Indian Satellites Practising "Dogfights" In Space. What It Means

India is conducting a rare and very sophisticated "dogfight" in space between a 'chaser' and 'target' satellite orbiting nearly 500 kilometers above the Earth. This comes close on the heels of Chinese defence satellites practising "dogfights" in low Earth orbits in 2024.
Dogfighting in space refers to the concept of coordinated, close-range maneuvers between spacecraft, similar to the aerial dogfights between fighter jets.
The Indian attempt is one more useful extension of the ambitious SPADEX Mission by the Indian Space Research Organization or ISRO. A mission with many societal and strategic objectives rolled in seamlessly.
Two Indian satellites - zipping through space at 28,800 kilometers per hour, or at a speed which is 28 times faster than cruising a commercial passenger jet and 10 times the speed of a bullet - are autonomously participating in this precision flight pattern orchestrated by the ISRO. Both satellites have been conducting rendezvous and proximity tactics.
This current "dogfight" was preceded by an extended but manually conducted circumambulation or parikrama between the chaser and target satellite a few weeks ago.
In the SPADEX mission, India has already "successfully demonstrated docking and undocking twice over", ISRO Chairman Dr V Narayanan told NDTV.
After these extended docking and undocking maneuvers, the ISRO chief said, there was still 50% of the fuel left on the two satellites.
A precision rocket launch and frugal orbital management has left the two satellites with nearly 2.5 kilograms of fuel each, said the ISRO chief, adding that this helps extend the mission life.
Praising the effort, Brigadier (Retd) Anshuman Narang, Director and Founder Atma Nirbhar Soch, an independent think tank, said, "Through this dogfight in space, ISRO is pushing the right technological frontier. It's a good thing that this technology demonstration of peaceful robotisation in space through advanced swadeshi technology. This space modernization and autonomisation through indigenisation and intelligentisation is what today's atmanirbhar Bharat needs."
The officer, a space expert, keeps a close watch on China's space developments.
Incidentally, China recently demonstrated this huge capability using several satellites and even the US Space Force expressed concern that USA's rivals were closing the technology gap.
Earlier, the ISRO successfully demonstrated the docking of the SPADEX satellites (SDX 01 & SDX 02) for the second time on April 20.
Subsequently, power transfer from SDX 02 to SDX 01 satellite as well as vice versa was also exercised and accomplished on April 21.
The experiment involved operating a heater element in one of the satellites through power from the other satellite. The duration of power transfer was approximately 4 minutes and the performance of the satellites was as expected.
In the second docking attempt, the docking was completed with full autonomy from an inter-satellite distance of 15m till docking, whereas in the first docking attempt, an additional hold point was manually exercised at an inter-satellite distance of 3m.
The second docking experiment was preceded by detailed ground simulations and on-orbit trials incorporating the experience gained from first docking and undocking experiments, thereby providing immense confidence for the second docking demonstration.
The demonstration of the fully autonomous second docking along with power transfer marks the completion of an important milestone in the SPADEX mission.
The first docking was achieved on January 16 this year.
ISRO successfully docked two Indian satellites in space orbiting at 475 kilometers above Earth, becoming the fourth country after Russia, USA and China to have successfully learnt docking.
India launched the SpaDeX mission on December 30 last year using the PSLV rocket. Docking is an enabling technology for future missions like Chandrayaan-4 and Bhartiya Antariksha Station.

