I'm grateful to be in this position now and to be able to go out there and play with freedom on Friday." Will Jordan. Penney said Jordan's return was a boost. "He's such an important part of the Crusaders' mix. He's had acknowledgment worldwide about his capabilities and any team he plays in, he's such an asset. "Without putting any burdens on him, he'll be a point of difference. No doubt." This season's new playoff format has come under fire after it was revealed that the Hurricanes clash with the Brumbies on Saturday night in Canberra could be a dead rubber depending on previous results, with both sides potentially advancing to the semi-finals. Jordan said the Crusaders aren't worrying about anything other than beating the Reds. "It's pretty simple for us," Jordan said. "You just win and you're through to the next week."

Game shooting in ‘right direction'

She confirmed last week the ANZ Premiership, facing an uncertain future due to a new broadcast deal, would return next year with all six teams involved and was likely to be played during the same time frame as this season. The 2025 season has hit the ground running and Wyllie said broadcast ratings were up 40% and the community game was "thriving". "What we're seeing is Kiwis are loving it," Wyllie told the Otago Daily Times. "It's all pointing in the right direction for netball." The ANZ Premiership has been slashed from three rounds to two this season — which means teams get only 10 games before the playoffs — and there have been innovations including the two-point shot, timeouts and a coaches box. Wyllie said there had been some "heart-stopping moments" through the opening games, and while she conceded two rounds did not make a long season, she was pleased all teams hit the court strongly. Like many traditional netballers, Wyllie admitted she had reservations about introducing the two-point shot, but felt it had its place. "It's going down well. The players are enjoying it," she said. "Sometimes you could have been a minute to go, three goals down and thought the game was done — that is no longer the case. "I think those kind of things have been really interesting talking points and great to be able to see it come to life as we envisaged it when we were planning." The tactical nature of timeouts, and when coaches used their coaches box to deliver messages during the game, intrigued her the most. "What I've loved is the strategic nature of what I'm hearing from the coaches box, when they're using their timeouts and when they're talking with their players. "We've got three new coaches in the mix this year and it's brought a really different dynamic. "I'm really impressed with how they're all being quite strategic. "I think that for me as a netty is really exciting." Aside from their blip against the Central Pulse at the weekend, the Southern Steel have been tracking well this season. They recorded a massive win over the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic and were pipped by one point against the defending champions, the Northern Mystics. Even Wyllie thought the Steel had secured a win over the Mystics — "I was screaming at the TV that there was time" — but she was proud to see how they were bouncing back after a tough couple of years. "I think it's amazing resilience and to see a team that have had a tough few years, injury plagues, with a fresh new coach in there, they've been formidable." The ANZ Premiership reaches the halfway point this weekend. The Mainland Tactix hold top spot with three wins and one loss. The Pulse and the Mystics, who are awaiting results on Australian Diamond Donnell Wallam's wrist injury, round out the top three. The Steel sit fourth with one win and three losses, followed by the Magic — who picked up their first win on Monday — and the Northern Stars. In round five, the Steel are home to the Tactix, the Pulse meet the Mystics and in a repeat of this week's game, the Stars play the Magic.
