Samsung hit with $117M fine over patent infringement
Samsung found itself under a patent infringement case filed with the U.S. District Court in Texarkana, Texas. The court reached an early verdict and ordered Samsung to pay out $117.7 million in damages. The plaintiff? Maxell (formerly Hitachi Maxell), whose patents related to Galaxy smartphone and tablet unlocking tech, data management and smart home platforms were violated.
The current case was initially filed back in September 2023 when Maxell accused Samsung of violating seven of its patents by selling a variety of products, including the SmartThings station alongside smartphones, laptops and home appliances all using Maxell's patented tech.

According to a report shared by The Korea Herald, Samsung licensed Maxell's patents for the duration of ten years back in 2011. Once the initial agreement expired in 2021, Samsung continued using the patented tech without renegotiating its license with Maxell. The Japanese company then filed legal complaints across several district courts across the U.S, Germany and Japan.
Samsung can appeal the current district court decision to a higher court, and is expected to do so, which means this legal battle is far from over.

Amazon UK is offering a free Galaxy Tab A9+ with its whole flagship line – but that's just the cherry on top. There are discounts across the board and you also get £100 Samsung Credit with each phone. This offer ends on June 26 – more details on how to claim the tablet here. The Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra deal is pretty wild – the phone is £150 off, then you get an additional £150 off at checkout. This drops the price of the 256GB model to below £1,000. But the price is interesting because £1,000 is how much you would spend on an S25+ right now (despite discounts) and is £100 less than the S25 Edge price (not necessarily, read below). Speaking of, here is the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge. With pre-orders done, you actually have to pay extra for the upgrade to 512GB. However, a discount, some credit and a free tablet help soften the blow. Even more so if you are a Prime or Prime Student subscriber. The Galaxy S25+ is just not worth it at the moment – the 512GB variant has a minor discount, the 256GB has none, so they are just £21 apart. But you'd be better off getting the S25 Ultra – the 256GB variant is cheaper! The vanilla Galaxy S25 has a discount on all storage capacities, dropping it to £700 for the base 128GB. Keep that price in mind as we head over to the Pixel side of the store. The Google Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL are £300 off. With that, the smaller Pro costs the same as the vanilla S25 – despite having 4GB more RAM and proper 48MP sensors in the periscope (5x vs. 10MP 3x on the Galaxy) and ultra-wide cameras. Google tweaks the Pixel Weather app and makes it look better
Google really did a great job with the Pixel Weather app making it much more useful than the old Weather app that starred Froggy. Instead of a cute animation, the app is now loaded with data including an hourly forecast, a 10-day forecast, Wind speed, Precipitation, Visibility, the UV index, Humidity, Air Quality, and more. You can have the app show the weather for your current location or add more locations if you want to monitor the weather where your kids are living, or want to know the conditions where other family members or friends live. If you're planning a vacation or embarking on a business trip, you might want to know what to expect weather-wise when you arrive at your destination. The Pixel Weather app also features a Weather map which uses radar to show expected precipitation in your area over the next six-hours. With the map, you can pinch out to zoom in if you want to see a more local look at the radar in your area. If you'd rather see what the radar shows for several states near you, pinch in on the screen to zoom out. The severity of the precipitation expected in a particular area is represented by the different colors used by the radar that cover that area of the map. The old design of the Weather map on the Pixel Weather app in on the left with the new floating card look on the right. | Image credit-9to5Google Google has improved the design of the Weather map by changing the bottom sheet showing the time, the circular play/pause button for the radar, and the radar's timeline controls. With the change, the bottom is now a floating card which shows some of the map underneath the card at the left, right, and bottom of the floating card.
