New Pornographers drummer charged with child porn possession after allegedly recording boys in Palm Desert bathroom

Joseph Seiders, the drummer for the indie rock band the New Pornographers, has been charged with possession of child pornography after being arrested for allegedly videotaping unsuspecting boys in a Palm Desert Chick-fil-A restroom.
Seiders, 44, is charged with felony child pornography possession, misdemeanor annoying a child under 18, concealing a camera with intent to invade privacy and attempting to conceal a camera. He pleaded not guilty to the charges April 11, two days after he was taken into custody by Riverside County sheriff's deputies.
In the aftermath of the arrest, the Canadian band announced that Seiders is no longer part of the group.
Seiders was taken into custody by deputies on April 9 shortly after 5 p.m. following a second incident in which he is alleged to have entered a Chick-fil-A restroom when juveniles were inside.
Staff at the restaurant on Dinah Shore Drive in Palm Desert recognized him from an incident two days before and alerted deputies. Sheriff's officials say on April 7, an 11-year-old boy reported that 'an unknown male adult recorded him on a cellphone while he was using the restroom at the location.' According to deputies, the staff later identified that man as Seiders.
Riverside County sheriff's investigators said they served 'search warrants for Seiders' residence, vehicle and cellphone. Evidence was located implicating him in the two reported incidents, along with additional crimes, including possessing child pornography.'
Seiders was booked into the John J. Benoit Detention Center in Indio on suspicion of possession of child pornography, annoying/molesting a child, invasion of privacy and attempted invasion of privacy. Investigators said the investigation remains ongoing and 'there may be additional victims.'
Riverside County sheriff's booking records show he remains in custody on $1-million bail. In a court filing, prosecutors describe the victim as 'particularly vulnerable,' and 'the crime indicates planning sophistication and professionalism.'
'Everyone in the band is absolutely shocked, horrified and devastated by the news of the charges of Joe Seiders — we have immediately severed all ties with him,' the band statement said. 'Our hearts go out to everyone who has been impacted by his actions.'
Riverside County sheriff's investigators are asking those with information to contact investigators at (760) 836–1600 or sheriff's dispatch at (951) 776–1099.

Judge hears closing arguments in ice hockey sexual assault trial

Closing arguments have concluded in the trial of five Canadian ice hockey players accused of sexually assaulting a woman, with both sides offering competing stories on what had unfolded on the evening of the alleged assault. The accused men, all former players for Canada's world junior hockey team, have pleaded not guilty to the charges. Their fate now rests with a judge. Their lawyers argued that the woman consented to engaging in sexual acts with the players at a hotel room in London, Ontario, in 2018, while attending a hockey gala. The woman testified that she had consensual sex with one player that night, but did not agree to sexual acts with the others who had entered the hotel room. The accused are Michael McLeod, Dillon Dubé, Cal Foote, Alex Formenton and Carter Hart. All were professional players with the National Hockey League (NHL) when the assault allegations emerged. The woman is known as EM due to a publication ban on her name. She was 20 years old at the time of the incident. She testified that she had met Mr McLeod at a bar in June 2018, where he and other players were celebrating after the gala. In her testimony, she told the court that she had agreed to go to Mr McLeod's hotel room and they had consensual sex. Crown lawyer Meaghan Cunningham argued that the woman was later put in a "highly stressful and unpredictable" situation after Mr McLeod invited other players by text message to the room for a "three-way". She feared for her safety, the lawyer said, and felt pressured to perform sexual acts to protect herself, including having sex with one player and oral sex with three others. Over days of testimony, EM said that she went on "auto-pilot" mode as the men demanded sex acts from her. Ms Cunningham referenced a video shot by Mr McLeod at the end of the night of the woman, where he can be heard asking her "You're OK with this, though, right?" and she responds: "I'm OK with this." She argued that the way the question is framed suggests EM had not agreed to what had just transpired. "I want to ask Your Honour to think carefully about those words and what they tell us about what was happening at that point in time," Ms Cunningham told Justice Maria Carroccia. Defence lawyers told the court a different story, focusing on her credibility and reliability as a witness. They argued it was EM who was the instigator and demanded sex acts from the men in the room. Defence lawyers also argued her actions that night made them believe she was consenting and zeroed in on one part of her testimony, where she said she had adopted a "porn star persona" as a coping mechanism during the incident. They said that the Crown had failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the woman did not consent. "This alone warrants an acquittal against all of these defendants," said lawyer Lisa Carnelos, who represented Mr Dubé. The closing arguments mark the end of the month-and-a-half long trial, which featured a declaration of a mistrial early on and the dismissal of the jury mid-way through. The verdict will be decided by Justice Carroccia alone. It is scheduled to be delivered on 24 July. G7 Sunday agenda in Canada includes trade, Ukraine and Gaza

June 13 (UPI) -- As the G7 group of large democratic nations with big economies meets Sunday in Alberta, Canada, members have a broad agenda in the midst of global economic and military turmoil. The G7 agenda includes support for Ukraine in its war defending against the Russian invasion and global trade. European members expect the United States to press again for nations to devote 5% of their budgets to defense. Other G7 issues are the Israel-Gaza war with Canada, France and Britain putting increasing pressure on Israel to end its Gaza blockade. U.S. President Donald Trump is a convicted felon and Canada bars felons from entering the country. But as a foreign state representative attending the G7, Trump will be granted immunity from the usual no-felons-admitted rule. As the host country Canada has some agenda priorities of its own for the G7 meeting. Canada has identified three core missions. The first is 'protecting our communities and the world' by addressing crime, peace and security, migration and working to improve wildfire responses. The second is 'building energy security and accelerating the digital transition' focused on critical mineral supply chains, artificial intelligence and quantum technology to boost economic growth. The third, 'partnerships of the future' will concentrate on attracting infrastructure private investment to create jobs. Canada also hopes achieve a U.S.-Canada trade deal. Prime Minister Mark Carney and Trump are expected to meet privately during the G7. Ahead of the meeting, retired Canadian politician Charlie Angus took Trump to task for deploying the military to Los Angeles ICE protests. During a news conference, Angus said, 'We're not talking about creeping fascism here. This is full on police state tyranny from the gangster President Donald Trump.'
