Carlos Alcaraz has revealed he made a "special request" to be partnered with Emma Raducanu for the mixed doubles event at this year's US Open, but she kept him waiting.
On Monday, it was announced that the reigning Wimbledon champion would team up with Raducanu for the new-look competition in August as part of a star-studded line-up. While they are not guaranteed to qualify - with entries open until July 28 and only 16 teams making the cut - they are set to be the one of the biggest draws for attending fans if they make it through
They will now battle it out with other pairs - including Jack Draper with Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen and men's world number one Jannik Sinner with Emma Navarro - in a bid to take home the top prize of $1 million (£750,000).
French Open champion Alcaraz has now revealed how his partnership with Raducanu came about, as he opened up on the pair's relationship having known each other for many years.
"The tournament told us about the mixed tournament," the 22-year-old said after beating Adam Walton in the first round of the men's singles at Queen's. "I was thinking that I couldn't play better if it wasn't with Emma.
"I just asked Emma if she wants to play doubles with me. Yeah, I made that special request," he added before joking: "She took a while (to respond). No, not that much, not that much."

Asked how the pairing would work on court, Alcaraz continued: "She's going to be the boss. The US Open came to us and gave us the opportunities to play mixed doubles. I'm super excited about it.
"I think it's going to be great. It was an amazing idea for the tournament.
'I've known Emma since a really long time ago, so we know each other. I have a really good relationship with her. So it's just going to be interesting," he added.
"We are going to enjoy it for sure. I will try to put my doubles skill on it. We will try to win. But obviously, it's going to be really, really fun."

It comes after romance rumours swirled around Raducanu and Alcaraz at Wimbledon last year, with the British star seen in attendance at Centre Court watching the Spaniard win his second successive SW19 title against Novak Djokovic.
While Alcaraz played down the suggestions of romance when asked why Raducanu was there, he teased that he wasn't sure if she "came to the finals or she came to see me," setting tongues wagging.
"I think Novak and I always put on a good game, a show on the court," he said after the final. "I think it is a beautiful game to watch. And [Raducanu] is from here, so I imagine that she wanted to come and see it.
"If there was a Grand Slam in Murcia, I would 100 per cent go to the final, even if I wasn't playing. I don't know if she came to the finals or if she came to see me! Who knows? You have to ask her, but I hope she enjoyed the final.'
However, the Spanish star, who has also previously been linked with sports marketing and law graduate Maria Gonzalez Gimenez and Spanish singer Ana Mena, has confirmed that he is single "but looking for someone".
"It can be difficult for a tennis player to meet the right person," he told the Molusco TV podcast. "Because they are always on the move. Who knows what will happen this year.
Asked if he was seeing anyone, Alcaraz added: "No, no, no commitments for now, I'm single. I've laughed several times with people close to me, when I discovered that three or four players got engaged during the winter break.

"I thought it would be my turn, but not yet," he added. "It's complicated to never stay in the same place, it's difficult to find the person who can share things with you if you're always in different parts of the world."

Tourist teases Brits because of difference between EU and UK queue at Spanish airport
Irish comedian Peter Flanagan arrived in Malaga Airport and recorded himself zooming past a queue of Brits who were waiting for non-EU border control A holidaymaker has divulged the advantages of travelling with an Irish passport post-Brexit, as he breezed through immigration at Malaga Airport while a long line of Brits queued for non-EU border control. Comedian Peter Flanagan captured his smooth passage and couldn't resist a cheeky jibe at the longer lines. Mocking the waiting Brits, he quipped: "The humble and brave country of Ireland. Look at that now, oh yeah, that's good, that's good." Since Britain's departure from the EU in 2020, British passport holders have been stripped of the free movement privilege once enjoyed within the EU and now have to join separate queues at EU borders. Reacting to his TikTok footage, one viewer remarked: "Yes, UK passport holders will be able to use e-gates in the EU, following an agreement between the UK and the EU, though implementation will be phased in starting in October 2025." Another chimed in with a personal anecdote: "I showed my Irish passport to UK customs officer and he said at least you have a real passport!". Another Irish citizen agreed, saying: "I showed my Irish passport in France and his words to me were ''Irish very good people, you go here' pointing me to a desk with no one waiting! The other queue was at least 100 long." Another commented on the Brexit vote's consequences: "This is what we voted for. Some of us were educated and knew this kind of thing would happen and didn't vote for this." Yet another defended the wait: "We British people would rather spend an extra 10 minutes waiting for immigration than waste billions to support the EU bureaucracy." One commenter wrote: "hhahahahhHAHAHAH I'm from Malaga, I've been at the airport thousand of times I can tell you FOR A FACT, that that empty lane he just walked into leads to a row of automatic scanners THAT DO NOT WORK (never have) so right after this video switched off, he turned around and got back in the queue."

