Canadian-sourced plastics pyrolysis oil to boost BASF's recycled feedstock supply and Ccycled ® portfolio and support the production of high-performance, recycled-content products.
HALIFAX, NS, June 26, 2025 /CNW/ - Sustane Technologies and Germany-headquartered BASF have signed a long-term offtake agreement that will see BASF purchase premium plastic feedstock from Sustane's Chester, Nova Scotia facility, including output from both its existing production line and an upcoming facility expansion comprising a new line, tripling capacity.
The agreement builds on a collaboration between the two companies that has enabled Sustane to deliver high-quality feedstock from end-of-life plastics to BASF operations in Europe and the United States. Given that Sustane processes the hardest to recycle plastics, this is a major step forward in advancing a true circular economy for plastics.
BASF will take-up the pyrolysis oil from Sustane's plant in Chester, Nova Scotia. The pyrolysis oil will be used as recycled feedstock in BASF's production Verbund, supporting the expansion of BASF's portfolio of mass-balanced Ccycled ® products. The Ccycled ® portfolio now comprises several hundred products, which BASF's customers use for a wide range of applications – from food packaging to high-performance plastics for the automotive industry and functional textiles.
"This partnership with BASF affirms the value of our Canadian-made innovation on the global stage," said Peter Vinall, CEO of Sustane Technologies. "Sustane's unique product has a greatly reduced carbon intensity compared to fossil feedstocks for plastics and is notable for not requiring additional upgrading." "Together, we're closing the loop on hard-to-recycle plastics and proving that circular solutions can scale and deliver real economic and environmental impact."
Sustane has developed a breakthrough process that transforms end-of-life plastics- the kinds that typically end up in landfills or incinerators - into virgin-quality plastic feedstock that can be used in chemical production. Sustane's operations are certified under ISCC+, providing chain-of-custody assurance that the feedstock meets stringent sustainability standards.
"At BASF, we are committed to driving circular economy, and partnerships like this are essential to that mission," comments Paul Houston, Manager Business Development Americas, BASF. "Sustane's advanced recycling technology enables us to integrate high-quality, circular feedstock into our value chains and reducing reliance on fossil inputs while supporting our customers' green transformation goals. This agreement represents a powerful example of innovation and collaboration driving real impact."
The companies are now exploring opportunities to expand Sustane's capacity both in Canada and internationally, further supporting Canada's emergence as a global leader in clean technology and circular materials innovation.

