Nunez ordered to serve ban after Cas rejects appeal

BBC News13-05-2025

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has been ordered to serve the remainder of a ban for his involvement in an altercation with fans while playing for Uruguay. The sanction was confirmed as an appeal against the ban was rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. In August 2024, Nunez was banned by South American football's governing body Conmebol for five international games, and fined £15,145 ($20,000), for an incident with spectators after Uruguay were beaten by Colombia. The 25-year-old was seen physically confronting Colombia supporters in the stands after the final whistle in the Copa America semi-final in July 2024. Nunez served two matches of the ban before Cas agreed to temporarily lift the suspension in October 2024 while the case against him was investigated following an appeal by the Uruguay Football Association. Four other Uruguay players were also handed bans, and fined, for their involvement in the incident at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, USA, all of which have been now been served. Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, 27, received a four-game suspension. Napoli defender Mathias Olivera, 27, Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo, 26, and Atletico Madrid defender Jose Maria Gimenez, 30, received three-game bans. The appeal by the Uruguay FA had sought to annul or reduce the suspensions and fines on the grounds the players acted in self-defence, but that was dismissed by Cas."The panel found that in this case the principle of self-defence does not apply," said a statement from Cas. "The conduct of the players constituted a voluntary, violent and unjustified action which was in violation of the Conmebol disciplinary code."Nunez will now sit out Uruguay's World Cup qualifiers in Paraguay and at home to Venezuela next month, along with the match against Peru in September.
What happened?
Conmebol had originally opened an investigation into what they called "unacceptable" scenes following Uruguay's 1-0 defeat by Colombia.Disorder broke out in a section of the stadium where many family members of the Uruguay players were seated.Nunez had climbed railings and made his way into the crowded stands.More than 70,000 fans were at the game in Charlotte, with estimates suggesting more than 90% of the crowd was there in support of Colombia."There was no police and we had to defend our families," said Uruguay captain Gimenez at the time."This is the fault of two or three people who had a few too many drinks and don't know how to drink."Uruguay boss Marcelo Bielsa said his players deserved an apology from Colombia fans for the brawl."How can you not defend your mother, your sister, a baby?" Bielsa said in a press conference before his side's third-place play-off against Canada."If they did not do it, they would have been condemned by all of us."

Darwin Nunez approves transfer to next club but Liverpool set 'difficult' price

Darwin Nunez has agreed to join Napoli with Liverpool setting a €70 million (£59.8m) asking price for the striker, according to reports in Italy. The Uruguay international, who joined Liverpool for an initial £64m fee from Benfica three years ago, looks set to leave Anfield this summer after failing to secure a regular role under Arne Slot. Nunez made 47 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring seven goals, but started just eight games in the Premier League. According to Sky Sport Italy, Napoli have begun talks to sign Nunez and the25-year-old has 'already given the ok' to joining the Serie A champions. However, Napoli view Liverpool's €70m (£59.8m) of Nunez as 'difficult' to meet. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Liverpool are demanding €65m (£55.6m) up front, plus an additional €5m (£4.2m) in bonuses. Napoli are exploring alternative options and are also in talks with Udinese for Lorenzo Lucca, who scored 12 goals in Serie A last season. More Trending Nunez, meanwhile, has attracted interest from Atletico Madrid and it's understood that the Uruguayan has also reached a verbal agreement with Diego Simeone's side. So far this summer, Liverpool have already completed the signing of Jeremie Frimpong in a €35m (£29.6m) deal from Bayer Leverkusen. The Premier League champions are also set to finalise their £116 million deal with Leverkusen to sign Florian Wirtz. Milos Kerkez is also expected to join from Bournemouth, with the left-back's father describing it as a 'done deal' with Liverpool earlier this week. For more stories like this, check our sport page. Forgotten former Premier League star is outselling Marco Reus, Olivier Giroud AND Sergio Busquets for shirt sales after becoming a surprise hero in the US

