Chet Holmgren's defense earns spotlight for Thunder's Game 4 win over Pacers
INDIANAPOLIS — Matched up against Tyrese Haliburton, Chet Holmgren wouldn't budge. Go right. He went right. Go left. He shifted his feet left. After a couple of dribble moves failed to create separation, Indiana's best player settled for a rush fadeaway 3-pointer that was airballed.
Holmgren did his best 2016 Kevin Love impersonation. The Pacers hunted the switch but couldn't capitalize. They learned their lesson the hard way that you can't simply expect the seven-footer to not be agile enough to dance with perimeter scorers.
Holmgren finished with 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting, 15 rebounds and one assist. He shot 0-of-1 from 3 and 6-of-6 on free throws. He also had one block and one steal.
The Oklahoma City Thunder won a thriller in a 111-104 Game 4 win over the Indiana Pacers. In a do-or-die scenario, OKC did just enough to accomplish its road trip goal and split the 2025 NBA Finals at 2-2 apiece.
Everybody who stepped on the floor played a role in the Thunder's season-saving fourth quarter. For Holmgren, it was two big-time second-chance buckets off Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's outside misses. They helped OKC stay within striking distance.
And then obviously, the defense speaks for itself. It's what made him one of the best defensive prospects ever. He's an all-time rim protector. Being pushed up as the power forward after Isaiah Hartenstein re-entered the starting lineup didn't mess with his mojo.
"He held up great. We don't do that a ton with him because he's just so impactful at the rim. But he can really switch," Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault said about Holmgren's perimeter defense. "It's funny, when he was coming out of the draft, that was one of the things that they really recognized with him, is that he's very switchable. He's got great feet."
But several perimeter defensive stops highlighted some of Holmgren's biggest career plays. The Thunder played their best stretch of defense and the 23-year-old anchored it. That's all you can ask for from him. Even if the scoring and shooting numbers can be off.
"I wouldn't say we learned anything about each other. We've been in tough situations before. Every single time we've come together. That doesn't mean that we got to win the game that night when we did see adversity," Holmgren said. "No matter what happens, good or bad, pretty or ugly, we're always going to stick together. We're going to win together, we're going to lose together, we're going to have great moments together, we're going to fail together. No matter what happens, we're going to do it together."

Report: 2 Teams Emerging as Top Kevin Durant Trade Suitors

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Kevin Durant has become one of the most talked about names in the NBA heading into the offseason. It is widely expected that the Phoenix Suns will trade the longtime superstar forward and there are quite a few teams who would love to add him. While many different teams have been mentioned as possible landing spots, there are some who are starting to stick out among the rest as the most likely destinations. A new report has suggested two teams are emerging as top suitors. Read more: New Blockbuster Trade Idea Has 76ers Land Kevin Durant "Things are obviously fluid at this stage, but the two teams most frequently cited as potential landing spots for Durant entering Saturday's business, league sources say, were Minnesota and Miami," Fischer wrote, as shared by NBA Central on X. On the outside looking in, both the Heat and Timberwolves make perfect sense. Miami is a team that is always looking to take a swing. Pat Riley has never held back from making a big-time move if it made sense for championship contention. Minnesota, on the other hand, has made it to back-to-back Western Conference Finals appearances but have come up short in both of those series. Durant could be the piece that pushes them over the top. Even at 36 years old, Durant is still more than capable of being a go-to scorer. With either team he would instantly make them a contender to watch. Read more: Lakers' LeBron James Teases Retirement in Cryptic Ad During the 2024-25 NBA season with the Suns, Durant played in 62 games. He averaged 26.6 points per game to go along with six rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.2 blocks, while shooting 52.7 percent from the floor and knocking down 43 percent of his three-point shots. While both teams make sense, there are likely other destinations that will make noise as the situation progresses. Durant is likely to be traded fairly early in the offseason. When the NBA Finals end, the trade talks will heat up even more. Expect to continue hearing new rumors, speculation, and potential teams interested in the coming days. Durant is one of the best players in recent NBA history and most teams in the league would have interest in him if the price is right. Adam Silver makes revealing statement on Celtics ownership transition

The Celtics record-breaking $6.1 billion sale to a group led by Bill Chisholm is set to be voted on by the NBA Board of Governors later this month. Chisholm finalized the funding for his Boston ownership group last month with Robert Hale, Bruce A. Beal Jr. and Sixth Street among the known investors in the group. Chisholm's group will take a controlling stake in the franchise in the first part of a two-part sale with 51 percent of the sale occurring this summer and with the remainder closing in 2028. Advertisement The unique arrangement led to some discussion about whether that type of two-part sale would be approved by the league after a tumultuous staged ownership transfer by the Minnesota Timberwolves over the last two years. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said back in March that the league was still digesting the transaction. However, any concerns from a league perspective about the structure of the Celtics deal was put to rest this week when Silver was asked about the looming transaction and how it compares to the Wolves sale before the Game 1 of the NBA Finals. I'd just say that the Boston Celtics deal I don't think of as a staged deal,' Silver said. 'They're still in the process of completing it. It's really more about a phase-out of current ownership. I think there Bill Chisholm, who is the incoming owner, he's got to sort of straighten out some affairs in his life and his business. He's currently located on the West Coast. I think he's a huge admirer of Wyc Grousbeck and the way he's been running that team. Obviously their results speak for themselves.' Grousbeck is expected to remain team governor of the Celtics through 2028 as he keeps an ownership stake in the team before Chisholm takes full control. Advertisement 'What he's working out with Wyc is an opportunity for him, as I said, to learn the business from Wyc, then step in as the principal owner, the Governor of the team,' Silver added. 'There would then be no switching going forward. 'I think in the situation in Minnesota, yes, as I said before, I mean, it's not ideal to have those kinds of staged transactions. But also you learn it's nice to state these principles, but there we were in the middle of a pandemic, and Glen Taylor was in the process of selling his team. We all agreed to something that seemed to make sense in the moment.' The NBA Board of Governors will vote to give approval on the Celtics sale after the NBA Finals concludes.
