Rory McIlroy's first drive at the U.S. Open is his longest tee shot of the year
In the buildup to the U.S. Open, Rory McIlroy discusses the "great test" presented by Oakmont Country Club, his current approach to each tournament, how he maintains motivation and more.
People wondered how Rory McIlroy would fare with his new driver at the U.S. Open, given how he performed with a previous model in missing the cut last week at the RBC Canadian Open.
Wonder is exactly what his first official drive at Oakmont produced.
Beginning on the back nine in Round 1, McIlroy used driver for the first time at the par-5 12th. His tee shot — with a perfect kick and runout — traveled 392 yards, his longest measured drive of the season.
That one nearly made it to the crosswalk! 💪

Live tracker, who could miss projected cut Show Caption Hide Caption Xander Schauffele ready for Oakmont's tough test Xander Schauffele calls Oakmont a true test, where hitting fairways and greens is the only way to survive. USGA They weren't kidding about Oakmont Country Club. The venue that has hosted more U.S. Open tournaments than any other showed its teeth again to kick off the 125th edition of this golf major. J.J. Spaun was the early clubhouse leader after firing a 4-under 66, and there's a whole bunch of contenders within a few shots of the lead heading into Friday's second round. But the course became part of the story as well. The thick rough and tricky greens proved to be treacherous and humbled some of the world's best golfers. The dynamic sets up a fascinating chase to make the cut at the 2025 U.S. Open. Plenty of big names, led by Rory McIlroy, struggled at various points over the opening 18 holes and have ground to make up in order to qualify for the weekend. The 156-golfer field will be cut down to the top 60 and ties before the third round begins, which is different than the top 70 and ties used as the cut line by the PGA Championship and British Open and top 50 and ties at The Masters. USA TODAY Sports will be tracking the projected cut line with live updates throughout Friday's second round, as well as keeping tabs on the notable golfers who are in danger of missing the cut at the 2025 U.S. Open. It's the Longest Par-3 in Major Golf History—and It's Taking No Prisoners
Collin Morikawa stepped onto the 8th tee box at Oakmont during a practice round this week, and wondered if he should play the hole conservatively or dare attempt to reach the green with his drive. 'Do you go for this par-4,' Morikawa asked his caddie, 'or do you lay up?'

U.S. Open Friday live updates, leaderboard: J.J. Spaun leads as Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy struggle early
J.J. Spaun pulled out one of the best rounds that Oakmont Country Club has ever seen during a U.S. Open on Thursday. Spaun fired a bogey-free 66 to kick off the U.S. Open, which gave him a one-shot lead over the field. He's playing in his first U.S. Open, and he carded what was just the second bogey-free round at a U.S. Open at Oakmont. Thriston Lawrence sits alone in second at 3-under, and Brooks Koepka leads a group tied for third at 2-under. Advertisement Other big names, however, struggled. Rory McIlroy posted a rough 4-over 74 on Thursday, and he left the course without speaking to reporters once again. Phil Mickelson, who is very likely playing in his last U.S. Open, matched him at 4-over. Bryson DeChambeau was only a shot better. Scheffler also shot a 3-over 73, which put him seven shots back from Spaun. Scheffler, who was a massive favorite entering the week, posted six bogeys on the day.