Gout Gout's most expensive buy says a lot about him as he makes admission
Gout Gout has taken the athletics world by storm at the tender age of just 17 - but the Australian sprinting sensation has remained incredibly level-headed in his spending Gout Gout has shown remarkable restraint with his finances despite his rapid rise in the athletics world at the age of just 17. Hailing from Queensland, Australia, where he was born two years after his parents fled South Sudan, Gout Gout quickly developed a passion for sports. Initially an enthusiastic footballer, he soon shifted focus to sprinting, excelling particularly in the 100m and 200m events. Gout Gout first made waves at 15 when he shattered the Australian U18 men's 200m record, clocking in at 20.87 seconds during the Australian Junior Athletics Championships. But it was in December 2024 that he truly stunned the world. The young athlete blazed through the 200m final of the Australian All Schools Athletics Championship in 20.04 seconds, securing the second-fastest U18 time ever recorded, surpassing Usain Bolt's record in the same age bracket and breaking the Australian and Oceanian record previously held by Peter Norman since 1968. Despite the potential for newfound wealth to turn heads, Gout Gout has stayed grounded. In a candid chat with GQ, he revealed he has been modest with his spending, explaining: "I've saved a lot and I bought myself a new car when I got my Ps, so that's probably the biggest purchase I've made so far. I haven't gone crazy." Showing his true colours, he also shared his commitment to looking after his loved ones, adding: "Long term, I'd like to set myself up and set my family up." While he may be a few years off from Olympic glory, Gout Gout has already made waves in athletics, grabbing silver in the 200m at the 2024 World Championships in Lima and securing fifth in the 4x100m relay at the same event. On top of his international exploits, the youngster has dominated domestically, winning the U20 100m and the 200m at this year's Australian Athletics Championships with blistering times of 9.99 and 19.84 seconds, respectively. His striking achievements at a tender age have led to comparisons with the legendary Bolt, who captured eight Olympic golds and another eleven at World Championships during his own career. Embracing high aspirations, Gout Gout told FOX Sports Australia about his ambition to emulate Bolt's incredible dominance. He said: "The limit is just obviously winning Olympics and winning World Championships, and honestly dominating like Bolt did. I think that's a limit that's reachable for me." Although comparisons with Bolt have been frequent, the athlete expressed feelings of mild irritation at constantly being likened to the sprinting giant. Speaking to Nine last year, he said: "My stride length is pretty long, my knee height is pretty high and just the amount of tallness I get when I'm running. "I'm just me trying to be me. Obviously, I do run like him. I do sometimes look like him, but obviously, I'm making a name for myself, and I think I've done that pretty well. I just want to continue doing that and continue to be not only Usain Bolt but continue to be Gout Gout."

Rory McIlroy hoping to travel well in Connecticut as The Open looms
The 36-year-old saw his driver ruled as 'non-conforming' ahead of last month's PGA Championship before he missed the cut at the Canadian Open. Dreams do come true. — Rory McIlroy (@McIlroyRory) April 14, 2025 It was also tough going for McIlroy at the US Open over a punishing Oakmont course, where he battled to make it into the weekend before eventually tying for 19th. McIlroy, though, played his best golf of the week during Sunday's final round, where his three-under-par 67 was the joint best of the day. After playing at the Travelers Championship in Hartford, Connecticut, McIlroy will head back to the UK for a break before the Scottish Open and then mount his challenge for another Open crown at Royal Portrush in County Antrim. With plenty of background noise having again followed him at Oakmont, McIlroy hopes to be able to stay focused on the job in hand at the the final PGA Tour Signature Event of the season. 50 days until The Open returns to Royal Portrush. History awaits. — The Open (@TheOpen) May 28, 2025 'I think the weeks after major championships in these events sometimes when you are in contention and you are trying to win them, it can feel quite difficult to go play the next week,' McIlroy told a press conference at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell. 'After a week like I had at Oakmont, where you are not quite in the mix but you might feel you find something in your game, you are excited to come back and play again. 'This is the perfect sort of chaser for what Oakmont was last week, and nice to get out on a golf course where you feel you can make quite a few birdies.' McIlroy added: 'There's a lot of guys in the field this week where this is their fourth tournament in a row, so they have been put through the wringer the last few weeks. 'This is a welcome set-up where they feel like they can relax a little bit and not have to grind so much for your score.' Ruben 🤝 @McIlroyRory An open invite to a lifelong Red and latest winner of @TheMasters 📩⛳️#MUFC — Manchester United (@ManUtd) April 16, 2025 World number two McIlroy is set to head out to India for the new DP Tour event during October as well as back to Melbourne for the Australian Open at the start of December. As to whether Manchester United fan McIlroy will get the chance to bring the Green Jacket to Old Trafford any time soon, that remains to be seen. 'Probably not. I don't know if I will have the opportunity. If I do have the opportunity, I would like to. Yeah, we will see,' McIlroy said. 10 major championships. One defending champ. One local favorite. We're kicking things off with a BANG. 💥 — TravelersChamp (@TravelersChamp) June 18, 2025 McIlroy will tee off alongside American Keegan Bradley on Thursday morning. World number one Scottie Scheffler will defend his Travelers Championship title and has been paired with newly-crowned US Open champion JJ Spaun for the opening round. 'I didn't have my best stuff last week but was still able to get a decent finish,' said Scheffler, who tied for seventh at Oakmont. 'I have felt good about my prep work so far this week and I'm excited to get the tournament started.'
