ESPN analyst names Joan Beringer as favorite European draft prospect
Joan Beringer is projected to be a potential first-round pick in the 2025 NBA draft, and the Frenchman recently earned praise from ESPN analyst Fran Fraschilla.
Beringer is averaging 4.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.4 blocks on 61% shooting from the field in 51 games with Cedevita Olimpija in Slovenia. He has scored in double figures six times, including a season-high 12 points and five rebounds on March 4.
The 6-foot-11 forward boasts a reported 7-foot, 4-inch wingspan and is highly touted for his versatility, athleticism and rim protection. He is considered raw offensively, but has the tools to develop into a productive player at the next level, which has stood out to Fraschilla.
Beringer has also represented France internationally at the 2024 FIBA U18 EuroBasket. He averaged 9.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.1 blocks and one assist on 70.5% shooting from the field in seven games, helping France to a fifth-place finish in Finland.
The 18-year-old is among a talented group of international prospects, joining the likes of Noa Essengue, Kasparas Jakučionis, Khaman Maluach, Ben Saraf and Nolan Traoré, among others. They are all considered first-round picks, with some expected to go in the lottery.
Beringer will be a late arrival to the United States for the predraft process, with Cedevita Olimpija on track to qualify for the ABA League playoffs next month. He will likely have the opportunity to participate in a draft combine in June for prospects still playing with their international teams.
The 2025 NBA draft will occur June 25-26 in New York City.

Knicks Requests to Interview 2 Rival Head Coaches Rejected

Knicks Requests to Interview 2 Rival Head Coaches Rejected originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Knicks' overtures to speak with the head coaches of two rival playoff squads have been rejected. Advertisement New York recently relieved five-year head coach Tom Thibodeau of his duties, after he had led the club to its most successful season in a quarter century, a 51-win stint that ended in a six-game Eastern Conference Finals defeat to the Indiana Pacers. Under Thibodeau, the Knicks posted an impressive 226-174 regular season record, making the playoffs in four of their five seasons. Thibodeau's Knicks squads went 24-23 in the playoffs, and won four playoff series, amidst consistent roster churn. Just prior to training camp this season, New York imported five-time All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns, after having added All-Defensive Team swingman Mikal Bridges earlier in the 2024 offseason. Advertisement Thibodeau leaned heavily on his starting five during the 2024-25 regular season, before finally expanding his rotation during the postseason. Some critical fans — and, fatally, Knicks decision makers in the front office and ownership group — grew frustrated with the 67-year-old Thibodeau's perceived overreliance on a finite rotation. Still, Thibodeau got a lot out of his squads, and helped raise the ceiling of a franchise that had struggled to enjoy consistent success this century prior to his arrival. Brad Penner-Imagn Images Now, it appears that the Knicks are aiming to make a splash with their next hire, targeting a few head coaches currently on long-term deals with playoff teams. Advertisement Sources inform Shams Charania of ESPN that New York asked to interview with Houston Rockets head coach Ime Udoka and Minnesota Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch about their new head coaching vacancy. Finch, 55, has been serving as Minnesota's head coach since midway through All-NBA superstar shooting guard Anthony Edwards' 2020-21 rookie season. He boasts a 209-160 overall regular season record, and a 21-21 playoff record. Finch has guided the Timberwolves to the Western Conference Finals in each of the past two postseasons. Udoka, 47, has been in Houston since 2023. He owns a 93-71 regular season record with the Rockets and led the franchise to its first playoff stint this spring, a seven-game first series loss to the Golden State Warriors. Advertisement During his one-and-done season coaching the Boston Celtics, Udoka in 2021-22, Udoka guided Boston to a 51-31 record and an NBA Finals berth... where the Celtics fell to the Warriors. Provided Udoka doesn't have to play Golden State in the postseason, he seems to have plenty of upside on the hardwood. Charania adds that the Knicks have yet to reach out to ex-New York point guard Jason Kidd, currently the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks. Dallas would apparently reject an interview request, however. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 11, 2025, where it first appeared.

