Quantum Machine Could Predict The Ultimate Fate of The Universe
Our entire reality could – in theory – be built on a bed of sand, teetering on the brink of collapse. If so, a new device developed by a collaboration of physicists in Europe might give us some idea of how it all ends.
Using a process known as quantum annealing, the researchers have provided a proof-of-concept method to study the dynamics of a terrifying kind of reality-decay that would pull at the threads of physics, causing them to unravel.
Were such an event to occur somewhere in the cosmos, the quantum laws that lend structure to matter would be rewritten at the speed of light, spelling an end to all reality as we know it.
How likely is this existential exit? Somewhere on the spectrum from impossible to putting a question mark around next Tuesday's dental appointment.
"We are trying to develop systems where we can carry out simple experiments to study these sorts of things," says Zlatko Papic, a theoretical physicist at the University of Leeds in the UK and lead author of a study aiming to provide a new way to study quantum fluctuation.
"The time scales for these processes happening in the Universe are huge, but using the annealer allows us to observe them in real time, so we can actually see what's happening."
Late last century, American theoretical physicists Sidney Coleman and Frank De Luccia grimly pointed out that there is no reason to think the lowest energy state of absolute nothingness really is the lowest. In other words, we're all standing on a false floor above an abyss of pure chaos.
Wink out every star, lock away every atom, and wipe the cosmos clean, you're still left with a nothingness that seethes with particles buying and selling their way towards existence. All of physics emerges from this economy of exchange, in fact, facilitating nuclear and chemical reactions in a relatively stable stock market of energy bartering.
Coleman and De Luccia invited us to imagine that what we think of as the lowest level of the Universe's economy hides a deeper kind of broke. What might happen if somewhere, somewhen, one bubble of space was to lose its fortune at the roulette table, and then some?
The consequences could, in fact, be catastrophic. A ripple-effect could roll out at light-speed as the new value of nothingness brought the whole cosmic financial system crashing down.
"We're talking about a process by which the Universe would completely change its structure," says Papic.
"The fundamental constants could instantaneously change and the world as we know it would collapse like a house of cards. What we really need are controlled experiments to observe this process and determine its time scales."
Controlled experiments to test a hypothetical black market for the Universe's energy economy aren't exactly the easiest things to design, but Papic and his team may have found a way to at least mimic the pockets of economic collapse using quantum annealing.
The concept relies on using the fluctuating fuzziness in quantum mechanics to find an optimal solution among a range of likely states. Their system used thousands of superconducting units operating as units in a quantum computer, representing a simplified single-dimensional map of empty space churning with possibility.
In the study, the team's simulation of false vacuum decay supported models that predict the size of a collapsing bubble is in fact the result of a competition between the energy gained by the sudden drop inside it and the loss of energy from the bubble's surface.
In the event multiple bubbles form, a complex dance of interactions emerges where smaller ones can affect the expansion of larger ones.
None of this actually tells us whether a false vacuum exists, or – if it does – whether we can expect our favorite reality show to be cancelled within the next few quadrillion years.
But every experiment takes us a step forward to understanding these complex ideas, and the quantum annealing method could one day be used to test predictions on the birth of universes like our own.
"This exciting work, which merges cutting-edge quantum simulation with deep theoretical physics, shows how close we are to solving some of the Universe's biggest mysteries," says Papic.

Menopause drug might prevent breast cancer and treat hot flashes, research finds
A drug intended to treat menopause symptoms could double as breast cancer prevention. New research from Northwestern University in Illinois found that Duavee, a Pfizer-made drug, 'significantly reduced' breast tissue cell growth, which is a major indicator of cancer progression. Advertisement A phase 2 clinical trial included 141 post-menopausal women who had been diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), also known as stage 0 breast cancer, according to a press release from Northwestern. This non-invasive breast cancer affects more than 60,000 American women each year, often leading to an outcome of invasive breast cancer. The women were separated into two groups — one received Duavee and the other took a placebo for a month before undergoing breast surgery. Duavee is a conjugated estrogen/bazedoxifene (CE/BZA) drug, which combines estrogen with another medication that minimizes the potential harmful side effects of the hormone. The Trump administration's spending cuts and restrictions on foreign students are triggering a brain drain — and American scientists are panicking. Why it matters: U.S. researchers' fears are coming true. America's science pipeline is drying up, and countries like China are seizing the opportunity to surge ahead. 'This is such a race for being the science powerhouse that you never fully recover,' says Marcia McNutt, president of the National Academy of Sciences. 'You might accelerate back up to 60, but you can't make up for those years when you were at a standstill while the competition was racing ahead.' Driving the news: The National Science Foundation, which funds much of America's fundamental science research, is already doling out grants at its slowest pace in 35 years, The New York Times reports. More cuts to science could come with the "big, beautiful bill." Universities are also watching with bated breath as the administration tries to limit the number of foreign students studying in the U.S.. Harvard is pushing back, but could face a total ban on recruiting internationally. By the numbers: While American universities are rescinding offers to incoming PhD students, other countries are recruiting heavily from U.S. labs. Case in point: France's Aix-Marseille University, which made headlines for earmarking millions of dollars for U.S. scientists, closed its application window after receiving a flood of apps. Elon Musk trades threats with Trump: What it could mean for SpaceX launches in Florida
