Tamil Nadu Cabinet Reshuffle: Mano Thangaraj Takes Oath As Minister In Stalin's Government

This comes a day after Tamil Nadu Ministers V Senthil Balaji and K Ponmudy resigned on Sunday, in the wake of the court cases against them.
Padmanabhapuram DMK MLA T Mano Thangaraj was on Monday sworn-in as minister, and re-inducted in the M K Stalin-led Tamil Nadu cabinet in a minor reshuffle post the resignation of two senior ministers.
Governor RN Ravi administered the oath of office to Thangaraj, who was removed as Milk and Dairy Development minister in the previous rejig of the cabinet. Incidentally he was allotted the same portfolio on Monday.
The event also saw Chief Minister M K Stalin and Governor Ravi meet for the first time post the DMK government securing a favourable verdict in the Supreme Court against the latter delaying assent to various Bills adopted in the state Assembly.
The CM and Governor shook hands and exchanged pleasantries.
Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin, senior minister Duraimurugan among others attended the swearing-in.
The Raj Bhavan later said that Thangaraj has been allotted Milk and Dairy Development. The Governor approved the subject allocation on the recommendation of the CM, an official release said.

Senthil Balaji, facing ED probe in a cash-for-jobs scam in an earlier AIADMK regime, had been asked by the Supreme Court last week to make a choice "between post and freedom" as it had warned him of cancelling bail if he did not step down as minister.
Ponmudy, a senior DMK leader, had courted a major controversy recently over his Shaivite-Vaishnavite remarks made in the context of a sex worker, drawing widespread criticism, even as the Madras High Court later initiated proceedings on its own on the matter.
The portfolios held by Balaji– Electricity, Excise and Prohibition, had been allotted to SS Sivasankar and S Muthusamy, respectively. Ponmudy's Forest and Khadi portfolios will be handled by RS Rajakannappan, who was hitherto the Dairy Development minister.
Further, the Governor had accepted the CM's recommendation to include Thangaraj in the cabinet. He represents the Padmanabhapuram Assembly constituency in Kanyakumari district and had been the IT Minister when the DMK assumed power in 2021.

Deportation may not require legal process: Himanta Biswa Sarma
The Assam Government may follow a 1950 order to fast-track the detection and deportation of 'illegal immigrants' instead of going through a long legal process, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday (June 7, 2025). He said illegal immigrants, once detected, will henceforth be pushed back without referring their cases to the quasi-judicial Foreigners Tribunal (FT) or any court. 'The process of detecting and deporting foreigners staying illegally in Assam was slowed down due to the exercise to update the National Register of Citizens (NRC). We can now push back such people without going through tribunals,' the Chief Minister told journalists at Ghagrapar in western Assam's Nalbari district. Assam has 100 FTs, the first few of which were established in 2005 to adjudicate the citizenship of people referred by the Assam Police's border wing on suspicion of being illegal immigrants, a euphemism for Bangladeshi nationals allegedly staying illegally in the State. Mr. Sarma said that a Constitutional Bench of the Supreme Court, while hearing a case related to Article 6A of the 1955 Citizenship Act, said Assam didn't need to route the cases of illegal immigrants through the tribunals. 'The Supreme Court observed that an old law, the Immigrants Expulsion Order (1950), continues to be valid. Under its provisions, even a District Commissioner can issue an order to immediately pushback illegal immigrants,' he said. The Chief Minister said that the State Government, made aware of this order recently, would deliberate on the matter thoroughly before implementation. 'We have already pushed back a large number of people, except those with ongoing court cases. The number of illegal immigrants being deported is increasing and will continue to do so at a faster pace,' Mr. Sarma said. On May 28, the government pushed back 14 people — all Bengali-speaking Muslims, who were declared foreigners by the FTs or facing charges as 'illegal immigrants' — into Bangladesh. Not accepted by Bangladesh, these 14 people spent more than two days on the no man's land (the neutral zone on the border between any two countries) before they were sent home in Assam. These organisations accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Government of indiscriminately detaining and deporting people suspected of being foreigners, without proper verification. On June 2, the Supreme Court declined to entertain a petition filed by the All BTC Minority Students' Union, which challenged the Assam government's alleged arbitrary deportation measures. BTC expands to the Bodoland Territorial Council. In May, the Ministry of External Affairs urged Dhaka to expedite the nationality verification process to facilitate deportations. The Ministry's spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, said more than 2,000 verification cases were pending with the Bangladesh government.

He refused to apologise and the film did not release in Karnataka. "I am the actor from 'Ek Duuje Ke Liye'..., Haasan told PTI during a recent visit to the news agency's headquarters, referring to his 1981 hit Hindi film about a Tamil boy and his romance with his Hindi speaking neighbour. Without imposition, we will learn. Don't impose, because this is ultimately education and we must take the shortest route to education and not put hurdles in its way," the actor said. The ruling DMK in his home state Tamil Nadu has long opposed the three-language policy introduced under the National Education Policy (NEP). The party has repeatedly accused the BJP-led NDA government of attempting to impose Hindi, a charge the Centre has denied. Stressing that the imposition of a particular language only hampers the learning process, the 70-year-old said, "I stand with Punjab. I stand with Karnataka. I stand with Andhra. This is not only place which is resenting imposition." The Indian cinema stalwart, hugely popular in the south as well as in the north with films such as Nayakan, Thevar Magan, "Sadma", "Saagar" and Chachi 420" that bridged language divides, said if you are truly looking at international breakthrough you must learn one language. And English seems to be fair enough. You can do Spanish also, or Chinese. But I think the most practical thing where the shortest route to that is that we have 350 years of English education, slowly but steadily. So when you suddenly replace it, it's all over again. You make unnecessarily many people illiterate, especially in Tamil Nadu. "You suddenly force all through Hindi and you tell them that you will not get your job beyond the Vindhyas, then you start wondering, what about the promises? What about my language? Am I not one of the 22 (official languages)? These are the questions that are coming." Tamil is one of the 22 official languages of the country, apart from Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Telugu, Urdu, Bodo, Santhali, Maithili and Dogri. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) had said it would not let Thug Life release unless Haasan apologised for his Kannada-Tamil comment at a promotional event in Chennai. His banner Raajkamal Films International filed a plea before the Karnataka High Court seeking protection for the release of the film, which sees him reuniting with Mani Ratnam after Nayakan in 1987. After a rap from the court over the remark, the producers said Thug Life will not be released in Karnataka.
