Study unveils alarming smartphone use among kids during school time
NEW YORK, Feb 5: As discussions about banning phones in schools intensify, a new study has revealed that the average teenager spends a quarter of their school day scrolling on their smartphones. Research conducted by the Seattle Children's Research Institute found that adolescents aged 13 to 18 spend an average of 1½ hours on their phones during a 6½-hour school day.
Public health and pediatric scientists conducted the study to gain insights not only into overall screen time but also into the specific duration and content of smartphone usage, particularly during school hours. Senior author Lauren Hale, a public health researcher and mother of two middle schoolers, expressed concern over how phone use is impacting both learning and in-person social opportunities for students. 'School hours are precious,' she said in a statement.
The study involved nearly 300 participants who took part in a 15-minute smartphone-based survey, using the RealityMeter app to track their phone usage. After analyzing the data, the researchers narrowed the sample to 117 adolescents who used their phones during at least two school days per week. The results showed that while teens averaged 1½ hours of smartphone use during school, over 25% of them spent more than two hours on their phones each day.
In terms of activity, teens primarily used their phones for general internet browsing, text messaging, Instagram, video streaming, audio, and email. These findings were published in a research letter in JAMA Pediatrics titled 'Adolescent Smartphone Use During School Hours.'
The researchers emphasized the need for more studies with larger sample sizes to better reflect the broader adolescent population. Hale noted that much of the existing research relies on self-reported data, but this study provided more objective insights into smartphone use, allowing for a better understanding of when and how smartphones are used in school.
The study comes at a time when there is growing momentum to ban smartphones in schools. New York Governor Kathy Hochul recently released a report titled 'More Learning, Less Scrolling,' which aims to address the issue of smartphone distraction in classrooms. The proposed ban would take effect next school year, requiring public and charter school students to refrain from using 'internet-enabled devices' during school hours.

Four dead in Kyiv after Russia hits Ukraine with missile and drone attacks in 'revenge' strike
Four people have been killed after Russia launched a barrage of drone and missile attacks across Ukraine last night. Explosions were heard throughout the city as 20 people were also injured, according to Ukrainian officials. The attack followed a warning from Vladimir Putin that the Kremlin would seek revenge after Ukrainian drones destroyed several strategic bomber aircraft in attacks deep inside Russia. Russia's ambassador to the UK partly blamed Britain for the drone attacks, which Ukraine said destroyed dozens of aircraft. Andrei Kelin claimed Kyiv was escalating the conflict with its recent attacks in an interview with Sky News. He pointed to Operation Spider's Web, the codename for the mass covert drone attack. Mr Kelin urged Ukraine to "not try to engulf World War III", according to Sky News. In a signal that he believed the attack was supported by Kyiv's Western allies, he added it involved "provision of very high technology, so-called geospaced data, which only can be done by those who have it in possession". "And this is London and Washington," he said. Kyiv's metro transport system was disrupted by a Russian strike that hit and damaged a train between stations, Kyiv's military administration said. In the Solomenskiy district, a Russian drone slammed into the side of an apartment building, leaving a gaping hole and burn marks, a Reuters photographer at the scene said. Falling concrete blocks from the building crushed cars parked below. Two police investigators were examining what appeared to be the drone's engine. Earlier in the night, Reuters reporters heard the sound of Russian kamikaze drones buzzing in the sky, accompanied by the sounds of outgoing fire from Ukrainian anti-aircraft. Reuters witnesses reported a series of explosions powerful enough to rattle windows far from the impact sites. Some Kyiv residents sought shelter in metro stations, or in underground car parks. Russian air defences also shot down 174 Ukrainian drones overnight, the Russian Defence Ministry said.

Australian accused in mushroom murders searched for deadly strain before deaths, court hears, World News
SYDNEY — An Australian woman accused of the murder of three elderly relatives of her estranged husband by feeding them poisonous mushrooms said it was possible she had searched for lethal death cap mushrooms on her computer, a court heard on Friday (June 6). Erin Patterson, 50, is charged with the July 2023 murders of her mother-in-law Gail Patterson, father-in-law Donald Patterson and Gail's sister, Heather Wilkinson, along with the attempted murder of Ian Wilkinson, Heather's husband. The prosecution accuses her of knowingly serving the guests the death caps as part of a Beef Wellington at her home in Leongatha, a town of about 6,000 people some 135km from Melbourne. She denies the charges, which carry a life sentence, with her defence calling the deaths a "terrible accident". The accused, who began giving evidence for her own defence on Monday, was cross-examined for a second day by prosecution barrister Nanette Rogers on Friday. Rogers said forensic evidence showed a person using a computer found in Erin Patterson's home had conducted searches for death cap mushrooms on iNaturalist, a website where enthusiasts log localised sightings of animals and plants. "I suggest that that person was you. Correct or incorrect?" Rogers asked. Patterson replied: "I don't remember doing it. It's possible it was me", adding she did not know if it was possible that one of her two children had conducted the searches. The defence's decision to call Erin Patterson as a witness has re-ignited interest in the trial that began in late April. Podcasters, journalists and documentary-makers from local and international media have descended on the town of Morwell where the trial is being held, about two hours east of Melbourne. State broadcaster ABC's daily podcast about the proceedings is currently Australia's most popular, while many domestic newspapers have run live blogs on trial developments. The prosecution rested its case on Monday after a month of evidence from relatives and medical, forensic and mushroom experts. The trial, expected to conclude this month, continues on Tuesday.
