T-45 Navy Jet Trainer Fleet Grounded After Engine Incident
The U.S. Navy has temporarily grounded its T-45C Goshawk trainer fleet after the Rolls-Royce Turbomeca Adour F405-RR-401 engine in one of the aircraft suffered damage due to a malfunction on Tuesday. The jet was on the ground at the time.
In a reply to our inquiries on the potential of grounding of the T-45 fleet, the Navy's Chief of Naval Air Training (CNATRA) and Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) both replied with the following:
'Out of an abundance of caution, operations of all T-45C Goshawk aircraft have been paused while the Chief of Naval Air Training and Naval Air Systems Command assess the fleet's ability to safely resume training. At approximately 3 p.m. CST on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, a T-45C Goshawk assigned to Training Air Wing 2 in Kingsville, Texas, experienced an engine malfunction prior to takeoff. The aircrew sustained no injuries. Damage to the aircraft engine was reported. CNATRA is investigating the incident as NAVAIR spearheads the engineering investigation. As always, the safety of our aircrews remains top priority.'
The T-45 fleet acts as the Navy's singular fast jet trainer aircraft, taking prospective Naval Aviators from their first jet hop to landing on the carrier along their path to earning their coveted wings of gold. The aircraft has been in service for three-and-a-half decades and the Navy has been exploring replacement options and concepts, although the timeline for acquiring this new aircraft was pushed back substantially last year.
The Goshawk has had its fair share of issues in recent years, from a high-profile onboard oxygen generation issue to a number of crashes. Just last year, the T-45 fleet was grounded twice due to engine issues. Another grounding occurred in 2022 over the jet's powerplant.
Around 190 T-45s fly for the U.S. Navy today. With yet another stand-down of operations over the jet's engine, it will be interesting to see if the Navy changes course and accelerates the replacement of the Goshawk fleet.

Conrad Shinn, First Pilot to Land at the South Pole, Dies at 102
Lt. Cmdr. Conrad Shinn, a Navy pilot who became the first person to land a plane at the South Pole, on Oct. 31, 1956, helping to open the frigid expanse of Antarctica to scientific research and bolster American strategic interests during the Cold War, died on May 15 in Charlotte, N.C. He was 102. His daughter Connie Shinn said he died at a care facility. Until February, he had lived in Pensacola, Fla., since retiring in 1963. During World War II, Commander Shinn, who was known as Gus, airlifted combat casualties in the Pacific. He was then assigned to a naval air station in Washington, D.C., but ferrying admirals and friends of President Harry S. Truman did not satisfy his craving for adventure. When an executive officer asked whether he wanted to go to Antarctica, Commander Shinn said sure, knowing almost nothing about the bottom of the world. 'It was just a place to go,' he told the historian Dian Olson Belanger for an oral history project in 1999. In 1946 and 1947, Commander Shinn flew photographic mapping missions over Antarctica on an expedition called Operation Highjump. Beckley family honors patriarch's legacy by establishing college scholarship
beckley – A Beckley family is honoring the legacy of its patriarch by helping students achieve their dreams of earning a college education. David Quesenberry, in partnership with the Beckley Area Foundation, recently established the Quesenberry Family Memorial Scholarship Fund in honor of his father, Amos Edward Quesenberry, who was known as an advocate for education. 'Having grown up with humble beginnings and with little means, he never knew if he would be able to achieve his lifelong dream of being a funeral director,' David Quesenberry said in a press release. From a very young age, Amos Edward Quesenberry had dreamt of one day becoming a funeral director. However, he wasn't able to achieve that goal until after he joined the U.S. Navy, served honorably and returned home to Beckley. Like many Americans of 'The Greatest Generation,' he took advantage of one of his military benefits and went to mortuary school. 'Thanks to the GI Bill, Amos was afforded the opportunity to attend mortuary school, and go on to start Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapels,' David Quesenberry said. Humble Beginnings Born in the spring of 1921, Amos Edward Quesenberry was 2 years old when his father, a coal miner, lost his eyesight in a coal mine explosion, 'and the large family fell on hard times.' From a very young age, Amos Edward Quesenberry did his part to help out his family by working odd jobs. He also went hunting and fishing to help provide food for his family. Yet, through all of the adversity, he never gave up on his dream of becoming a funeral director. Amos Edward Quesenberry loved his father and went on to follow his lead by going to work in the coal mines. As a 20-year-old, while coming out of the mines one afternoon, he learned about the breaking news of Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor. Like many young men and women of that era, he enlisted in the military because he wanted to help his country. After basic training he was deployed to the European Theatre where he served aboard the USS Mallory while World War II escalated around the globe. In the winter of 1943, three ships, including the USS Mallory, were torpedoed and sank in the icy waters of Iceland. 