Lucknow: The Lucknow police has recovered 990 lost or stolen mobile phones between Jan and mid-May, out of around 1,100 complaints registered. The recovery rate stands at an 90%, showcasing how digital platforms like the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) have revolutionised mobile theft tracking across India. The credit for this largely goes to the CEIR portal of the department of telecommunications (DoT) under the govt of India, which empowers police to trace and block mobile devices using their International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI ) numbers. "Before CEIR, tracing lost phones across telecom circles was complex and time-consuming. Now, we can immediately block a device once the IMEI is entered in the portal. It is a powerful deterrent for mobile thieves and a great support system for citizens. The moment we block an IMEI via CEIR, the device becomes useless on any Indian telecom network. That alone has drastically reduced the market value of stolen devices," said DCP East Zone, Shashank Singh. Shubham Yadav, a 27-year-old software engineer from Indiranagar, lost his phone in Jan. "I filled out the complaint on the CEIR portal," he said. Three weeks later, the phone was traced to a shop in Sitapur, where someone tried to use a new SIM. "I got a call from the cybercell that my phone was found and was being returned. All my work contacts and data were on that device," Shubham said. In another case, college student Prerna Singh had her phone snatched while waiting for an auto in Mahanagar. "I reported the snatching to the local police and submitted the FIR copy on the CEIR site the same evening," she said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Within 10 days, the phone was tracked when it connected to a network in Unnao, and a suspect was identified through tower dump data and IMEI tracing. "They not only recovered my phone but also arrested the person who had a record of similar offences," Prerna said. Former IPS officer and cyber expert, Triveni Singh said that the CEIR platform allows users to block a lost or stolen mobile by entering their IMEI number, uploading a copy of their police complaint or FIR, and verifying their identity. "The phone is blacklisted across all telecom operators in India. If the device is found or switched on anywhere, law enforcement is alerted. Police can then initiate recovery by tracking the device's activity via cell tower triangulation and location pings," he said. "It's like an Aadhaar for phones. Every device has a digital fingerprint. Once blocked, it is useless to thieves but priceless to us," said a senior cybercell officer. The police have urged citizens to note down their IMEI numbers (printed on the device box or dial *#06# on the phone) and act fast when a device is lost. "It's no longer about chasing after criminals blindly. With data and digital footprints, we can now outsmart them," said ACP Mahanagar, Neha Tripathi.

The billionaire also spearheaded Trump's so-called Department of Government Efficiency, charged with cutting federal spending, which generated controversy. He now returns to his empire facing several challenges, but also numerous advantages. Tesla's sales slide is testing investor patience, yet SpaceX and Starlink dominate their respective markets, often serving as the default choice for commercial launches and satellite internet deployment. Foreign governments have also increasingly looked to Starlink, with regulatory approvals smoothed by Musk's close ties to Trump. That relationship, however, has drawn scrutiny. Shortly before he announced his exit from Washington, Musk criticized the tax bill that is making its way through Congress. In addition, he had recently pledged to spend less money on politics after he plunked down nearly $300 million on Trump's presidential campaign and on other Republican candidates last year. Steve Davis, a close associate of Musk and key in running the agency's day-to-day operations, has stepped down from his DOGE leadership role, according to a source familiar with the matter. SpaceX's launch this week failed more quickly than expected, exploding over the Indian Ocean without achieving some of its most important testing goals. The result puts another pause in Musk's speedy development goals for the rocket, which is bound to play a central role in the U.S. space program. Federal regulators had granted SpaceX a license for Starship's latest flight attempt four days ago, capping an investigation of a mishap that had grounded Starship for nearly two months. SpaceX has long had its own management team led by Gwynne Shotwell, though after the latest launch, Musk said he planned to spend more time on the company. The Starship rocket is still many steps away from being able to land humans on the moon or Mars. "He's not an official part of the government, but obviously maintains connections," said Thomas Martin, senior portfolio manager at Tesla investor Globalt Investments. "So I think there's a slight diminishment of influence at the margin, but I don't think it's going to move the needle on regulatory matters anyway." Musk has been quiet for months about legislation in Congress that takes aim at electric vehicles , but late on Wednesday, Tesla Energy criticized Republican plans to end energy tax credits. "Abruptly ending the energy tax credits would threaten America's energy independence and the reliability of our grid," Tesla Energy wrote on its X account. The Republican tax plan could cut tax breaks for electric vehicle purchases and leases, phase out battery production credits and cut clean-energy incentives for solar. Tesla's robotaxi launch next month is crucial to Musk's plan to shift focus from an affordable electric vehicle to autonomous vehicles and the company's Optimus humanoid robots. Shortly after news of his Washington departure, Musk said Tesla has been testing driverless Model Y cars in Austin, Texas, with plans to deliver the first vehicles in June. "Next month, first self-delivery from factory to customer," he said.
