KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — A rideshare driver was recently cited in Campbell County for having illegal window tint on his car.
In Tennessee and Kentucky, window tints on frontside windows must allow more than 35% light in. The term is called visible light transmission, or VLT. 35% is considered a medium tint, neither too dark nor too light. This is the tint most police officers in Tennessee will overlook and not issue a citation, but they may cite you if your windows are too dark.
Aaron Campbell is an Uber and Lyft driver. As a single dad and student, he depends on a good running car for his livelihood. It was last month when he bought this 2022 Chevy Bolt from a local dealer.

Around two weeks after buying the used car, he was given a citation. His driver's side window was too dark. It happened as Tennessee Highway Patrol officers operated a check on 25W in LaFollette on April 4.
The ticket did not include a fine, as the patrol office explained the violation to Campbell. The citation said window tinted, frontside, 25%. Tinted front side windows in Tennessee must allow 35% light.
'I said to the trooper that I wasn't aware that the car was in any sort of violation,' Campbell said.
'He didn't say anything like that, he just gave me the citation,' Campbell said when asked if the trooper told him it was an issue he should have been aware of. 'And told me if I got it fixed before the court date on May 15th that the ticket would be dismissed.'
Jim Clayton: 'A great science museum is in our future'
On a window tint charts that can be found at window tint businesses are various shades of gray and different numbers representing Visible Light Transmittance, as Cameron Clamon of 865 Tint explains.
'The lower the number the darker the shade, so the less light come through. If you went to five that would mean five percent of light comes through,' he explained.
Campbell's window was 25%. It was too dark for a law officer to see inside. The percentage of solar tint can be found on the windows of most cars. Aaron plans to have the dark window film removed from his car.
'As an Uber driver and as a Lyft driver, they do periodic background checks. This is a Class B misdemeanor,' Campbell said.
It doesn't take to long to scrape off darker window film. Aaron intends to have it done as soon as possible. Clamon told us window tint laws vary significantly by state, with some states having stricter regulations than others.

Frontside windows for cars in Tennessee is 35 percent VLT. Much darker tints are allowed in Florida, 28 percent. Arkansas allows for even darker at 25 percent.
Campbell's car was sold 'as is,' and the car dealer wasn't responsible for the darker tint. If you're not sure about the window tint on your car or truck, visit a reputable shop that.

2 men charged with kidnapping person, demanding ransom from family in Pittsburgh

New details are emerging in a kidnapping and ransom case that ended at Frick Park, one of the city's busiest public spaces. Police say the suspects demanded a $150,000 ransom drop at the park's bleachers, where the victim's family ultimately delivered $22,000 in cash inside a Giant Eagle bag. Pittsburgh police have charged Donald Wilson, 36, of Pittsburgh and Anthony Bailey, 45, of Pittsburgh, with kidnapping, among other serious offenses. According to investigators, the crime began around 1 a.m. last Wednesday, when the suspects broke into a Pittsburgh home. They allegedly entered a bedroom, held the victim at gunpoint while they were asleep, and demanded drugs and money. Court documents reveal the suspects tied the victim's hands and feet, ordering them to keep their eyes closed or risk being killed. One suspect allegedly threatened, 'I've killed people for free, and I cut off toes for fun.' The suspects then forced the victim into a car and drove to the East Exit Motel in Monroeville, where they continued to demand ransom money from the victim's family. Park visitors who frequent the area say they were stunned to learn what happened. 'This is my sacred place to walk,' said Tonya Magwood, a local resident. 'It's serene, peaceful. To hear about a ransom drop—I was shocked.' John Cornack, who runs a children's camp at Frick Park every summer, called the situation 'concerning.' 'We'll be keeping an extra eye out,' Cornack said. 'We want to make sure people feel safe on these courts and on these bleachers. This is such a beautiful place.' Police were able to identify and locate the suspects through surveillance footage from the motel, where Bailey checked in using his real ID, and ride-share records from Lyft. The ride history helped investigators track movements to and from the motel while the victim was being held. One suspect was later arrested after a SWAT standoff at a residence in Pittsburgh. Before releasing the victim on a nearby street, the suspects reportedly took their cell phone and other personal belongings. The victim was able to get help from a family member and is now safe, according to police. Pittsburgh police have not released the name or gender of the victim in order to protect their identity. Exclusive: Lyft launches new ad formats

Lyft is ramping up its ad business with new formats, the ride-hailing company exclusively tells Axios. Why it matters: Beyond traditional publishers, more companies with consumer attention and first-party data have looked to advertising to diversify and grow revenue. Driving the news: Lyft's updated ad portfolio includes three formats. Sponsored Map Vehicles, now available to all brands, offers a full-day takeover of the Lyft map including custom vehicle icons and optional real-world car wraps and branding. Sponsored Rides by Mode lets brands subsidize standard or priority rides with their branding featured on the Lyft homepage and during the ride. Vertical Video is a full-screen, non-skippable video format that plays when riders select the Wait and Save option and are waiting for a car. This week, Lyft also announced measurement deals with IAS and DoubleVerify to verify media quality. The big picture: Lyft is one of many tech and retail companies building ad businesses on top of their platforms. Uber launched ads in its Uber Eats app in 2020 and later expanded ads to its ride-hailing app. Last month, it reported an annualized ad revenue run rate of $1.5 billion. DoorDash this week announced it surpassed an annualized ad revenue run rate of more than $1 billion and acquired ad tech platform Symbiosys. Zoom in: Lyft is on a smaller scale. CEO David Risher said earlier this month the company is on track to reach a $100 million annualized ad revenue run rate by year's end. But it's aiming to grow with new hires and products. Suzie Reider, who founded YouTube's revenue and marketing team and later worked as Waze's global chief revenue officer, joined in December as executive vice president of Lyft Media and Lyft Business. She told Axios that her team has embraced being a challenger. "Given that we do not have the scale that Meta or Google have, we hustle in the mindset of 'necessity is the mother of innovation,'" Reider said. "In this era of AI, algorithmic, massively scaled and programmatic media, our team will eagerly engage in creative solutions." Between the lines: The strength of these new ad sellers is a trove of first-party data, including real-time location, destination and intent, alongside an engaged customer spending meaningful time on the platform. Reider said a rider spends 24 minutes, on average, with Lyft between waiting and riding. Lyft has attracted brands with specific marketing objectives, including driving store traffic and raising awareness at events and conferences, Reider said.
