Celebrate Gawai with gratitude and harmony, says DPM Fadillah in call for racial unity
KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 — The spirit of unity in Malaysia's multiracial society should be upheld as a symbol of strength to further reinforce national harmony, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.
In a Facebook post in conjunction with the Gawai celebration, Fadillah said Malaysians are fortunate to be able to celebrate cultural and religious festivities in a peaceful and harmonious environment.
Fadillah, who is also the Member of Parliament for Petra Jaya, noted that Sarawak, home to the country's most ethnically diverse population, stands as a prime example of racial harmony.
'Let us always appreciate and be grateful for the peace and unity we have long enjoyed. Celebrate Gawai with joy, through traditional customs and the spirit of visiting one another,' he said.
He added that Gawai Dayak, as a symbol of unity and Dayak identity, reflects the richness of Malaysia's cultural diversity — where people of various races, religions, and backgrounds live together in peace.
Gawai is celebrated in Sarawak on June 1 and 2 as an expression of gratitude following the end of the harvest season. — Bernama

Saudi Arabia invites Malaysia to collaborate on Riyadh Expo 2030
OSAKA: Malaysia has received an offer from the Saudi Arabian government to assist in organising Riyadh Expo 2030, says Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. The Deputy Prime Minister said the offer was made by Saudi Arabia's Ambassador to Japan Dr Ghazi Faisal Binzagr during a visit to the Saudi Arabia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka. "This is a significant opportunity for Malaysia to strengthen ties with Saudi Arabia and demonstrate its standing on the world stage. "I will discuss with the Cabinet to explore the areas in which we can collaborate with them," he said after a dinner with Malaysian diaspora and students here Sunday (June 1). Also present were Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu; Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong; Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan and Malaysian Ambassador to Japan Datuk Shahril Effendi Abd Ghany. Fadillah explained that Malaysia has been invited to participate in the preparatory work, including technical and infrastructure aspects. He said Shahril Effendi will hold discussions with Binzagr soon on the matter. Fadillah is in Osaka to open the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 on Saturday. During his three-day visit, Fadillah emphasised the importance of long-term strategic partnerships between Malaysia and Japan, while highlighting new areas of cooperation aligned with regional sustainability, innovation and integration. According to him, Malaysia's participation in the expo also aligns with its role as Chair of Asean, positioning the Malaysia Pavilion as a key hub for regional engagement throughout the six-month global event. Toddler dies after MPV rams car from behind
Dashcam images from a viral video showing the MPV approaching from behind and ramming the car. PETALING JAYA : A two-year-old girl died from her injuries after the car she was in was rammed from behind by a Toyota Alphard on the North-South Expressway near Muar, Johor, on Monday. Berita Harian reported that Ayesha Sofea Anwaruddin died on Wednesday morning after spending two days in intensive care fighting for her life. The toddler was with her family of four in a Proton Saga, which was on the left lane of the highway. A viral video of the dashcam footage showed the Alphard ramming into the car from behind. Muar police chief Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz confirmed that one of the passengers in the Saga had died in the crash which happened around 7.30am on May 26. 'The multipurpose vehicle (MPV) involved is believed to have lost control before crashing into the back of the car. This caused the car to lose control and skid before crashing into the road divider,' he said in a statement. Raiz said the driver and other two passengers in the Saga also sustained injuries. A breathalyser test cleared the driver of the Alphard from being under the influence of alcohol or any banned substance. He appealed for witnesses to come forward and assist in investigations.

Drama around Tengku Zafrul's exit seems orchestrated, says Kedah Umno

PETALING JAYA : Kedah Umno is uncomfortable with what it has called 'a drama' and 'political manoeuvres' orchestrated by PKR following Tengku Zafrul Aziz's decision to quit Umno. Kedah Umno information chief Shaiful Hazizy Zainol Abidin said the statements released by PKR vice-president Amirudin Shari and PKR Youth chief Kamil Munim make the entire matter seem 'planned and celebrated'. 'The series of statements from PKR figures seem to send a direct message to Umno that etiquette does not matter in our cooperation and that political moves can be arranged without regard for the sensitivities of the main partners in the unity government,' he said in a statement today. Shaiful called for a stop to the 'drama' surrounding Tengku Zafrul for the sake of stable, honest and sincere political cooperation. 'We cannot continue to sacrifice our principles for the sake of power. Umno is ready to cooperate, not to be a plaything in the political narratives of others.' Shaiful also branded Tengku Zafrul, who is the investment, trade and industry minister, a 'first-class political tourist'. Yesterday, Amirudin said Tengku Zafrul's entry into PKR could bolster the party's credibility and expressed confidence that they could work well together. Kamil said Tengku Zafrul, being a corporate figure, could bring 'added value' to the party given the latter's experience. However, PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh said any such application to join the party would have to go through the usual processes, taking into account the views and perspectives of the party's partners in the unity government. Tengku Zafrul's decision confirms rumours that spread in February that he would be leaving Umno and joining PKR before his term as a senator expires at the year end.
