Pulses MAY offer solutions to broken, outdated global food system: Temasek

[SINGAPORE] Pulses, or edible plant seeds such as chickpeas and lentils, could be the transformative answer to a global food system that is under severe strain.
However, while demand for pulses is rising, the yield has stagnated in key production regions, indicating a 'failure of investment and of government policies', said Anuj Maheshwari, managing director and head of agri-food at Temasek, during a keynote at Pulses 25 in Singapore on Wednesday (May 21).
The conference at Fairmont Hotel in Singapore is organised by the Global Pulse Confederation (GPC), a Dubai-based industry body whose membership includes 20 national associations and over 500 private sector members.
During the speech, Temasek's Maheshwari called for breakthroughs across the pulse value chain, from breeding to market infrastructure, to advance production yield of the edible seeds that are not only more environmentally friendly, but climate-change resilient.
'Pulses produce 90 per cent fewer emissions per gram of protein than beef. They use half the water of soy and corn to produce the same amount of calories. They require 20 times less land than animal proteins,' said Maheshwari, adding that these plants also fix atmospheric nitrogen that is responsible for as much as 6 per cent of the global greenhouse gas emissions.
At the farming stage, pulses have a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing bacteria in their roots, allowing them to convert atmospheric nitrogen gas into a usable form for plants. This process of nitrogen fixation not only enriches the soil, making it less reliant on synthetic fertilisers, but also reduces nitrogen compounds in the air that contribute to the greenhouse effect.

If beef is Hummer, a type of heavy-duty vehicles, pulses being 'efficient, low impact and built for the future' is like the electric car for food, said Maheshwari.
Broken food system
'The (current) food system is not just broken. It is also outdated,' he added.
While accounting for a third of the global greenhouse emissions, the food system remains among the slowest sector to decarbonise. Drawing 70 per cent of global fresh water, the sector is also producing huge amounts of calories that are low in nutritional value.
'Let's face it, the global food system is built for volume, not resilience. It's built for efficiency, not sustainability. It's built for yields, not health,' noted Maheshwari.
While the global food system is now feeding more people than ever before, one in 10 persons is undernourished.
This represents about 735 million people, concentrated in Asia and Africa, highlighted Murad Katib, president and chief executive officer of AGT Food and Ingredients. He added that up to 3 billion people per year are in food-insecure environments.
There is arable land loss. The agricultural crops make up 82 per cent of the global calories produced, but occupy less than 25 per cent of total agricultural land, noted AGT's Katib.
'The scarcest resources in the world today are land and water,' Katib noted in his keynote speech, adding that transformation opportunities lie in areas such as preserving soil health and improving productive capacity.
Innovation to improve yields
Temasek's Maheshwari highlighted that pulses' yields have increased by less than 1 per cent annually in the past 20 years, in key producing regions such as India and Canada.
This is contrast to the yields of corn and soy, where biotech breeding, advanced agronomy and mechanisation have unlocked 2 to 3 per cent yield growth.
While pulses enable 'regenerative food systems', they remain 'underfunded, under-developed and under-celebrated', said Maheshwari, adding that the industry needs to tell better stories about pulses to gain the world's recognition.
He highlighted that Temasek has committed over S$10 billion in the last decade in agri-food sector innovation, an area where it sees profit generation and planetary health improvement.
Among the 45 companies of the sector that Temasek has invested in, Impossible Foods develops plant-based substitutes for meat products. Less well-known is Growthwell Foods, a Singapore-based food manufacturer that is working with an Israeli firm to bring chickpea proteins into other foods.
'We need a transformation, and pulses, humble yet powerful, is probably part of a bigger answer,' said Maheshwari.
Trump effect might be limited in pulses trade
Rabobank's executive director of RaboResearch Lief Chiang noted in his keynote that Canada, Australia and Russia dominate export flows while India, China, Pakistan and Bangladesh lead imports in pulses trade.
The US, on the other hand, only accounts for 7 per cent of global purchase export and 3 per cent of import in the pulse sector.
'So overall, we believe that the direct impact of the US trade war on global purchase trade appears to be fairly limited,' said Rabobank's Chiang, adding that indirect impacts, such as rising container freight rates as traders rush to flow shipments during the 90-day tariff pause, are visible in free markets. 'Nevertheless, the longer term impacts remain uncertain and will largely depend on the outcome of the ongoing trade negotiations,' he added.
