After facing defeat against India, Pakistan to buy HQ-19 air defence system from..., is it better than S-400? Know its features
Islamabad: Following the faceoff with India, Pakistan is now working to strengthen its air defence capabilities. For this, Islamabad is planning to acquire China's latest HQ-19 missile defence system. As per a report by Kuala Lumpur Defense Security Asia quoting sources, the air defence system is being planned to be purchased along with 40 Chinese J-35A stealth fighter jets. The fifth-generation fighter jets are expected to reach Pakistan in the first quarter of 2026. Notably, Pakistan is planning to buy the air defence system at a time when there is dissatisfaction in the Pakistani Air Force regarding China's HQ-9 air defence. The made-in-China HQ-9 air defence system proved to be a complete failure during the faceoff with India and its missile attack in May. China's New HQ-19 Missile Defence
The Dragon's HQ-19 is a ballistic missile defence system which was launched in November 2024. It has a range of 3,000 kms, mean it can protect the air space by that range. as per the Defence Security Air, deployed for long-range ballistic missiles, can be used against supersonic and near-supersonic cruise missiles such as Brahmos and Scalp-EG as well as India's Agni series of ballistic missiles.
On the other hand, India already has the world's best missile defense system S-400, which has been acquired from Russia. How Does HQ-19 Works?
China's Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation developed a new air defense system. This system employs a direct hit approach to neutralize incoming missiles and is deployed on an eight-wheeled vehicle carrying six missiles.
It includes a command and control system and a powerful radar – Type 610A. The radar has an estimated detection range of 4000 kms. The HQ-19 began to be developed in the late 1990s. It was first tested in the year 2021. It is derived from Chinese surface-to-air missile system called HQ-9. Weaknesses of Pakistani Air Defence
In May, Indian missiles successfully struck targets within Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) during Operation Sindoor. This operation highlighted the apparent ineffectiveness of Pakistan's Chinese-made HQ-9 long-range and HQ-16 medium-range air defence systems, which failed to intercept the incoming missiles.

Census pushed to 2027 to avoid disruption in school education post-Covid19 pandemic: Home Ministry

Express News Service (Hidden byline: Mahender Singh Manral) New Delhi | June 5 A day after announcing that the Population Census will be conducted in 2027 along with a nationwide caste enumeration, the Union Home Ministry on Thursday said the exercise was postponed after the Covid-19 pandemic because conducting it earlier could have 'immensely disrupted primary education'. On Wednesday, the government had said that data collection for the Census and caste enumeration would begin early next year, and would offer a snapshot of the country's population as of March 1, 2027. The last Census, held in 2011, had March 1 that year as the reference date. The next decadal headcount was due in 2021 but was deferred due to the pandemic. 'All preparations for Census 2021 were complete. However, due to the Covid outbreak across the country, the Census work was postponed,' the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) spokesperson posted on X. 'Covid disrupted all sectors, including education. Around 30 lakh enumerators are needed for the Census and most of them are primary school teachers. Conducting the Census post-Covid could have disrupted primary education immensely.' The spokesperson said countries that conducted their censuses soon after the pandemic faced 'issues on quality and coverage of Census data'. The delay in the Census has triggered political reactions. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Wednesday accused the Centre of deferring the exercise to reduce the state's parliamentary representation. In a post on X, he said: 'The Indian Constitution mandates that delimitation must follow the first Census after 2026. The BJP has now delayed the Census to 2027, making their plan clear to reduce Tamil Nadu's Parliamentary representation. I had warned about this. It is now unfolding… We need clear answers from the Union Government.' Responding to this, the MHA spokesperson said: 'The Honourable Home Minister has made it clear on several occasions that in the delimitation exercise, concerns of southern states will be taken care of and discussed with all concerned at the appropriate time.' Reiterating the Centre's commitment, the spokesperson said the Census process would now 'commence forthwith' and conclude with March 1, 2027, as the reference date. 'Budget has never been a constraint for conducting the Census, as allocation of funds is always ensured by the government,' the post added. This is a developing story. Bengaluru stampede: Dy. CM breaks down over deaths, HDK demands his ouster from Cabinet

A day after the death of 11 persons in the stampede during RCB's victory celebrations in Bengaluru, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Thursday broke down before the media, while speaking over the episode. The Opposition mocked him for shedding tears after allowing the tragedy to strike. Union Minister and JD(S) leader H.D. Kumaraswamy demanded his ouster from the State Cabinet, accusing him of being responsible for the episode. 'The Opposition is politicking. But I am grief-stricken over the death of children,' the Deputy Chief Minister said, weeping, while interacting with media persons in Bengaluru. 'Those children had a bright future ahead of them. This incident has tarnished the reputation of Bengaluru and Karnataka. We have taken this incident seriously, and we will rectify the shortcomings. This is a lesson for us.' He said the City Police Commissioner had told them that the programme in the stadium should be confined to just 10 minutes. 'I had no plans to go to the stadium earlier. However, upon being told by the police commissioner, I rushed to the venue. Even the KSCA president and secretary could not go to the stadium, and I had to take them in my car. We spoke to the RCB management to keep the programme short.' He said this was a time for mourning and not for scoring some political brownie points. Counter attack Launching a counterattack on the Opposition, Mr. Shivakumar declared that he would talk about similar tragedies that have taken place during their regime in the forthcoming legislative session. 'I can list out all the tragedies that took place during the BJP and JD(S) regime. But I don't want to stoop to their level. I will talk about such incidents during the BJP and JD(S) regimes in the legislative session. I am not going to talk about what happened during the death of Kannada actor Rajkumar (during JD (S)-BJP regime).' Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy blamed Mr. Shivakumar for the tragedy and said the Chief Minister should sack him if he had any courage. 'The DCM's hunger for publicity even amidst the tragic deaths and his rude behaviour at the programme was the height of insensitivity.' He further described the entire programme in front of Vidhana Soudha as a 'show of daadaagiri (bullying) by Mr. Shivakumar.' Even after coming to know about deaths, he participated in the victory programme, claimed Mr. Kumaraswamy.

In Trump-Xi phone call, China urges US to 'carefully handle' Taiwan issue

Chinese President Xi Jinping told his US counterpart Donald Trump that the two should "correct the course" of bilateral relations, in a Thursday phone call reported by state media. The talks took place at Trump's request, the Xinhua news agency said without elaborating, and come as Washington and Beijing clash over areas such as trade and student visas. Xi told Trump that "to correct the course of the big ship of China-US ties, it is necessary for both sides to set the right direction, and eliminate all kinds of disruptions, even sabotage, which is especially important", according to Xinhua. "The US side should take a realistic view of the progress made and withdraw its negative initiatives against China," Xi told Trump according to a readout from state broadcaster CCTV. He said the Geneva talks showed that "dialogue and cooperation are the only right choice", and insisted China had abided by the agreements made in Switzerland. But the Chinese president warned Trump that Washington should tread carefully over the issue of self-ruled Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its territory. "Xi emphasised that the United States should handle the Taiwan issue carefully to avoid a small number of 'Taiwan independence' separatists dragging China and the United States into a dangerous situation of conflict and confrontation," CCTV said. The Chinese leader's comments come after US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that Beijing's military was "rehearsing for the real deal" and preparing for a potential invasion of Taiwan.
