14 Angus school bus routes hit by closure of Dundee firm Fishers Tours
Angus Council is 'urgently looking' for alternative school bus providers after the collapse of Dundee firm Fishers Tours.
The local authority says 14 of its school bus routes will be affected after the company announced it would cease operating by Friday.
Fishers Tours currently runs buses to Monikie, Murroes and Birkhill primary schools, as well as Carnoustie, Monifieth, and Webster's high schools, and Forfar Academy.
Drivers and mechanics at the Dundee-based firm were informed of the closure plans on Monday morning.
A spokesperson for Angus Council said there would be no impact on school buses this week.
However, the local authority is looking for alternative provision to begin on Tuesday, May 27.
The full list of school bus services affected is as follows:
The Angus Council spokesperson said: 'We are aware of difficulties being experienced by one of our school transport bus providers, which relates to routes to the following schools – (primary schools) Monikie, Murroes, Birkhill; (high schools) Carnoustie, Monifieth and Webster's; and Forfar Academy.
'Firm assurances have been given to us that there will be no impact this week (Tuesday May 20 to Friday May 23) and we are now urgently looking at alternative provision from Tuesday May 27 (Monday May 26 is an in-service day).
'We will be contacting those entitled to free home-to-school transport directly via the Group call system today and will update them again on Wednesday May 28.
'This will affect all users of these school transport services, including those who access the services by either paying a fare, or via the under-22 free travel scheme.
'Unfortunately, we are unable to contact these people directly.
'Our priority is to ensure the continuous provision of home-to-school transport, and we will provide further updates as soon as they are available.
'Please monitor our dedicated school transport webpage, which will detail the latest information.'
Meanwhile, Dundee City Council said it has been made 'aware of the situation' and is 'currently looking at the details'.

What now for St Thomas Primary site as final traces of former Arbroath school disappear?
The last remnants of a former Arbroath primary school have all but gone. Demolition of St Thomas R.C. school in Seaton Road is virtually complete, five years after the primary closed. Pupils moved to the £14 million Abbey View campus shared with Hayshead Primary School. St Thomas was used for storage before the site was earmarked for affordable housing. Angus Council hopes it can accommodate around 40 new homes. In 2022, housing officials said they were confident the 13,200 square metre St Thomas site could deliver a much-needed mix of one, two and three-bedroom homes. Alongside land at the former Forfar Academy in the town's Taylor Street, it was one of two former school sites earmarked for housing. Detailed plans for both projects are yet to come forward. Angus Council officials previously said any affordable housing project would likely involve a two-year lead in time. And construction could take around 18 months. St Thomas was previously at the centre of a proposal to house Ukrainian refugees in Angus. In 2022, the Scottish Government asked Angus Council to take part in a pilot project which would have seen modular homes created on the school site. Those would have been able to house up to 100 people. However, the plan was abandoned after Holyrood said it would not deliver value for money. Completion of the St Thomas demolition comes as affordable housing plans for another Forfar site resurfaced. Councillors this week approved the transfer of the former Gables home for adults to Caledonia Housing Association. Previous plans to develop the site collapsed due to spiralling construction costs.

Restaurant at 'flagship' Saundersfoot harbour approved
In an application to Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, Red Roses-based Rhianwen Lane of Catch Cymru sought permission for a change of use of Unit 21, Marine Centre of Excellence, Saundersfoot Harbour, Saundersfoot to a food and drink establishment with indoor seating and a takeaway. The proposal was supported by Saundersfoot Community Council. A supporting statement with the application said: 'Catch Cymru is an established, independent seafood business based in Carmarthen, with a strong reputation for high-quality takeaway seafood. 'As a result of the success and demand for our current operation, we are now looking to expand by opening a second restaurant in Saundersfoot, Pembrokeshire. 'Our aim for this new shop is not only to replicate our successful takeaway model but also to enhance the customer experience by providing a unique, seaside dining experience that will appeal to both locals and tourists alike. 'In addition to our existing offerings of fried fish and chips, the Saundersfoot restaurant will offer a broader menu, including seasonal grilled and barbequed fish, fresh salads, and a variety of side dishes to cater to a wider demographic, to include halloumi fries, corn on the cob etc. 'This expansion will also allow us to continue our popular takeaway service while providing a casual dine-in atmosphere with a drinks menu that features locally sourced beers and IPAs.' The application says a key feature of the menu at the dog-friendly restaurant will be 'Catch of the Day' specials, 'based on the freshest seafood available from the local harbour,' giving customers 'a unique experience and encourage repeat visits knowing that we support local fishermen'. It also plans to host live music events from local artists on selected weekends, especially during peak season and bank holidays to 'help create a dynamic and engaging atmosphere that encourages customers to linger, enjoy their food and drinks, but most importantly return for more'. An officer report recommending approval said the change of use of an existing chandlery from A1(Shop) to A3 (Food & Drink) 'will ensure that the vacant unit within the Marine Centre of Excellence is brought back into use and positively contribute to the character of Saundersfoot Harbour'. The Marine Centre of Excellence was given planning consent in 2016, subject to a condition which restricts the available retail floor space and its use. The report says a viability statement from the Saundersfoot Harbour Authority' detailed how the unit was no longer viable for A1/A2 use and that an A3 use would provide vitality and vibrancy to the harbourside location'. It finished: 'The proposed development will have no adverse impact on the special qualities of the National Park and will positively contribute to the character of Saundersfoot Harbour. 'A seafood business would fit within the character of the seafront at the Marine Centre of Excellence and will bring a vacant unviable retail unit back into use providing a benefit to the community and local economy.' The application was conditionally approved by park planners.