Vijay Iyengar, GPC's president, highlighted in his opening address that, in the current context of trade fluctuations, governments should work with pulses trade members to develop predictable and transparent policies that reduce trade risks.
'I would also call on the various national associations to remain committed to the call for free and transparent trade policies in this atmosphere of tariffs and other trade barriers. We all have a role to play in driving growth in our industry,' said GPC's Iyengar.

ST PHOTOS: AZMI ATHNI, ARIFFIN JAMAR New hotels to replace Katong Plaza and Novotel hotel in Kitchener Road SINGAPORE – The Novotel Singapore on Kitchener hotel and Katong Plaza are set to be replaced by new hotels. Both properties date back to around 1981, with the Kitchener Road hotel branded with different names along the way. They were in the past two years sold, and the new owners have recently secured at least provisional planning approvals from the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA). Worldwide Hotels subsidiary Midtown Development has permission to redevelop the Kitchener Road property into a hotel with 1,625 rooms and 1,214 sq m of retail space. The hotel opened in 1981 as President Merlin Hotel – a part of the President Hotel and Shopping Complex that also included the President Shopping Centre which opened in 1970. The hotel was later rebranded as New Park Hotel in 1990 after a $30 million facelift. In 2007, it became Parkroyal on Kitchener Road, while the shopping centre was demolished in 2017 to make way for Centrium Square. In 2023, UOL sold Parkroyal on Kitchener Road for $525 million to Worldwide Hotels, a Singapore-based firm that owns chains such as Hotel 81 and Hotel Mi. The hotel reopened in November that year as the 543-room Novotel Singapore on Kitchener , a brand under French multinational hospitality company Accor . The hotel is on a freehold 7,780.1 sq m site and has a gross floor area of 37,827.71 sq m. A spokesperson for Worldwide Hotels told The Straits Times on June 3 that it is unable to share further details about the new hotel. Katong Plaza in Brooke Road, which opened around the start of 1981 , is set to make way for a hotel with 374 rooms and 537 sq m of retail space. The strata-titled mixed-use development near Marine Parade MRT station with 132 retail units and 14 residential apartments was in 2024 sold to Fragrance Group for $180 million . At the time of the sale, the building's owners had outline permission from the URA to convert it for hotel use. The existing building is on a freehold 3,162 sq m site and has a gross floor area of 9,488 sq m. The Fragrance Group did not respond to requests for comment. When ST visited the building on May 30, most of the retail tenants had vacated their units. Some were packing up and said they had to leave by end-June. A notice dated April 16, put up alongside minutes of the building's collective sale committee's meetings, stated that owners choosing to stay in the building until July 2025 will be responsible for covering all expenses such as air-conditioner and lift maintenance fees. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioner John Ng, 70, who has operated a clinic in the mall since April 2006, said he is disappointed to leave behind neighbours of almost two decades. 'We all knew each other and were very friendly. Everyone trusted each other and I could leave my clinic unattended, knowing others would help to keep watch,' said Mr Ng. ST PHOTO: AZMI ATHNI Mr Alan Cheong, Savills Singapore's executive director of research and consultancy, expects that the Katong site will house a mid-tier hotel, given the planned number of rooms. He also pointed out that the Kitchener Road hotel is likely to be an economy-tier type geared towards mass market tourism. He added that Worldwide Hotels' plan to triple the number of rooms is 'logical', as the move will help to boost its earnings. Asked if there is sufficient demand for rooms in the Farrer Park and Marine Parade areas to justify the planned supply, analysts said Singapore's hotel market has performed strongly in the past 12 to 18 months. Mr Edwin Loo, an associate director at real estate consultancy Cistri, said: 'Much of this growth is in the mid-market and upscale segments, reflecting Singapore's success in attracting event-focused visitors as well as visitors from emerging Asia who are willing to spend but remain price-sensitive given Singapore's relatively higher room rates when compared with other regional destinations.' But he noted that the site of Katong Plaza, which is next to Roxy Square, is relatively long and narrow. Mr Edwin Loo, an associate director at real estate consultancy Cistri, felt that the planned redevelopment of Katong Plaza would be boosted if neighbour Roxy Square is also roped in. PHOTO: FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION OF SINGAPORE No quit in Singapore defender Ryhan Stewart even as the going gets tougher in Lithuania SINGAPORE – Ryhan Stewart had always dreamt of playing professionally in Europe and just as he celebrated accomplishing that goal after making his bow for Lithuanian top-flight side FK Riteriai in April, the Singaporean footballer witnessed the tumultuous nature of the sport. Days after his debut for the club, with whom he signed a two-year contract, media reports emerged that Riteriai were in financial turmoil. Suddenly, Stewart's career looked to be in limbo. Singapore-based sports marketing and player development firm Red Card Global, which had entered into an agreement to acquire Riteriai on Jan 20, pulled out of the deal and said it would be initiating legal action against the sellers for 'misrepresentation, breach of agreement and the unauthorised use of funds committed in good faith'. It left the Lithuanian top-tier club on the verge of bankruptcy. 