Legislation to build One Canadian Economy receives Royal Assent

OTTAWA, ON, /CNW/ - Today, Bill C-5, the One Canadian Economy Act, received Royal Assent. This legislation is key to building a stronger, more united Canada by supercharging productivity, economic growth, and competitiveness. Once implemented, the One Canadian Economy Act will: Expedite nation-building projects (the Building Canada Act): Streamlining federal review and approval processes to increase regulatory certainty, helping attract capital, strengthening our industries, and moving towards greater sovereignty and resilience while protecting the environmental and respecting Indigenous rights. Remove federal barriers to internal trade and labour mobility (the Free Trade and Labour Mobility in Canada Act): Accepting comparable provincial or territorial regulations, where they exist, as meeting federal requirements for the movement of goods, services, and labour within Canada. This will allow more goods, services, workers and business to move freely across provinces and territories. With the Building Canada Act coming into force today, the federal government will immediately move forward on consultations with provinces, territories, Indigenous Peoples and private sector proponents to identify nation building projects and implement measures to streamline processes for other projects. This includes working with provinces, territories and Indigenous partners to adopt a 'one project, one review' approach to reduce duplication. This work will be led by the Federal Major Projects Office, a new entity that will be launched in the coming weeks. The Office will include support from an Indigenous Advisory Council with First Nation, Inuit, and Métis representatives. Indigenous partnership is a vital part of this legislation, and meaningful consultation will be key to the success of future projects. The federal government is committed to respecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples recognized and affirmed by section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982, and to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Over the coming weeks, the Prime Minister will meet with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis rights holders, with the first meeting happening on July 17 with First Nations. The Government of Canada is fulfilling its promise to build one Canadian economy out of 13 while upholding Indigenous rights and protecting the environment as well as the health and safety of Canadians. Quotes "With Bill C-5 today becoming law, we are removing trade barriers, expediting nation-building projects, and unleashing economic growth, in close cooperation with Indigenous Peoples. We will give ourselves more than any foreign nation can ever take away by building one Canadian economy – the strongest economy in the G7." —The Rt. Hon. Mark Carney, Prime Minister of Canada "The One Canadian Economy Act is a crucial step in our commitment to driving economic growth that benefits every Canadian. It will help attract investment in big nation-building projects that create good paying jobs, connect our country, and ultimately reduce our reliance on the United States. Together with provinces, territories and Indigenous communities, we are paving the way for a brighter future for all Canadians." —The Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, President of the King's Privy Council for Canada and Minister responsible for Canada-U.S. Trade, Intergovernmental Affairs and One Canadian Economy "Goods, services, and workers should be able to move more freely across our country. Free trade within Canada is about Canadians trusting each other. Thank you to our provinces and territories for their continued leadership, as we press ahead and work together for the benefit of all Canadians. The One Canadian Economy Act cuts red tape by removing duplication where there are comparable provincial regulations, making it easier for workers, businesses, and Canadians to work and do business across different jurisdictions. Trade within Canada is an essential driver of our economy, and removing barriers will help us build the strongest economy in the G7." —The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Transport and Internal Trade "In this pivotal moment in Canada's story, it is clear that the conventional ways of doing business no longer serve us. We must act decisively to secure our future, build big things in this country once again, and cultivate the strongest economy in the G7. Our goal is clear: to make Canada an energy superpower." — The Honourable Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources "Together, we are building an economy that works for everyone. The One Canadian Economy Act marks a historic milestone in creating a stronger, more inclusive Canada—one where Indigenous partnership is not only valued, but is fundamental to every step of development." — The Honourable Mandy Gull-Masty, Minister of Indigenous Services Associated Links Internal Trade Clean Growth Office First Ministers' statement on building a strong Canadian economy and advancing major projects Prime Minister Carney meets with premiers and shares his plan to build one strong Canadian economy SOURCE President of the King's Privy Council for Canada and Minister responsible for Canada-U.S. Trade, Intergovernmental Affairs and One Canadian Economy For more information (media only), please contact: Gabriel Brunet, Senior Communications Advisor and Press Secretary, Office of the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, President of the King's Privy Council for Canada and Minister responsible for Canada-U.S. Trade, Intergovernmental Affairs and One Canadian Economy, 819-665-6527, [email protected]; Laura Scaffidi, Director of Communications, Office of the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Transport and Internal Trade, [email protected]; Media Relations, Privy Council Office, 613-957-5420, [email protected]

Conflict-driven oil price spikes not sustainable: Report

Article content Continued geopolitical instability is unlikely to drive oil prices high enough for long enough to drive new investment into Canada's oil industry, according to a new report from the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC). Article content RBC economists Nathan Janzen and Claire Fan co-authored the paper Crude calculations: Assessing Canada's vulnerability to oil prices, which was published on Tuesday. Article content Article content Article content It cites the renewed conflict in the Middle East as leading oil prices to fluctuate. The price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) has swung over the past month from as low as US$61 per barrel at the end of May to a high of near US$74 last Friday. Article content Article content The authors note any high prices that come amid future instability are unlikely to last long enough to convince investors to put new money into the industry. Article content 'Price volatility driven by geopolitical events are unlikely to be viewed as persistent enough to change business investment plans,' the report states. Article content 'Any spikes in prices due to geopolitical instability will not be seen as durable enough to warrant the kind of large capital-intensive investments that have mostly been dormant over the last decade in the Canadian oilsands.' Article content It notes while prices spiked soon after the first reports of military attacks, those prices still fell short of the year's peak price from January and were little unchanged from two weeks earlier. But, it also argues that continued uncertainty or renewed conflict could see prices spike once again. Article content Article content 'Further escalation could push prices higher and create more uncertainty for Canada's already complex economic picture.' Article content Higher oil prices have an overall neutral effect on Canada's gross domestic product, coincidentally boosting revenues in the oil and gas sector and provincial government royalties, while also raising costs for households, according to the report. Article content As of Thursday afternoon, WTI was selling just above US$65 per barrel. Article content The Alberta government's budget for the fiscal year that began on April 1 set a baseline WTI price of US$68 per barrel. It has previously said that $750 million in government revenue swings on every one-dollar change in the price of WTI.
