Have you watched him? Maroons defend Mam's selection
Billy Slater has defended picking Ezra Mam for State of Origin just three games after his return from a drug-driving ban, adamant the Brisbane star will add to Queensland's squad.
Mam is expected to be rolled out as 18th man for next Wednesday's must-win clash at Optus Stadium in Perth, after being named in Slater's 20-man squad.
The uncapped Maroon will undergo scans on his knee before entering camp on Monday, after copping a knock in the Broncos' win over Gold Coast on Saturday night.
Queensland are confident he will be fit to line up, with Slater describing the injury as a "bump" when he unveiled his squad on Monday morning.
It was always going to be contentious, with Slater dropping captain Daly Cherry-Evans and picking Tom Dearden to wear the No.7 jersey.
But Mam's selection has added to the headlines.
The Brisbane five-eighth copped a nine-match ban for crashing a car while driving unlicensed and with drugs in his system last October.
Three occupants of the Uber he collided with were injured, including a woman and her young daughter.
Mam was fined $120,000 by the NRL and subsequently attended a rehabilitation facility and worked on a job site before returning to pre-season training in January.
Slater said he had not had a chance to sense how remorseful Mam was, having only spoken to the 22-year-old on Sunday night to inform him of his selection.
"He's the right person for that position right now," Slater said.
"I am sure people will have their speculation around all the people selected. That is OK, everyone is entitled to their opinion.
"He has been doing a great job since he returned. We feel the squad will benefit from him being here."
Mam has played three NRL games since his return to the playing arena and was booed repeatedly by the Brookvale Oval crowd in the recent 34-6 loss to Manly.
But Slater said there was no question over whether the Indigenous star had done enough to prove his worth to the Maroons squad.
"Have you watched the couple of games back? He has been pretty good, I don't think he has skipped a beat," Slater said.
"By all reports he has been doing a lot of training through the first half of the year while he was sitting out.
"He has been in this position before and been part of this squad before. I am sure he will take his opportunity if presented."
On one level Mam's inclusion should come as no surprise.
After his three-try display in the 2023 grand final he was brought into his first pre-season Maroons camp in February of 2024.
Slater then invited him into camp ahead of game one of the 2024 Origin series as a player identified as a potential long-term in Queensland player.

Wayne Bennett's blunt response over axed Broncos star Selwyn Cobbo
Souths coach Wayne Bennet emphatically denied reports linking the Rabbitohs with axed Broncos flyer Selwyn Cobbo after he was dropped by Brisbane coach Michael Maguire. Cobbo is off-contract in 2025 and has been linked with the Dragons, Roosters, Tigers and Rabbitohs, as well as the new PNG expansion team. The former Maroons and Kangaroos star was dropped by Maguire ahead of their 44-14 win over the Titans, in favour of Josiah Karapani, who scored a double, sparking rumours he may be on his way out of Red Hill. However, Bennett told The Daily Telegraph that Souths will not be making a play for his services and have had no contact with his management. 'He isn't coming to Souths,' Bennett said. 'I don't know where this report has come from but I haven't had a single meeting with Selwyn Cobbo. I don't know him. I've never met him. 'Look, Selwyn is a wonderful talent but there's been no discussions for him to come here. 'For a start, with our salary cap the way it is, we can't afford him. 'Selwyn isn't going to take a pay cut to come to Souths, so it's not even an option for us anyway. I've had no chats with him.' Maguire denied dropping Cobbo had anything to do with his future at the club and remains open to recalling him when his form and fitness improves. 'I don't look at it from that point of view (Cobbo quitting the Broncos),' he said. ''Selly' and I talk all the time about what we need to do, so I'll keep that (conversation) between us. 'There's obviously things that every player goes through at times and this is no different. 'Selly's in the background doing his work to make sure he gets himself right.' Cobbo's management remain hopeful Cobbo can re-sign with the Broncos and be a one club player. 'This doesn't affect our negotiations with the Broncos,' he said. 'Selwyn loves the club and ideally wants to be a Bronco for life like 'Alfie' Langer. 'We'll continue talks and he will go back and work on his game.' The 23-year-old has scored 48 tries in 80 NRL games since his debut in 2021 and has scored two tries in six Origins for Queensland and played one Test for the Kangaroos to date. Cobbo has struggled for form since being switched to the centres after scoring 20 tries in 24 games on the wing on route to the 2023 Grand Final. Maguire returned Cobbo to the wing in 2025 where he has scored five tries in 12 games, but he paid the price for the Broncos losing six of their lasts even games before the win over the Gold Coast in Round 14.

Blues accuse Maroons of 'mind games' over State of Origin II team selection
NSW back-rower Angus Crichton has questioned the make-up of Queensland's squad for State of Origin II, while vowing to "terrorise" Maroons halfback Tom Dearden. Crichton dissected the Maroons' line-up, which was published on Wednesday a week out from Origin II in Perth. ABC Sport will have live blog coverage of the State of Origin series. Jeremiah Nanai and Pat Carrigan have been dropped back to the interchange bench, while Kurt Capewell is listed to start at second row and Trent Loiero at lock. Daly Cherry-Evans's axing as captain and halfback was confirmed on Monday, with Dearden to wear the number seven jersey. "Surely Nanai's not on the bench and surely Patty's not on the bench as well," Crichton said. "I think they're trying to play mind games with us by naming those guys there. I can't see Patty or Jeremiah not starting. He (Nanai) was one of their best last game. "They played all right in that last game. Jeremiah was a point of difference for them on the kick chase, and some of his defence was good. "Then Patty, he's won the Wally Lewis Medal before, so it goes without saying … they might be trying to play mind games, but we're more focused on ourselves." Crichton, who earned man-of-the-series honours last year, said he planned to target Dearden. "It's my job as a back-rower to try and terrorise the opposition halfback," Crichton said. "The more I can get into a physical battle with them, the less we see them. "Some of my best games have been when I've done that, so I'm looking to recreate that with Tommy. I really like him, but it's different when you're playing. "He is a strong little bastard, so he will be running hard. It's a big call for Queensland, he is stepping into the number seven jersey for the first time. "I know he will be able to bring his best. I just have to make sure I am bringing better." The other major talking point from Origin I was the Maroons' decision to avoid sending a kick-off in the direction of Spencer Leniu. Queensland kicked off to the left and away from Payne Haas for the first two restarts of the match, setting up Mitch Barnett and Max King for the return runs. They then sent the next two kick-offs to the right and away from an infuriated Leniu after he had entered the field, again setting up King for the returns. Maroons coach Billy Slater claimed this week it was a decision made "on the run" due to his side being stripped for numbers. But Crichton suggested it was a premeditated call from the Maroons. "I know it was a deliberate decision," Crichton said. "I've heard that from people that were in there. They were told don't kick it to Payne or Spencer. "Every rugby league fan wants to see [Leniu take the return], so hopefully they'll do it this time." AAP
