US citizen shot dead after hijacking small plane in Belize

Yahoo17-04-2025

A US citizen hijacked a small Tropic Air plane in Belize on Thursday at knifepoint, injuring three others before being shot and killed, police said.
The assailant pulled a knife while the plane was in air, demanding the domestic flight take him out of the country, Police Commissioner Chester Williams told journalists.
The hijacker was identified as US citizen Akinyela Sawa Taylor, Williams said, adding that it appeared Taylor was a military veteran.
The plane circled the airspace between northern Belize and capital Belize City as the hijacking was underway, and began to run dangerously low on fuel, the police commissioner said.
Taylor stabbed three people on board, according to Williams, including the pilot and a passenger who shot Taylor with a licensed firearm as the plane landed outside Belize City.
That passenger was rushed to the hospital, as was Taylor, who died from the gunshot wound.
Williams said that it was unclear how Taylor boarded the plane with a knife, though he acknowledged that the country's smaller airstrips lacked security to fully search passengers.
The attacker had been denied entry to the country over the weekend, according to police. The plane had been due to fly the short route from Corozal near the Mexican border to San Pedro, off the coast. Police said it was unclear how Taylor reached Corozal.
Belizean authorities have reached out to the US embassy in the country for aid in investigating the incident. Luke Martin, public affairs officer for the embassy, told journalists that it had no details on Taylor's background or motivation so far.
According to information released by the airport, Taylor was a teacher in the United States. He was listed online as previously being a football coach at the McCluer North High School in Florissant, Missouri.
An employee at the school told Reuters that Taylor did not currently work there.

55 tons of meth precursor chemicals seized: Border officials

(NewsNation) — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection seized more than 55 tons of dicumyl peroxide, a chemical precursor used to produce methamphetamines and other narcotics, last week at the Port of Long Beach, California, according to an ICE news release. According to immigration officials, the shipment originated in China and was en route to the Sinaloa cartel in Mexico. Cartels using teens to smuggle people across border, officials warn 'For far too long, the Mexican drug cartels have raked in billions of dollars at the expense of our local communities, leaving nothing but addiction, death and despair in their wake,' said ICE special agent Chad Plantz. 'This initiative provides HSI with a game-changing method to stay one step ahead of the cartels by disrupting the flow of chemicals that they depend on to produce illicit narcotics.' The Sinaloa cartel is known for its violence, engaging in shootouts, kidnappings, torture and murders and targeting officials. It controls the drug trade in various parts of Central America and in many areas of Mexico, including in the border city of Tijuana, across from San Diego, according to U.S. officials. Chinese authorities issue bounty for hackers said linked to Taiwan

BEIJING (Reuters) -The public security bureau in the Chinese city of Guangzhou has put up an undisclosed bounty for more than 20 people it suspects carried out cyber attacks in China, the official news agency Xinhua said on Thursday. The authorities said the hackers were linked to the Taiwan government and named one of them as Ning Enwei. There was no information on the size of the bounty in Chinese state media. Chinese authorities accused Taiwan of organising, planning and premeditating attacks on key sectors such as military, aerospace, government departments, energy and transportation, maritime affairs, science and technology research firms in China as well as in special administration regions Hong Kong and Macau, Xinhua said. Taiwan's government did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Xinhua, citing a cybersecurity report, said the Taiwan "information, communication and digital army" has cooperated with U.S. anti-Chinese forces to conduct public opinion and cognitive warfare against China, secretly instigate revolution and attempt to disrupt public order in China. Last week authorities in Guangzhou, capital of the southern Guangdong province, attributed a cyberattack on an unnamed technology company to the Taiwan government, saying Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supported the "overseas hacker organisation" responsible. The accusation prompted Taiwan to blame China for peddling false information, saying it was China who was carrying out hacking against the island. China views Taiwan as its own territory. Taiwan's democratically elected government rejects Beijing's sovereignty claims. Chinese courts and legal bodies have no jurisdiction in separately governed Taiwan, whose government has repeatedly complained about Beijing's "long armed jurisdiction" efforts.

Teen's Body Found in Beloved Lake as Deaths Pile Up

Authorities announced that a body has been found on a popular lake in Austin, TX, after a teenage boy went missing over the weekend. A spokesperson for the Austin Police Department said the teenager went missing Sunday when he and his family hopped on paddleboards and kayaks for a stroll on Lady Bird Lake, a popular summer destination for both locals and tourists. It's unclear when, but the teenage boy went missing. Authorities immediately launched a search and rescue effort, to no avail. Then, on Tuesday at around 7:45 a.m., a paddleboarder made the grim discovery when they spotted the body floating in the water near the intersection of West Riverside Drive and South Lamar have since said that the body discovered Tuesday morning was a teenage boy who investigators say was "unknowingly standing near an underwater shelf." Authorities believe the teenage boy slipped or fell off the underwater shelf, which authorities say is a sudden drop-off in the lake. Lady Bird Lake is a dammed section of the Colorado River. The artificial lake stretches more than five miles. While police have not yet positively identified the body recovered on Tuesday, they say the clothing matches the missing teenager's outfit. Police also said that the teenage boy's lifejacket and belongings were still on his kayak. According to data obtained by Fox 7, at least 38 bodies have been found in or around Lady Bird Lake since 2022. The outlet reports that, of those bodies found, 30 were male, and just over 60 percent were between 30 and 49 years old. Only two were teenagers, including the body discovered on Tuesday. In just the last three years, the cause of deaths for most of the bodies discovered on Lady Bird Lake have been attributed to accidental drownings, Fox 7 reports. Suicide, drug overdoses and natural causes are second on the list. Fox 7 also reports that only one case has been ruled a murder and some half a dozen cases remain emphasized that no foul play is suspected in Tuesday's discovery. With a picturesque backdrop of Austin's ever changing skyline, Lady Bird Lake offers a number of summer activities for locals and tourists, including watching the nightly emergence of nearly 2 million Mexican bats taking refuge under the South Congress Avenue bridge. Boats, kayakers and paddleboarders -- along with a throng of bystanders on the bridge and on a number of hotel balconies across the lake -- wait for the emergence of these bats before sunset.