'Amos was one of eight men that survived the attack on the USS Mallory, having spent days on a raft praying.' Shortly after his rescue, the U.S. Navy honorably discharged Amos Edward Quesenberry. Post War Still determined to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming a funeral director, Amos Edward Quesenberry used his GI Loan to attend what was known at the time as The United States College of Embalming in New York City. As the years passed, the college grew in stature, and its name would change to the Renouard Training School for Embalmers. While attending school, Amos worked long hours at a Jewish grocery store where he delivered groceries. 'While away at school, Amos never forgot about his community and the relationships he had forged with so many of its members,' David Quesenberry said. 'Upon returning to Beckley, he knew his life of service would continue.' That's when he founded Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Chapels. 'He found a way to give back by helping his community when it came to the loss of their loved ones. In the beginning, Amos would take forms of payment such as money, eggs, and baked goods,' David Quesenberry said. He said his father taught him early in his life how to respect people from different backgrounds and to live by the Golden Rule of treating others as you wish to be treated. 'David never forgot that and, till this day, continues that moral code. The foundation that Amos built, the community that he loved, was the driving force for the Quesenberry Family Memorial Scholarship,' states the press release. Established in the fall of 2024, the scholarship is available to Shady Spring High seniors who reside in Raleigh or Summers counties. Students must have a grade point average of 2.0 or higher and will be attending a four-year college or university in West Virginia. The need-based scholarship, which is renewable annually, does not require a written essay. Students who will be high school seniors in the fall of 2025 are encouraged to apply. Veteran Decorates Neighborhood Sinkhole While Awaiting Repairs: 'I'm Tired of Looking at This Thing'
Michigan resident Breck Crandell began seasonally decorating a sinkhole in his neighborhood while waiting for city officials to fix the issue The Navy veteran says the local sinkholes are a safety hazard, but his creativity around a temporary fix has made neighbors smile "Watching the kids go through the neighborhood with their parents and cars would stop and take pictures – it just made me happy to see that other people were enjoying it," he tells PEOPLEA Michigan veteran has found a way of turning a lingering neighborhood issue into something the whole town can enjoy. Breck Crandell lives in Ypsilanti, where he said there are a handful of sinkholes in the neighborhood, including one right outside his driveway. It first appeared around 2017, got filled in, then reappeared a few years ago. "Instead of fixing it, they just put a big metal plate over the top of it," Crandell tells PEOPLE. The Navy veteran's temporary fix has been seasonally decorating a construction cone, which was placed over the sinkhole as a warning. "I'm a hunter and I've got turkey decoys, so I took one of my turkey decoys and put it out there, and then it just kind of started from there," Crandell says. "For me, it was just — I'm tired of looking at this thing because I have to back around it to get in and out of my driveway." Depending on the time of year, Ypsilanti residents can expect to see anything from pumpkins, to toy Santas or Easter bunny figurines placed near the cone. "Watching the kids go through the neighborhood with their parents and cars would stop and take pictures — it just made me happy to see that other people were enjoying it," Crandell says. "I've done it for all the seasons, and right now, the most current thing I have up is a tribute to vets." "Actually, until very recently, almost nobody knew who it was that was doing it, because I never said anything to anybody," he adds. There have even been festive gatherings centered around the hazard-turned-neighborhood attraction. "Last fall, one of my neighbors was retiring, and he and a bunch of his friends from the neighborhood made a nightly meeting out there with their wine and coffee," Crandell says. "And then the night he retired, they shot off a bunch of fireworks in my front yard." Bonnie Wessler, Ypsilanti Director of Public Works, told local ABC affiliate WXYZ that they "bid everything out" last year. "We tried to get a contractor in to come and fix it all for us. The total bill for all that would've been more than $600,000," said Wessler. This year, Wessler's department found a contractor who will do the repairs for half that price, so city officials anticipate it will be repaired in the next few months, per WXYZ.
