Prep talk: Freshmen making impact for Sherman Oaks Notre Dame softball
Sherman Oaks Notre Dame High's softball team is on a nine-game winning streak, with six freshmen making major contributions.
Freshman Keira Luderer hit two home runs in a comeback win over Sierra Canyon in the Knights' Mission League opener on Thursday. Freshman Molly Coppola hit a walk-off home run against the Trailblazers. Luderer's twin sister, Kelsey, is hitting .452.

There's also Haley Maldonado with a .469 average and outfielder Jackie Morales batting .521 with three home runs and 26 RBIs. Pitcher Alyssa Lusk also is gaining experience in a backup role.
Coach Justin Siegel is convinced as these freshmen gain experience, the Knights will become a top team in Southern California. Notre Dame is 13-3. …
The track and field season continues Saturday with the Orange County championships at Mission Viejo, the Santa Monica Invitational and the Simi Valley Invitational.

Dan Keeler went from Notre Dame High to commander of USS Abraham Lincoln
For all the push-ups completed, for all the running drills endured and for all the yelling received during his days playing high school football at Sherman Oaks Notre Dame High in the 1990s, Dan Keeler is getting the last laugh later this month when he takes command of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in Coronado. 'Now I'm going to have to salute him,' former Notre Dame coach Kevin Rooney quipped. Keeler, who graduated from high school in 1994 and went on to the Naval Academy, is taking command of one of the Navy's most prominent ships. 'It is incredible that he has earned this responsibility,' Rooney said. Keeler was a defensive back and track athlete for the Knights and is one of five siblings who attended Notre Dame. Track coach Joe McNab, who just won his 11th Southern Section championship, was his defensive backs coach. 'Good kid,' McNab said. 'He's a guy who fit all the boxes in terms of being a great kid and doing things right,' Rooney said. Rooney, McNab and former football assistant Jeff Kraemer will make the trip to the San Diego area for the change-of-command ceremony. For some reason, Keeler invited his former high school coaches after all those days of sweat and tears in Sherman Oaks. 'If I had known he was going to be so powerful, I wouldn't have made him run so much,' Kraemer said. Keeler isn't the first Notre Dame graduate to rise in the Navy ranks. Retired Adm. Mike Mullen was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2007 to 2011 and graduated from Notre Dame in 1964. Mullen once came back to his alma mater to address the student body. Rooney, who retired in 2019 after 40 years as football coach, said his goal was always to 'help kids become great people and do things right.' Coaches know that the best day of all is when a graduate comes back to campus and tells them how they are doing and explains how lessons learned as teenagers really made a difference in their life. As summer begins and graduates move on with their lives and the class of 2029 arrives, it's a good reminder to everyone that it's not wins and losses that matter most in high school. It's teaching life lessons and preparing students to become adults, good people and good community members. To see a former Los Angeles-area high school football player take charge of an aircraft carrier is proof that all that running to gain stamina, all that preaching to work together as a team, all those lectures that practice makes perfect … it's true. You only need to listen, learn and dedicate yourself to reaching a goal. A salute to all the coaches and teachers who understand their real job is to create opportunities for their students to succeed through wisdom and inspiration. Capt. Birmingham's Antrell Harris captures City Section titles in 100 and 200 meters

And did he ever. The Birmingham senior won the boys 100 meters and went on to win the 200 meters about 90 minutes later. Harris won the 100 in 10.92 seconds and took the lead on the backstretch to win the 200 in 21.66, holding off Granada Hills' Justin Hart by nine hundredths of a second. Advertisement 'I especially wanted to win the 200 because it's my best race and I had to prove it,' said Harris, who ran his personal best in that event (21.32) at the Simi Valley Invitational. 'My goal for state is to make the second day." The boys 400 meters, one of the most anticipated races of the meet, proved to be one of the closest. Hart took the lead around the final turn and held off a late kick by Venice's Nathan Santa Cruz to prevail by three hundredths of a second in 47.45. 'I had to keep pumping my arms and hold my form the last 50 meters,' Hart said. 'I knew it would be a tough race. My goals for state would be 46.6 in the 400 and 21.10 or lower for the 200.' 'Negative wind stopped me from getting PRs, especially in the 200 because it's longer. I like the state meet and I've PR'd up there the last two years so hopefully I can do it again.' Advertisement GALA senior DeAuna Louis also repeated as champion in both the 100 hurdles (14.87) and 300 hurdles (46.12) after posting the fastest times in preliminaries. 'I'm definitely faster this year ... my PR is 14.46 and I was going for the City record in the 100 but came up short,' said Louis, who is headed to Hampton University in Virginia for academics but plans to walk-on in track. 'I was seventh in the 300 and 10th in the 100 at state last spring. My goal is to make the finals in both.' Granada Hills' Savannah Williams won the girls 400 in 57.22 and North Hollywood's Ananya Balaraman won the 1,600 meters in 5 minutes 3.75 seconds and later took the lead in the last 40 meters to win the 800 in 2:16.90. Santee's Angeles Feliciano won the girls 3,200 in 11:25.75 and Charles Simon won the boys 3,200 in 9:38.77. Carson took the 4x400 girls race in 4:02.77 and Palisades (3:23.98) barely edged Granada Hills (3:24.15) in the boys' race. Kensinger was on the football team in ninth and 10th grade, playing defensive end as a freshman and defensive tackle as a sophomore. 'My goal at state is to make the second day,' added Kensinger, whose best throw was 55-9 at City prelims last year. 'Sixty feet for my junior year would be a dream.