Shirt sales for former European stars Olivier Giroud, Marco Reus and Sergio Basquets are being outstripped by a Premier League cult hero. The trio represent just a handful of the talents currently plying their trade in MLS, a league that has only grown in popularity since the arrival of Lionel Messi in 2023. It's little surprise that the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner and arguably the greatest player to play the sport, tops the list for shirts sales this year. He is closely followed by his Inter Miami team-mate Luis Suarez. But there's no place in the top-10 or even then top-15 for their former Barcelona colleague Busquets, who finds himself in 16th place. That sizeable gap allows the likes of ex-Newcastle winger Miguel Almiron, Hirving Lozano and former Crustal Palace star Wilfred Zaha to slot into the top-10. But the most remarkable name in the expanded list is former Burnley midfielder Ashley Westwood - currently playing in Charlotte with Zaha under Dean Smith - who has the 11th most popular jersey in 2025. The 35-year-old become a fan favourite in his 18-months at the club following a free transfer from Burnley in 2023. In 93 appearances for Charlotte, Westwood has netted six times and has been ever present in the side since his arrival. Prior to moving Stateside, the midfielder spent six years at Turf Moor and was a crucial part of Sean Dyche's squad that avoided the drop for several years. Westwood also spent time with Aston Villa and was part of the squad that suffered relegation to the Championship in 2016.

Liverpool told to make swap deal as 'concrete interest' emerges in next transfer

Florian Wirtz is set to be Liverpool's next signing but the Reds' business is not done as Arne Slot engages in a busier summer overhaul of the club than 12 months ago The transfer window is open once again and Liverpool are whirring away to continue a busy start to the summer. Already the Reds have added Jeremie Frimpong and said goodbye to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Caoimhin Kelleher and there's more to be done. Florian Wirtz is set to be next through the door with a medical to complete on Friday. The German international will join in a British record deal. ‌ Milos Kerkez could soon follow from Brighton as Arne Slot looks to boost his resources. That could see Andy Robertson consider an exit however as he enters the final year of his deal. ‌ Slot will hope to tie up the deals quickly after the Premier League fixtures were released. The Dutchman will hope to have a full squad at his disposal in time for facing Bournemouth on the opening weekend. Mirror Football takes a look at some of the latest news and transfer rumours from around Anfield. Ekitike interest Liverpool have a 'concrete interest' in Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike, according to reports. The Reds will look to sign the young French star, particularly if they can offload Darwin Nunez. The Uruguay internaitonal is said to have drawn attention from Napoli, who are believed to be in contact with the player's camp. Liverpool are hoping to find a solution and his exit could spark a move for Chelsea target Ekitike. Alavarez swap deal Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann reckons Liverpool should use Darwin Nunez as part of a deal to sign Atletico Madrid ace Julian Alvarez. The Spanish side already appear to have poured cold water on an exit for the former Manchester City forward but the ex-Germany international believes the Reds could prove persuasive. ‌ Hamann has told "I'd love to see Julian Alvarez at Liverpool and I think Darwin Nunez being part of the deal would make a lot of sense. I think Nunez is tailor made for Atletico Madrid as a physical centre forward, someone who will work so hard which is what Diego Simeone wants. "Alvarez would also be a fantastic addition at Liverpool, he played in the shadow of Erling Haaland at Manchester City but really added to his reputation in Madrid. He led the line, scored goals and made life a nuisance for the back lines he played against, I think he would be a brilliant signing. Wirtz's parents earn fee Liverpool are set to pay £8.55million to Florian Wirtz's parent s as they move towards confirming the megamoney signing.. The German international is expected to soon complete a transfer to Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen. ‌ With a medical expected to take place on Friday, Wirtz will not be the only member of his family to benefit. The Leverkusen talisman is represented by his parents rather than an agency. Wirtz's parents Hans and Karin joined him when he travelled to England last month, and negotiated on his behalf. Sport Bild, per Sport Witness, claim they will see €10m (£8.55m) over the course of their son's contract with Liverpool.
