Moment two masked men storm a kebab shop captured on footage
Dramatic CCTV footage captured the moment two hooded and masked gunmen stormed a Sydney kebab shop in broad daylight, as passers-by ran for their lives as three people were shot.
Shoppers on the busy main drag in Auburn could be seen scattering and running for cover as shots rang out from inside M Brothers restaurant.
Alleged underworld figure Samimjan Azari, a man believed to be his friend and a female staff member at the shop were all shot during the incident about 1.10pm on Monday.
The footage shows the two gunmen, who remain on the run, fleeing the scene just moments after they entered the store.
Staff at a nearby supermarket told news.com.au on Tuesday that the 50-year-old kebab shop worker injured in the shooting was a 'very nice lady'.
She often came into their store to buy groceries and was 'always smiling'.
'We see her here for a few years now,' one staffer said. 'She was a very good lady.'
An alleged underworld figure was gunned down in the incident.
Samimjan Azari, his friend and a woman not known to either men were all shot on the busy retail strip at about 1.15pm on Monday.
Azari was shot in the arm and shoulder, while his 'unknown' friend was shot in the face.
Acting Commissioner Peter Thurtell said a 50-year-old woman who was shot twice in torso was working at the shop.
Just an hour earlier Azari had reported for bail at Auburn police station, just 750 metres away.
Multiple cars torched
Police are investigating a possible link between three suspicious car fires and the shooting, as a major manhunt continues.
A black Audi Q7, believed to be the gunmen's getaway vehicle, was found alight on Wigram Street in Harris Park just before 6pm. Overnight, two more car fires have been connected to gangland violence, although it's not yet clear if they are linked to the Auburn shooting.
The first vehicle was found ablaze at 3.10am on Tuesday in a driveway of a Merrylands home on Hilltop Road.
Ten minutes later, authorities were called to a second car fire, also in the driveway of a home, on Gerald Street, Greystanes.
Neighbours helped firefighters in extinguishing the blaze, but the car had already been destroyed. Police believe the last two suspicious car fires are linked and will investigate the blazes.
'Just an innocent victim doing her job'
Police Minister Yasmin Catley said the woman was 'an innocent victim doing her job'.
'All she did was go to work and she has been caught up in this shocking event,' she said.
'Look, I have to say, it's one thing for criminals to be shooting each other. But when innocent people get caught up in this, it is absolutely abhorrent.
'And we will not tolerate it.'
Acting Commissioner Thurtell said two masked gunmen walked into the shop and fired eight shots.
They unsuccessfully attempted to access an office at the back of the shop before fleeing in a black Audi with cloned number plates.
A car fire involving a similar car was reported several hours later in suburban Harris Park.
Paramedics treated three people for gunshot wounds at the scene before they were taken to Westmead Hospital for further treatment.
The unnamed man is in a serious condition at hospital, Azari and the 50-year old woman are stable.
The terrifying daylight violence prompted swift responses from NSW Premier Chris Minns and Police Minister Catley who vowed to bring down those responsible.
Witnesses described hearing 'multiple loud gunshots' and masked men nearby and one man was seen being loaded into an ambulance with heavy bleeding to his head.
A local business owner, Ashim Shresdha, was working in his nearby store when he heard the gunshots ring out.
'I heard five gunshot noise and then after about five seconds, another two shots,' he said.
Acting Commissioner Thurtell said Azari had reported to a local police station soon before the attack, under bail conditions imposed on him last month following another shooting in Granville.
Police believe he was the intended target of that incident on May 25, which left his bodyguard Dawood Zakaria dead and solicitor Sylvan Singh injured.
'As recently as last Friday, police had spoken with the man due to concerns about his safety. This man has already been the target of previous shooting attempts,' Commissioner Thurtell said.
'It's outrageous that these people have now taken their fight to the streets of Sydney. This is not what we expect in this city.'
He was later charged with possessing an unauthorised gun after a pistol was allegedly found in the vehicle.
A court heard drive-by attack on Woodville Rd was the second attempt on Azari's life this year.
In Brighton Le Sands three months ago, he escaped another attempted hit uninjured.
Prosecutors argued that Azari should not be released on bail because of recent shootings.
'Mr Azari is at the epicentre of this particular tit for tat gangland warfare,' prosecutors said.
'The streets will not be safe, it's all because of Mr Azari and the Allamadine criminal network.'
Mr Azari was granted bail, with the magistrate telling the court he believes Mr Azari wasn't a flight risk and that the firearms charges case was weak.
The investigation has been referred to Taskforce Falcon led by State Crime Command with support from the NSW Crime Commission and regional officers to investigate and suppress violent crime in Sydney.
The taskforce has charged 23 people with a total of 53 charges, and taken seven firearms and 20 staged vehicles off the streets.
Mr Minns said the criminals who committed this 'shockingly brazen' crime could 'expect to spend years inside small jail cells'.
'This is shockingly brazen and NSW Police Force investigators are already hunting down those responsible,' he said.