When President Donald Trump took office in January, he began offering plenty of signs that his goals for U.S. spaceflight aligned closely with those of billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk. Now those goals, which included making reaching Mars during Trump's second term a top priority, appear to be up in the air amid an increasingly volatile fallout between two of the world's most powerful men. As insults have turned to threats, Trump has suggested he'd hit Musk where it could hurt most: His wallet. Musk's SpaceX has spent years positioning itself at the center of American civil and military spaceflight – a profitable relationship that has made the company's CEO incredibly wealthy. In response, Musk has floated – and then retracted – the idea of decommissioning a SpaceX vehicle critical to NASA's spaceflight program. The vast majority of SpaceX's missions with NASA and the government launch from Cape Canaveral, either from the space agency's Kennedy Space Center or the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Serious threats, or empty words? That remains to be seen as Musk and Trump reportedly consider a détente. In the meantime, here's what to know about what's at stake if the U.S. government's relationship with SpaceX were to crumble: U.S. spaceflight: Trump looks to axe many NASA space missions that launched from Florida The feud between Trump and his former top advisory escalated in a dramatic fashion when the president threatened to cut off the taxpayer dollars that have fueled the growth of SpaceX, of which Musk is the CEO. "The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon's Governmental Subsidies and Contracts," Trump said in a post on his social media platform. "I was always surprised that Biden didn't do it!" In all, Musk and his businesses have received at least $38 billion in government contracts, loans, subsidies and tax credits, a Washington Post analysis found. How the potential fallout between two of the world's most powerful men could affect U.S. spaceflight ambitions remains to be seen. NASA Press Secretary Bethany Stevens said in a post on social media site X that 'NASA will continue to execute upon the President's vision for the future of space.' 'We will continue to work with our industry partners to ensure the President's objectives in space are met,' Stevens wrote. Elon Musk, the world's richest man, founded Space Exploration Technologies Corp., more widely known as SpaceX, in 2002. The commercial spaceflight company is headquartered at Starbase in South Texas. The site, which is where SpaceX has been conducting routine flight tests of its 400-foot megarocket known as Starship, was recently voted by residents to become its own city. SpaceX benefits from billions of dollars in contracts from NASA and the Department of Defense, which use many of the company's spacecraft to help launch government missions. SpaceX also conducts many of its own rocket launches, most using the Falcon 9 rocket. That includes a regular cadence of deliveries of Starlink internet satellites into orbit from both California and Florida, and occasional privately-funded commercial crewed missions on the Dragon. SpaceX is also planning to bring its Starship operations to Florida by the end of 2025. The most recent of SpaceX's private human spaceflights, a mission known as Fram2, took place in April. SpaceX was also famously involved in funding and operating the headline-grabbing Polaris Dawn crewed commercial mission in September 2024. SpaceX provides launch services to the Pentagon, including the launch of classified satellites and other payloads. CEO Gwynne Shotwell has said the company has about $22 billion in government contracts, according to Reuters. The vast majority of that, about $15 billion, is derived from NASA. SpaceX's famous two-stage Falcon 9 rocket ‒ one of the world's most active ‒ is routinely the rocket of choice to get many NASA missions off the ground. For instance, the rocket is due in the days ahead to help propel a four-person crew of private astronauts to the International Space Station for a venture with NASA known as Axiom Mission 4. NASA also has plans to use SpaceX's Starship in its Artemis lunar missions to ferry astronauts aboard the Orion capsule from orbit to the moon's surface. The rocket, which is in development, has yet to reach orbit in any of its nine flight tests beginning in April 2023. SpaceX's Dragon capsule is also a famous vehicle that is widely used for a variety of spaceflights. The capsule, which sits atop the Falcon 9 for launches to orbit, is capable of transporting both NASA astronauts and cargo to the space station. Under NASA's commercial crew program, the U.S. space agency has been paying SpaceX for years to conduct routine spaceflights to the International Space Station using the company's own launch vehicles. The first of SpaceX's Crew missions ferrying astronauts to the orbital outpost on the Dragon began in 2020, with the tenth and most recent contingent reaching the station in March for about a six-month stay. Standing nearly 27 feet tall and about 13 feet wide, Dragon capsules can carry up to seven astronauts into orbit, though most of SpaceX's Crew missions feature a crew of four. The Dragon spacecraft also was the vehicle NASA selected to bring home the two NASA astronauts who rode the doomed Boeing Starliner capsule to the space station in June 2024. Certifying the Starliner capsule for operation would give NASA a second vehicle in addition to Dragon for regular spaceflights to orbit. Because Boeing is still developing its Starliner capsule, Dragon is the only U.S. vehicle capable of carrying astronauts to and from the space station. It's also one of four vehicles contracted to transport cargo and other supplies to the orbital laboratory. For that reason, Musk's threat Thursday, June 5 to decommission the Dragon "immediately" would be a severe blow to NASA if he were to follow through on it. Musk, though, appears to already be backing off on the suggestion, which he made in response to Trump's own threats. In response to a user who advised Musk to "Cool off and take a step back for a couple days," Musk replied: 'Good advice. Ok, we won't decommission Dragon.' Seven astronauts are aboard the International Space Station, including three Americans. Four of the astronauts rode a SpaceX Dragon to the station for a mission known as Crew-10, while the remaining three launched on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft.
