AS I kayak on Florida's Indian River Lagoon, I'm lost for words.
With its ancient mangrove forests and prehistoric-looking pelicans dive-bombing the water, this wouldn't be out of place in Jurassic Park.

But then comes the real excitement, as 20-plus dolphins start splashing around just metres away.
And they're having plenty of fun as they jump out of the water and even swim right under me.
This body of water is 156 miles long and the most ecologically diverse estuary in North America.
I'm taking a paddle on an uncharacteristically overcast morning, but it's usually baking hot and packed with even more wildlife, including manatees and all manner of birds.
I'm staying in the city of New Smyrna Beach, on Florida's east coast, which offers something entirely different from what might spring to mind when you first think of the Sunshine State.
It's only about an hour's drive from the theme parks Florida is known for, but presents an entirely different experience.
I'd rented my kayak from the Marine Discovery Center, which offers daily guided tours.
But out of the water, there's plenty more to see in this vibrant beach city, which is popular with surfers and about as laid-back as it gets.
The main boulevard, Flagler Avenue, is peppered with independent shops, bars and restaurants and feels like it's straight out of a Hallmark movie.
I grabbed a spot on the veranda of the Flagler Tavern, where I sipped on a deliciously tall cocktail and explored the menu packed with American seafood specials.
Martin Lewis gives travel advice about checking your passport
It was then just a short stroll back to my hotel, Marriott's SpringHill Suites.
Rooms here are huge and feature walk-in wardrobes, but the real selling point is the fabulous view you get over the Atlantic Ocean and New Smyrna's amazing beach.
Next morning, I was up early to get the sand between my toes.
Om Sunshine Yoga runs community classes on weekend mornings, with all the gear provided.
They even offer paddleboard yoga, although I soon found out my balance is bad enough on dry land — let alone the water.
Gopher tortoises
Even before attempting to get into a downward dog, the beach took my breath away — its fine white sand is set against expansive blue skies which have to be seen to be believed.
In fact, because the sand is so compact, you can even drive on it — so that's how I decided to explore the coastline.
Pedego Electric Bikes offers guided tours to see the three miles of coast at speed.
I took in the sights, sounds and sunshine, while feeling the sea breeze in my hair, as I cycled north to the Smyrna Dunes Park.
Here you can see the striking Ponce de Leon lighthouse — the tallest in the state at 175ft — as well as explore the park with its boardwalks and wildlife.
Try to go at sundown for the best chance to spot gopher tortoises.

If you're looking for something more upmarket for dinner, then Riverpark Terrace is a great spot, with a tropical garden and fancy menu.
In fact, it is known as the area's most romantic restaurant.
And love was in the air as I travelled across town and checked into luxury guesthouse Victoria 1883 to continue my stay in New Smyrna Beach — it doubles as a sought-after wedding venue and overlooks the Indian River.
It is also the oldest property in the area and steeped in history but was renovated and opened as a boutique B&B in 2022, with a gorgeous lounge, garden and speakeasy-style bar.
While the urge to relax here was strong, I took a ten-minute stroll to the creative district of Canal Street, where shops sell art, bric-a-brac and homeware, and there is brilliant vinyl at Spinning Records.
At newly refurbished restaurant General Public, I filled up on hearty Southern cuisine then headed to the Sugar Works Distillery for a drink.
This independent bar and distillery has some of the best cocktails I've ever tasted.
They are created using the distillery's spirits, which are largely made from produce within a ten-mile radius.
New Smyrna Beach is a beautiful escape from the bustle of Orlando, so a great way to vary your time during a Florida getaway.
I flew Aer Lingus from Heathrow via Dublin, which gives a sneaky benefit when travelling to the States — you go through pre-clearance US passport control at Dublin airport, meaning you don't have to bother with the faff of security when you touch down on the other side after the long-haul flight.
But it turned out that wouldn't be the only memorable flight on my holiday, as New Smyrna Beach is just 60 miles from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, where rockets are launched into space once or twice every week.
So one of the most unforgettable moments came when, just past midnight, I stood on the beach and watched as a Space X rocket rose through the sky and blasted off into the solar system.
Just like that, this holiday was out of this world.

