Pope Leo laments diabolical intensity of Middle East conflicts
VATICAN CITY, June 26 (Reuters) -
Pope Leo said on Thursday that conflicts in the Middle East were raging with an unprecedented "diabolical intensity" and appealed for greater respect for international law, in comments to Catholic bishops and aid agencies operating in the region.
At a meeting in the Vatican, the pontiff said countries in the region were being "devastated by wars, plundered by special interests, and covered by a cloud of hatred that renders the air unbreathable and toxic."
"Today, violent conflict seems to be raging... with a diabolical intensity previously unknown," he said, adding that the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza was "tragic and inhumane".
Leo, elected on May 8 to replace the late Pope Francis, appealed last month for Israel to allow more humanitarian aid to enter Gaza. He did not name Israel in his remarks on Thursday.
The U.S.-born pope also did not directly address the recent 12-day war between Israel and Iran that also saw the United States bomb suspected Iranian nuclear facilities but he called for countries to show better respect for international law.
"It is truly distressing to see the principle of 'might makes right' prevailing in so many situations today, all for the sake of legitimising the pursuit of self-interest," he said.
"It is troubling to see that the force of international law and humanitarian law seems no longer to be binding, replaced by the alleged right to coerce others," Leo added. (Reporting by Joshua McElwee Editing by Gareth Jones)

The comments come in as the effectiveness of US strikes came under question with reports claiming that Iran moved uranium stock pile from the nuclear sites ahead of the attack. The US has, however, dismissed such claims with Trump saying, "The cars and small trucks at the site were those of concrete workers trying to cover up the top of the shafts. Nothing was taken out of facility. Would take too long, too dangerous, and very heavy and hard to move!"

Remember, Mamdani has represented Astoria, NYC's western province of Queens borough, since 2021. His mayoral platform includes making city buses free, freezing rent increases on rent-stabilised apartments, and opening city-run grocery stores by imposing a 10-billion-dollar tax hike on businesses and the wealthy. But here's why Mamdani is now a thorn in Trump's side: So much so that Zohran has publicly stated that as mayor, he would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a newfound ally of Trump, if Bibi visited New York, citing International Criminal Court arrest warrants issued in November 2024. Mamdani has also led chants in support of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement at pro-Palestinian protests. 'Anti-India, anti-Modi, and anti-Hindu'? But that's not all. The Indian-origin mayoral candidate is also being slammed for being anti-India, anti-Modi, and anti-Hindu. Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut re-shared an X post claiming Zohran once led a mob of protesters in Times Square, abusing Hindus and Lord Ram. Even though Ranaut praised Mamdani's mother, Mira Nair, for being one of India's best filmmakers, she said Zohran sounds more Pakistani than Indian. In fact, she even raised doubts about his Hindu identity and accused Mamdani of trying to wipe out Hinduism. Mamdani was born and raised in Uganda. At the age of 7, he moved to New York City with his family. Interestingly, Zohran's father, Mahmood Mamdani, a Ugandan, has roots in Gujarat. The 33-year-old has condemned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and compared him with Israel's PM Benjamin Netanyahu over the 2002 Gujarat riots. This is why Indian-origin American leaders in New York, like Jaspreet Singh and Jennifer Kumar, have accused Mamdani of using communal rhetoric after he condemned the Indian PM. They have slammed him for using 'divisive rhetoric" in the mayoral elections when crime and housing crises have been the key issues. What are his chances? The question remains: Is Mamdani's commanding lead a sign of his sure-shot victory? Because he now faces another tough task of defeating Mayor Eric Adams and a Republican opponent—and maybe even Andrew Cuomo again—in the general election. White House Video Embraces Trump As 'Daddy' After NATO Chief's Remark
Brussels: The White House embraced the moniker of "daddy" for Donald Trump in a video that it released after NATO chief Mark Rutte used the term in a conversation with the U.S. president. "Daddy's home," the White House posted on X, along with the video featuring the song "Hey Daddy (Daddy's Home)" by Usher and images of Trump at the NATO summit in The Hague. Rutte, the Dutch secretary general of the military alliance, used the word "daddy" in an appearance with Trump at Wednesday's summit after the U.S. president berated Israel and Iran over violations of a ceasefire, which later appeared to be holding. In response, Rutte laughed and said: "And then daddy has to sometimes use strong language to get (them to) stop." On Tuesday, Trump said Iran and Israel had been fighting "so long and so hard that they don't know what the fuck they're doing". In an interview with Reuters after the summit, Rutte said he had used the word "daddy" to describe how some allies seem to view the United States, rather than about Trump specifically. "In Europe, I hear sometimes countries saying, 'Hey, Mark, will the U.S. stay with us?' And I said that sounds a little bit like a small child asking his daddy, 'Hey, are you still staying with the family?'" Rutte said. "So in that sense, I used daddy, (it's) not that I was calling President Trump daddy." Asked if this meant other NATO members were like children who were now growing up after a pledge to spend more on defence, Rutte said they "already have grown up" but realised they had to step up and "equalise" defence spending with the United States.