'As a footballer, I know this career has its ups and down, there are a lot of highs and a lot of lows. So you can never get carried away. This is the real side of football,' said Stewart on June 3, after returning to Singapore for a national team training camp. Stewart, who has made seven starts and two substitute appearances for Riteriai since his transfer, had the option of leaving the club but the 25-year-old fullback decided to stay on. Stewart said: 'I feel the Lithuanian league is a good place to grow as a footballer. A lot of players come through here and go on to bigger leagues in Europe. 'I don't want to just go there and then just leave after two months. That's not what my initial plan was, so I want to stay and play as many games as I can and show what I can do.' On April 4, Riteriai said on their website that they are experiencing financial difficulties and attributed the situation to 'investors' unfulfilled obligations'. A report on the Baltic Football News website on May 16 stated that the club are up for sale. The report also added that 'the clock is ticking' and that 'the club now finds itself on the edge of collapse.' The Lithuanian Football Federation had already stepped in once, and transferred €50,000 (S$73,400) to Riteriai in early April to cover overdue wages and rent but LFF president Edgaras Stankevicius has said there will not be any additional help. When asked if he faced any issues, such as late payment of wages, Stewart said 'there's obviously been some difficulties' but declined to elaborate, stating that his club, coach and teammates have been 'very helpful'. His main objective, said the versatile player who can play as a fullback or winger, is to help his side avoid relegation. Fourteen matches into the 36-game A Lyga season, Riteriai are ninth out of 10 teams with two wins, four draws and eight losses. The bottom side will be relegated, while the ninth-placed club will face the second-placed team from the second tier in a two-legged play-off for the final place in the top flight. Adding that matches in Lithuania have been physically demanding – he runs almost 2km more per match than the 10km he clocked while in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) – Stewart believes he will benefit from the experience of being involved in a relegation dogfight. 'It's a good experience, because in the SPL there's no relegation, so you don't feel that pressure where every game and every point matters. Every single game is like a final,' said Stewart, who played in the SPL for Albirex Niigata, Warriors FC and the Young Lions, in addition to stints in Thailand with Chiangmai and BG Pathum United. 'We're ready to fight for each other and to try and get as many points as possible and help the club move higher up the league.' Riteriai coach Nikola Vitorovic also believes Stewart will emerge as a better player after his time in Lithuania. He said: 'In general, he is a good boy, a hard worker and I believe he has adapted well. He is defensively very good, very fast. 'He is working on being better with the ball when he is in attacking situations, but I expect that he will be a better player after his stint in Lithuania.' For now, the situation in Lithuania will take a back seat as Stewart shifts his focus to the Lions, who face Maldives in an international friendly at the Bishan Stadium on June 5, before the Asian Cup third-round qualifier against Bangladesh on June 10 at the National Stadium in Dhaka. All four teams in Group C have a point apiece after Singapore opened their campaign with a 0-0 home draw with Hong Kong at the National Stadium while Bangladesh held India to the same scoreline at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong on March 25. Only the winners of the six groups will qualify for the 2027 Asian Cup. Stewart, who has 25 caps, said: 'All of us are raring to go. We really want to show what we can do in the friendly and we're all fighting for our place for the qualifier too. Our plan is to win both games.' Sats ‘confident' in navigating tariff situation, says chief executive Kerry Mok