Gorgeous villa was perfect base to enjoy stunning Greek isle blessed with beautiful beaches and stunning coastline

A villa holiday offers freedom and space to enjoy everything the island has to offer GREECE IS THE WORD Gorgeous villa was perfect base to enjoy stunning Greek isle blessed with beautiful beaches and stunning coastline Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) YOU'LL want to stay forever if you're lucky enough to enjoy a week on the beautiful Greek island of Kefalonia. Well, my wife Jackie and I certainly did after enjoying one of the best holidays of our life luxuriating in an ultra-modern villa in Trapezaki. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 12 The beautiful Greek island of Kefalonia Credit: Alamy 12 Villa Select has 77 properties to choose from on the island - we picked Notos for its stunning views and sleek interior 12 Views from the pool were to die for Credit: Supplied We'd been looking for a relaxing week and couldn't have found a better haven to do that in than Villa Notos. After a quick and faultless Jet2 flight from Glasgow we collected our little Fiat Panda right next to the airport and were on our way for our first journey on this gorgeous island. The first thing you notice are the narrow bending roads — that's after you've remembered to drive on the right-hand side of them! From airport to our villa took just over 30 minutes, so no complaints there. And wow, what a location. One of Villa Select's 77 one-to-five bedroom villas on the island, ours was simply stunning. Just one year old, the two-bedroom villa Notos was immaculate and bright inside. 12 The views continued in the livingroom at Villa Notos 12 It was a joy waking to the view from Villa Notos It had everything we could possibly require for our stay, including a tremendous welcoming pack to start us off. Milk, eggs, butter, honey, cheese, ham, bread, yogurt, olives, bottles of water, juice and a bottle of wine. Yamos! Our bedroom featured a huge bed and the bright bathroom also had all the essentials, including a super powerful overhead shower. The other bedroom had the same features and in between them was the large sitting area with a huge Smart TV, dining island, and a fully-equipped kitchen with dishwasher and washing machine. It also had very welcome air-conditioning, super reliable Wi-Fi, beach bag and towels. With full-length glass doors we couldn't wait to get our first view of the outside area and what a spectacular sight it was. Sun World -See Kefalonia Fully tiled terrace with four loungers, covered sitting area, dining table and chairs, sun parasols, fab barbeque — and our very own pool! And we looked right down on the beautiful Ionian Sea and across to Zante, another of the Greek islands. An early scouting walk took me to the village's supermarket in ten minutes and also to my first Mythos beer at the Trapezaki Restaurant. And my return walk set me up for my first dip in the infinity pool — bliss. Most of the following day was a lazy one as we were happy to just relax and enjoy the magnificent villa. We also had a visit from the resort manager Kara, with her wealth of knowledge of Kefalonia, she highlighted places that were well worth visiting. Her friends included local wine-makers Mr and Mrs Panagis Tavianatios and we managed to get a couple of bottles of their lovely Valsamo. We ventured along to the Trapezaki Restaurant that evening where the local staff were friendly and helpful. 12 Trapezaki Restaurant become a firm fav for Allan and his wife Credit: Supplied The highlight for both of us was the classic Greek stew Beef Stifado, tender meat with slow-cooked shallots in a rich tomato sauce served with rice, right. It was difficult to drag ourselves away from the villa but after a night of surprisingly heavy rain, some sightseeing was in order. Around 30 minutes drive away is Skala, a popular spot with holiday-makers, thanks to its sandy beach, clear water and a good choice of bars and restaurants. Afterwards we took in Kefalonia's green and lush interior as we enjoyed breathtaking views on a drive up through Porus to Sami on the east coast of the island. 12 Stunning Sami harbour is worth a visit Credit: Getty 12 The beautiful sandy beach of Trapezaki, Kefalonia, has beautiful turquoise sea. Credit: Alamy We enjoyed lunch seated outside one of the restaurants with a super view of the sea and bobbing boats in the harbour. The return journey was just as spectacular with pine tree-clad mountains and gorgeous olive groves. Arriving back home we found the Select Villas pool man there to clean up after the earlier rainfall. what fab service. Next morning we drove down to the popular Trapezaki beach, where we drank in the views along with some lovely coffees. Back at the villa we lazed and splashed about for the rest of the day, enjoying all the comforts that come with having a home from home on your hols. 12 Allan cooked up a storm on the villa's BBQ Credit: Supplied Al fresco dining that evening meant kebabs and burgers from our own fabby BBQ, along with some of that local wine hitting the right spot at sunset. Another drive offered up coastal views going up through Lassi to Argostoli, the capital of the island, where we wandered through the pretty streets to the waterfront. We sat across from the 'I Love Kefalonia' sign capturing more views of the turquoise Ionian Sea. The sign could have been specially made for us! 12 The famous sign in Kefalonia's capital Argostoli Credit: Supplied 12 Argostoli Bay in Kefalonia Credit: Getty Back at base we became regulars at the Trapezaki Restaurant where the dishes — including a super burger stuffed with feta cheese and tomato — never disappointed. This lovely village, with its welcoming locals, became our own little slice of paradise. And we couldn't have asked for anywhere better to enjoy it all than from Villa Notos. We loved every minute we spent there. While we've stayed in plenty of hotels, including some pretty spectacular ones, the freedom and space your own villa offers cannot be beaten. It ended all too soon though and sadly we had to make our way back to the airport where we sat in the lovely outside seating area, enjoying our final views of the Ionian Sea in the sunshine with a couple of drinks — and plotted how we might miss our flight and become permanent residents on this idyllic isle.
