Joe Lycett invites bulger to create Birmingham anthem
A ceremonial bugler said when he received a call from comedian Joe Lycett to create a Birmingham anthem he thought it was a "wind-up".Antonio Socci, a trumpeter from Perry Bar, Birmingham, was asked by the Brummie comedian to create a "fanfare tune" for Lycett's TV show, the United States of Birmingham. The new series follows him travelling across the US and other countries to bring 18 different Birminghams together in a signed friendship agreement with the West Midlands city. Mr Socci, 43, said he did not realise the song he created for the show would end up as something similar to a "national anthem".
He said the programme makers requested "a little fanfare", but that "it kind of grew and grew, and then all of a sudden it is now the United States of Birmingham national anthem," he said. The tune, which will feature on the fourth episode of the Sky series, was played for the first time on BBC Radio WM on Thursday.Mr Socci said the 30-second song contains the lyrics "Birmingham, 18 states together, friendships now forever, Birmingham united."
He has performed professionally on stage since he was five years old, after learning from his father, Antoine Socci who played in the Band of the Royal Regiment of fusiliers of Warwickshire."My father was pretty famous around the West Midlands for playing in a ballroom dance band for 60 years and he did all the big functions," he added."I learnt trumpet on the job, so I was probably one of the last generation to be out every night on a school night with my father's ballroom dance band, learning tunes."Having studied Jazz at Birmingham Conservatoire and previously been a guest conductor with West Midlands Police Brass Band, Mr Socci was appointed Bandmaster of the Band of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers, Warwickshire in 2019 and conducts them at engagements all over the Midlands. He has also appeared on BBC's Songs of Praise and CBeebies, as well as performing as a ceremonial bugler for the National Memorial Arboretum and the City of Birmingham.

Outlander star unrecognisable in chart-topping Scottish Netflix series
Netflix's brand new crime drama has proven to be a hit, and Outlander fans might remember one of its stars. Outlander enthusiasts may have noticed a familiar face in Netflix's latest series, Department Q. The crime drama has quickly become popular with Netflix viewers, swiftly rising to the top of the UK chart. Penned and directed by The Queen's Gambit creator Scott Frank, Department Q features Matthew Goode in the lead role as DCI Carl Morck, a bold yet brilliant detective heading up a new cold-case unit in Edinburgh. The programme is based on Afdeling Q, a collection of ten Danish Nordic noir crime novels penned by author Jussi Adler-Olsen. Department Q boasts a star-studded cast, including Kelly Macdonald, Mark Bonnar and Chloe Pirrie. Alec Newman also joins the cast as Paul Evans, introduced as an enthusiastic climber, reports the Express. Although he appears unrecognisable in his latest role, Outlander fans might recall him as Joseph Wemyss from the Starz romance drama. Joseph is the father of Lizzie Wemyss, portrayed by Caitlin O'Ryan. Get Netflix free with Sky from £15 Sky Get the deal here Product Description Alec's other roles include Edward Crowther in Protection, Niven Guthrie in Shetland and Michael Byrne in Waterloo Road. Meanwhile, viewers are likely to recognise leading actor Matthew Goode from his previous roles in shows such as Downton Abbey, The Crown and A Discovery of Witches. Renowned actress Kate Dickie, known for her role as Lysa Arryn in the HBO series Game of Thrones, also makes an appearance. Alexej Manvelov, who plays Akram in the show, expressed his excitement about working alongside such a talented cast. "It was just amazing," he told Reach in an exclusive interview. "I'm from Sweden and there's a bit of a different style in Sweden where we're a bit more process-oriented. "But just to come in and work on this high of a level of craft of acting. It was amazing and the ensemble is just... "I mean I've been a fan of Kate Dickie's for ages, since Red Road," he admitted, referring to his co-star who plays DCS Moira. "So just to have a scene with her, I was like 'Oh my god'." The official Netflix synopsis for Department Q reads: "DCI Carl Morck is a brilliant cop but a terrible colleague. His razor-sharp sarcasm has made him no friends in Edinburgh Police. "After a shooting that leaves a young PC dead, and his partner paralysed, he finds himself exiled to the basement and the sole member of Dept. Q; a newly formed cold case unit. "The department is a PR stunt, there to distract the public from the failures of an under-resourced, failing police force that is glad to see the back of him. "But more by accident than design, Carl starts to build a gang of waifs and strays who have everything to prove. "So, when the stone-cold trail of a prominent civil servant who disappeared several years ago starts to heat up, Carl is back doing what he does best - rattling cages and refusing to take no for an answer." All episodes of Department Q are available to stream now, exclusively on Netflix.

Netflix's Department Q is a hit with viewers, but will the series be renewed for a second season? Netflix's Department Q has quickly become a fan-favourite, and now its stars are eagerly hoping for a second season. Despite Netflix not officially renewing the show for season 2 yet, it has garnered acclaim from both critics and audiences. The compelling new mystery crime drama series boasts an impressive cast and sees DCI Carl Morck, played by Matthew Goode, leading an Edinburgh police department Cold Case unit. In an exclusive chat with Reach, Department Q's own Alexej Manvelov and Leah Byrne—who play Akram and Rose respectively—shared their aspirations for the future of the storyline. As we delve into the series, it becomes apparent that these characters have complexities beyond what meets the eye, leaving viewers with numerous unresolved questions about Akram's mysterious past in Syria. When asked about their greatest wishes for a second instalment of Department Q, Alexej's response was straightforward: "Just for it to happen!" Get Netflix free with Sky from £15 Sky Get the deal here Product Description Alexej further expressed: "I look forward to unpacking a bit more about Akram because I feel there is a lot more to tell." The series draws inspiration from Jussi Adler-Olsen's Danish Nordic noir crime novels that share the same title, reports the Express. Leah also mentioned: "For sure, we've got so many books worth of stuff waiting for us there to mine." The series, boasting 10 books, offers Netflix a treasure trove of content to potentially extend the show's life for many seasons should they opt for renewal. Both lead actors shared their excitement about portraying such intricate roles in the new detective series without divulging any spoilers. Leah was effusive about her character as she said: "I think it's just how incredible Scott writes that character. And I think something we see throughout the series is that we've got these people who are so multifaceted who appear one thing one level but then are hiding or have so much going on and it's such a joy as an actor to get to play someone like that because there's so much to explore with her." Alexej also expressed his appreciation for the complexity of his role, saying: "For an actor, it's such a perk to do a multifaceted character but also not to just reveal it. But just to do a little bit at a time and all these subtle things and stuff." Discussing the collaborative process, he continued: "And we worked on the backstory quite a lot on paper and references and stuff like that but then Scott let me do my thing and then he directed me, you know. And to maintain that mystery is also a trick of the trade that I really appreciate." Netflix describes Department Q as follows: "DCI Carl Morck is a brilliant cop but a terrible colleague.