US concedes 4 first-half goals, falls to Switzerland 4-0 for first 4-game losing streak since 2007

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The United States gave up four goals in the first half and looked unprepared for next year's World Cup, getting routed by Switzerland 4-0 in a friendly on Tuesday night as the Americans lost their fourth straight game for the first time since 2007. Dan Ndoye scored in the 13th minute, Michel Aebischer in the 23rd, Breel Embolo in the 33rd and Johan Manzambi in the 36th. The Americans failed to put a shot on target and have lost four consecutive home games for the third time and first since 1988. Switzerland won its third straight match and extended the U.S. winless streak against European opponents to eight games since 2021. Fans at Geodis Park booed loudly as the U.S. gave up four goals by the 40th minute for the first time since Nov. 9, 1980, at Mexico and the first time ever at home, according to Opta. The match was played one year and one day before the 2026 World Cup co-hosted by the U.S. starts. Going into their CONCACAF Gold Cup opener against Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday, the Americans are 5-5 under Mauricio Pochettino, who took over after first-round elimination last year's Copa America led the U.S. Soccer Federation to fire coach Gregg Berhalter. Ndoye burst behind Nate Harriel to run onto a through pass for the first goal; Manzambi dribbled past Max Arfsten along the endline to leave Aebischer with a tap-in for the second; goalkeeper Matt Turner spilled Ricardo Rodriguez's shot to leave Embolo an open net for the third; and a mix-up when Quinn Sullivan passed to Sebastian Berhalter as the former coach's son slipped created a giveaway that led to Manzambi's first international goal. The U.S. had not lost four straight games since a five-game skid in 2007. The Americans were missing Christian Pulisic (wanted time off); Yunus Musah (personal reason not disclosed); Weston McKennie, Tim Weah, Gio Reyna (headed to the Club World Cup); Antonee Robinson, Tyler Adams and Folarin Balogun (injured); and Sergiño Dest (regaining fitness). Turner played his first game for club or country since March 23. Berhalter started in his debut, and Brenden and Paxten Aaronson became the fourth set of brothers to start for the U.S., and the first since George and Louis Nanchoff in 1979. Pochettino made nine changes from Saturday's 2-1 loss to Turkey, keeping only Arfsten and midfielder Johnny Cardoso. The U.S. made five changes to start the second half and Damion Downs made his debut in the 75th minute.

Nyara Sabally plays well in place of injured Jonquel Jones in first WNBA start

But that basket was only the beginning of what turned out to be an impressive return for Sabally. With Jonquel Jones out with a sprained ankle, Sabally earned her first career WNBA start and showed no signs of rust in the Liberty's 85-66 win against the Chicago Sky at Barclays Center. Sabally finished with a season-high nine points on 4-for-4 shooting. She also had three rebounds, an assist and steal in about 15 minutes. 'She looked great,' coach Sandy Brondello said. 'It was great to have her out there. But I think we can build on that. She's always consistent and every time she gets minutes, she's just consistently great. She knows what she does and how she can help us.' It was only Sabally's third game of the season. Sabally had missed the past six games with a knee issue. She had a platelet-rich plasma injection in her right knee to help with the pain. Nyarra Sabally made her first WNBA start in the Liberty's 85-66 win over the Sky on June 10, 2025. NBAE via Getty Images She returned to practice last week before being cleared Monday to play against the Sky. How long Sabally will be with the Liberty before she heads off to EuroBasket remains unclear. Brondello said she still doesn't know when Sabally and Leonie Fiebich will leave to represent Germany at the international tournament. Not that the Liberty are thinking about that just yet. They're just glad Sabally is healthy. Jonquel Jones, who sat out the Liberty's win over the Sky with an ankle injury, poses for a picture with French Open champion Coco Gauff before the game. NBAE via Getty Images Jones was on the court Tuesday, but wasn't cleared to play as she nurses a sprained ankle. 'She's not quite there,' Brondello said. 'We're always about making sure the player is ready to come back and as close to 100 percent as possible.' Brondello said Jones is 'day by day.' The Liberty don't play again until Saturday at Indiana, which gives Jones' ankle more time to heal. Kennedy Burke has been the breakout star of the Liberty's bench. Check out more newsletters Burke had another efficient scoring night, posting 15 points off the bench while shooting 6-for-8 from the field and 3-for-3 from deep. Through nine games, Burke is shooting 57.5 percent (30-for-52) from the field, including 63.3 percent (19-for-30) from 3-point range. Breanna Stewart, who played a season in Seattle with Burke, isn't surprised by the way she's been playing. 'Honestly, with KB, what I've seen the most is the way she's really took ownership of the role that she's in,' Stewart said. 'And whenever she's on the court, she's motivated to help the team but also very confident. And it's tough especially when you come to a new team … finding that groove, and now she's found it, and she's just doing what she does best.'
