Norwegian man sleeps through massive container ship running aground on his front lawn

Johan Helberg, who lives in Byneset, on the Trondheim Fjord, was woken by his neighbour on Thursday morning asking if he had noticed a boat outside, TV2 Norway reported. When he looked out his door, he saw a 135m-long container ship parked up in his front yard. Bystanders look at the grounded ship. His neighbor, Jostein Jørgensen, who lives about 40m from the beach, told TV2 he was woken around 5 a.m. by the sound of a boat approaching. "When I looked out the window, I saw a boat speeding toward the shore," he told the local TV network, adding that he ran outside and shouted to raise the alarm. Jørgensen said the boat, the NCL Salten, got closer and closer until it ran aground about eight metres from the wall of his neighbour's house. "He was lying asleep and surprised he had a visitor," Jørgensen told TV2. The vessel was reportedly bound for Orkanger, at the southern end of the fjord, and had 16 people aboard when it ran aground. (Jan Langhaug/AFP/Getty Images) Bente Hetland, managing director of the shipping company NCL, called it a "serious incident" and said the company was "grateful that nobody was injured in the grounding." "At present time, we do not know what caused the incident and are awaiting the conclusion of the ongoing investigation by the relevant authorities," Hetland said in a statement. "We are currently assessing the damage to the ship." A tugboat was initially sent to try to pull the vessel free, to no avail. On Thursday evening, a salvage company tried to mount an attempt to refloat the ship at high tide, but it was later decided it was not possible, the Norwegian Coastal Administration said in a statement. It said geotechnical investigations were now needed before another attempt could be made. While there have been no signs of oil leaking from the vessel, the authority said it had an oil response vessel on standby to respond, if needed. CONTACT US

Banksy has shared a new artwork — and its location has just been found
World-renowned street artist Banksy has revealed his latest piece of art on social media, with a French news agency reporting it has been discovered in Marseilles, France. Banksy posted two still images of the artwork to his 13.2 million followers on Instagram, but kept the location a mystery. Fans of Banksy and online sleuths speculated the location could be in Marseille. The AFP news agency said on Friday, local time, it had confirmed the artwork was located on a "quiet street" near the Catalans beach not far from Marseille's city centre. In the piece, a lighthouse is drawn on a bland, beige-coloured wall with the words "I want to be what you saw in me" written in front of it. A fake shadow appears to have been drawn on the footpath, stemming from a nearby pole which in turn gives the illusion that the lighthouse is a silhouette of the street pole. The first image is a close up of the artwork and the second shows two people walking with dogs next to the piece of art. "It's fascinating that Banksy chose a city like Marseille, which has so much art, foreigners and life," local carpenter Esteban Roldan told AFP. "This is huge, Banksy in Marseille," another local, Virginie Foucault, added. She said she was having lunch nearby. "I thought to myself, 'I'm not going to find it in Les Catalans,' and then, by chance — I never go there — there it is," she said. "We love it!" Last year Banksy unveiled a number of artworks showing animals painted around London city centre. He began his career spray-painting buildings in Bristol, England, and has become one of the world's best-known artists. His work has sold for millions of dollars at auction, and past murals on outdoor sites have often been stolen or removed by building owners soon after going up.

Ship pulled free after running aground near Norway home
Salvagers on Tuesday pulled a cargo ship, which made world headlines for running aground a stone's throw from a house in Norway, back into the water, the head of the company managing the operation said. A Ukrainian sailor in his 30s was on watch at the time and said he had fallen asleep, according to Norwegian police, who have charged him with "negligent navigation". The NCL Salten sailed up onto shore just metres from a wooden house around dawn on Thursday. "It's good to have said hello, but now it's time to say goodbye" the occupant of the house, Johan Helberg, told broadcaster NRK on Tuesday. The containers on the ship, except for those removed to lighten the bow, are still on board and will be unloaded this evening, Ole T. Bjornevik, the managing director of BOA Offshore told AFP, adding that the operation only lasted 30 minutes. "She has just been refloated," and an inspection is underway, he added. The Ukrainian seaman has said none of the cargo ship's collision alarms had worked, prosecutor Kjetil Bruland Sorensen told news agency NTB. The investigation will also look into whether the rules on working hours and rest periods were adhered to on ship, according to police. Helberg, also slept through the incident and only discovered the unexpected visitor when a panicked neighbour called him on the phone. None of the 16 crew members were injured. nzg/jll/jm