'We don't stand for it and NSW Police doesn't stand for it.'
In a statement released immediately after the shooting Ms Catley said: 'We are deeply concerned by the horrifying events unfolding in Auburn this afternoon.
'Multiple people have been injured in this public place shooting. Our thoughts are with them and their loved ones.
'This kind of violence has no place in our community. It's horrifying, it's unacceptable and it shakes the sense of safety we all deserve.
'Police are investigating. A crime scene has been established and surrounding streets closed.'
Footage of the aftermath posted to social media shows a heavily bleeding man being rushed to an ambulance.
The man was bleeding heavily from his head.
Solicitor Aqib Javed, who works across the road from the crime, said the scene was confronting to witness.
'I just looked over to the kitchen top (inside the store) and there was a person lying flat out, something went through his chest,' he said.
'It was definitely a very bad scene.'
Local student Abdul Faiz ur Rahman, 21, lives in the apartment block behind where the shooting occurred and although he didn't hear it unfold he saw the aftermath.
Mr Rahman said: 'People were running out, the police came running fast.
'There were two, three cars going away, and people were shouting again and again. I was standing here, I didn't even go [over] there.'
Business owners in the area told NewsWire they did not hear the shooting, and only became aware something happened when emergency services swarmed the area.
'I was serving a customer, I did not hear any gun sounds, then saw several police, ambulances and lots of people,' a woman said.
'I only heard sirens and police. There's usually lots of police in this area, but today's been non stop,' a man said.

Man arrested a day after woman's body found in bushland at Werrington
A 47-year-old man has been arrested a day after the body of a woman was discovered in bushland in Sydney's west on Sunday. A member of the public found the woman's body partially-clothed and face down at a reserve off Irwin Street in Werrington about 1:15pm. Police say she was also aged 47. Earlier in the day, a second crime scene was set up at a block of units on Parkes Avenue, 500 metres from the crime scene. Detectives could be seen coming and going from the ground floor unit and door-knocking nearby neighbours. In a statement on Monday night, police said the man had been arrested about 6pm at an address on Powell Street in Hobartville, near Richmond. "He has been taken to Windsor Police Station, where inquiries continue," they said. On Sunday police said they did not believe the body had been wrapped, but were looking over some items of interest found near the first crime scene at the reserve. "There were some items around the body, but not wrapped — so, other clothing items and other rubbish," Superintendent Trent King said at the time. Superintendent King added that the woman had been there "for a period of time". Detectives from the Homicide Squad and the Missing Persons Unit under Strike Force Dowerin were investigating the woman's death, with autopsy results expected to give officers a clearer picture in the coming days. Superintendent King told reporters at the weekend it was too early to tell if the remains showed any signs of injury of potential sexual assault. "We're hoping, certainly in the next couple of days, through both the post-mortem examination as well as the examination today, that we will have further information," he said. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Man charged after stolen car hauling stolen vegetables catches fire on motorway
An alleged veggie bandit hauling a boot-load of ill-gotten sweet potatoes and other fresh food has been charged after the allegedly stolen car caught fire on the M1 at the Gold Coast on Monday night. Queensland Police said officers spotted the 2009 Ford Focus bearing false registration plates driving dangerously in the northbound lanes of the Pacific Motorway at Robina at about 10.20pm. The car began shedding debris from under the engine bay before catching fire. The driver pulled over around the Gooding Drive exit where he was taken into custody and officers used a fire-extinguisher to put out the flames. No one was injured during the incident. 'A subsequent search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered a significant quantity of sweet potatoes, potatoes, wraps and almond milk, which had been stolen from a fresh-food grocer at Robina shortly beforehand,' Queensland Police said in a statement on Tuesday. The car had been reported stolen from Mayfair Place at Stretton, in Brisbane's south, in the early hours of May 27. The driver, a 36-year-old from Chambers Flat in Logan, south of Brisbane, has now been charged with three counts of stealing, two counts of fraud and one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, disqualified driving, drink driving, attaching false plates and possessing tainted property.

Man pleads guilty over footage of women getting undressed at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital sleep clinic
A man who worked in a sleep clinic at a major Perth hospital has pleaded guilty to a dozen charges relating to footage of women getting undressed. Police alleged Stuart James King, who worked in IT at the clinic at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, kept the footage on his personal computer. The clients knew they were to be filmed as part of their analysis and treatment for sleep disorders, but the footage was not intended for anyone's personal use. The footage, which showed the women getting undressed and dressed, was recorded in 2019 and 2020. Police charged King with more than two dozen counts of unlawful use of a computer earlier this year, after executing a search warrant at his home. Appearing in Perth Magistrates Court via video link from prison, the 51-year-old pleaded guilty to 12 charges but the remaining charges were dropped. He is scheduled to appear in court again in September for a sentencing hearing. The man worked in IT at the hospital and was not a clinician. After the charges came to light, North Metropolitan Health Service said "immediate action was taken" as soon as it was informed of the matter and he was no longer employed.
