Hamas co-founder killed in Gaza: IDF says it has eliminated Hakham Al-Issa; planned, executed October 7 attacks
The Israeli military on Sunday confirmed the killing of a senior Hamas figure, Hakham Muhammad Issa Al-Issa, in an airstrike in Gaza City. The operation, carried out jointly with the Israel Security Agency, targeted Al-Issa in the Sabra neighbourhood on Friday.
Described as one of the last remaining senior Hamas commanders in the Strip, Al-Issa was a founding member of both Hamas and its military wing, and served as head of its combat support headquarters.
According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Al-Issa played a 'significant role' in orchestrating the October 7 attacks that left more than 1,200 Israelis dead and saw over 250 hostages taken. Although the IDF did not detail his exact involvement in the assault, officials claimed he had continued to help plan attacks on Israeli civilians and troops in recent days.
He was also said to be involved in attempts to restore Hamas's operational structure, which has been severely damaged by Israeli strikes during the ongoing war.

The IDF also announced the killing of another militant figure, Abbas Al-Hassan Wahbi, from Hezbollah's Radwan Force Battalion, in southern Lebanon. Wahbi had allegedly overseen intelligence operations and was engaged in weapons transfers, which Israel said violated prior understandings with Lebanon.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate. Gaza's civil defence agency reported 37 deaths across the enclave on Saturday, including at least nine children. Airstrikes hit multiple areas, including a school sheltering displaced families in Gaza City and a home in Jabalia, where three children were among the casualties. Civil defence spokesperson Mahmud Bassal said two additional civilians were killed while waiting for food aid in the Netzarim corridor.
France's foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot stated that Paris, alongside Europe, was prepared to help secure food aid distribution to Palestinians, amid concerns that armed groups were seizing relief supplies. However, he gave no specifics on how such security would be implemented.
Efforts to broker a new ceasefire are reportedly underway. Qatar, working alongside the US and Egypt, said it was trying to build on the momentum from the recent truce with Iran to push forward negotiations in Gaza. Qatari foreign ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari warned against squandering this opportunity.

In the days that followed, Israel claimed it had eliminated around 30 senior Iranian commanders and 11 nuclear scientists, and targeted eight nuclear-related facilities along with over 720 military infrastructure sites. The conflict left more than 1,000 dead, including at least 417 civilians, according to a US-based Human Rights Activists group. Iran retaliated forcefully, launching more than 550 ballistic missiles towards Israel. While the majority were intercepted, the strikes caused widespread damage and killed 28 people. Over the weekend, Iran held state funerals for around 60 individuals, including senior military officials and nuclear scientists, who were killed in the conflict.

KOLKATA: A warrant of arrest cannot be issued against a person who was granted anticipatory bail, the Calcutta High Court's Jalpaiguri circuit bench held on June 13 while scrapping non-bailable warrants issued by a Kurseong judicial magistrate against two defence personnel. 'If someone is granted anticipatory bail, he is protected from arrest, and if arrested, he must be released upon fulfilment of the conditions imposed by the court while granting the anticipatory bail. A warrant cannot be issued against him because the bail order already provides him protection from arrest. The only event when such a person may be arrested is when he violates the conditions of bail as directed by the court for him to comply with,' Justice Rai Chattopadhyay held. The order of the judicial magistrate at Kurseong on November 26, 2024, was challenged by the two defence personnel against whom non-bailable arrest warrants were issued. Boundaries of administrative units to be frozen on Dec 31, 2025 for Census
The Centre has asked states and Union Territories to make any proposed changes in the boundaries of administrative units before December 31, when they will be considered final for the census exercise. In a letter to all states and Union Territories, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India Mritunjay Kumar Narayan has said that for the Census, all villages and towns are divided into uniform enumeration blocks and for each block, an enumerator is assigned to avoid any miss or repetition during the population count. These are termed Houselisting Blocks (HLBs) during Houselisting Operations and Enumeration Blocks (EBs) during Population Enumeration and serve as the smallest administrative units for the Census. India's 16th Census with caste enumeration will be carried out in 2027 with the reference date of October 1, 2026, in snow-bound areas like Ladakh and March 1, 2027, in the rest of the country. The Census will be conducted in two phases. In phase one i.e. houselisting Operation (HLO), the housing conditions, assets and amenities of each household will be collected. Subsequently, in the second phase i.e. Population Enumeration (PE), the demographic, socio-economic, cultural and other details of every person in each household will be collected. In the Census, caste enumeration will also be done, a Government statement had said. For Census activities, about 34 lakh enumerators and supervisors and around 1.3 lakh Census functionaries would be deployed. It is the 16th Census till now and the eighth after independence. The ensuing Census will be conducted through digital means using mobile applications. Provision of Self-enumeration would also be made available to the people. Very stringent data security measures would be kept in place to ensure data security at the time of collection, transmission and storage, the statement had said. For the Union Territory of Ladakh and the non-synchronous snow-bound areas of the UT of Jammu and Kashmir and states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, the reference date will be 00.00 hours of the first day of October 2026, a notification had said. This Census will be carried out after 16 years as the last one was done in 2011.