– Sats, the Singapore-listed air cargo handling services provider, is confident in facing any disruptions of the global trade war being waged by the US, Mr Kerry Mok, the company's president and chief executive, said on June 3. Speaking to The Straits Times on the sidelines of the Air Cargo Europe trade show, Mr Mok said he views the tariff situation as 'another macroeconomic challenge that we have to handle' that is similar to navigating the pandemic. Air Cargo Europe is being held in Munich until June 5. Sats is the world's largest air cargo handler, following its acquisition of Paris-based global air cargo logistics provider Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) in 2023 at a cost of €1.3 billion (S$1.8 billion). Its global footprint includes 215 cargo and ground handling stations in 27 countries, covering trade routes responsible for more than 50 per cent of global air cargo volume. Mr Mok said his confidence stems from 'the playbook that we have developed through Covid, (which) has served us well'. So far, air cargo volumes have not been affected by hefty tariff increases, possibly because of front-loading by businesses to get their goods off the ground during the 90-day reprieve, he said. On May 12, China and the US agreed to lower reciprocal tariffs to 10 per cent for 90 days while they commit to trade talks. While it is uncertain what will happen after the 90 days, Mr Mok said he expects that Sats, as a global company, will be able to weather the storm. A part of the business that is not doing well could be propped up by other parts of the business that are unaffected, he said. 'In a networked environment, if US volumes drop, Europe's volume increases, Asia volumes may increase,' he said. Because Sats has a global network, it may in fact benefit from a rise in volumes elsewhere, he added. Total demand for air cargo rose by 5.8 per cent in April 2025, compared to April 2024 levels, according to data released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) . Its director-general also said the outlook for air cargo is encouraging, though 'stresses in world trade are no secret'. One of the lessons to come out of the Covid-19 pandemic is that air cargo was 'a shining spot' for many airlines and companies, said Mr Mok. When Sats was looking to expand, 'we identified cargo as a segment for expansion, because cargo is global ... and our customers operate in a global environment'. Sats offers airport services like airfreight handling, passenger services, and ground handling. It is also a major airline caterer and provider of food solutions to other institutions. 'We can't just stay big in Singapore and then be happy with that,' he said. Mr Mok said the WFS acquisition made sense because 'we are the leader in Asia Pacific, and they are market leaders in the US, the Americas and in EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) , and we have very little overlap'. Nonetheless , Mr Mok said, the acquisition was not without its naysayers. 'People said there's no chance… that Singapore companies always fail when they go overseas,' he said. But Sats took a long-term view, rather than focus on short-term profits and liabilities. 'That's not how we run the business,' he said. 'I think people are now starting to understand that it's working financially. We're now back on track,' he said. In May, Sats reported a net profit of $38.7 million for the three months ended March 31, 2025, gaining 18.3 per cent from $32.7 million in the corresponding year-ago period. Revenue for the fourth quarter was $1.5 billion, up 10.4 per cent year-on-year from $1.3 billion. This was driven by continued business volume growth and rate improvements, said Sats in a media release in May. On a full-year basis, the group reported profit of $243.8 million, soaring more than four times from $56.4 million a year ago. Revenue came in at $5.8 billion, gaining 13 per cent from $5.1 billion a year ago. Terminal 5 Turning to Terminal 5, Mr Mok said Sats will 'play a big part in the design of T5', particularly in the area of technology. In May, Sats announced that it would be investing over $250 million to upgrade its ground operations and cargo handling infrastructure at Changi Airport ahead of the opening of T5 in the mid-2030s. An expansion project more than a decade in the making, T5 will position Changi Airport to ride a predicted surge in air travel within the Asia-Pacific and beyond. Designed to handle about 50 million passengers a year, T5 will effectively double the size of Changi Airport and boost its current capacity of 90 million by more than 55 per cent. The Changi East development, where T5 is located, will also house the Changi East Industrial Zone, which will almost double the airport's annual cargo handling capacity from three million tonnes to 5.4 million tonnes. Mr Mok said the investment would refresh Sats' operations and bring in new equipment, with the goal of driving up productivity. 'We've got to find new technologies, new ways that will allow us to be efficient in driving the growth of T5,' he said. The solutions will not be those that exist today, he promised, noting that Sats can tap global network and the trials it has going on around the world. For example, a WFS cargo facility in Barcelona is testing automatic guided vehicles as part of an initiative to incorporate automation and improve efficiency, safety and productivity. 'It's important that T5 succeeds, and we want to play a big role in making that work for Changi,' Mr Mok said. Vanessa Paige Chelvan is a correspondent at The Straits Times.
