Hundreds of homes without power after substation destroyed by fire
An electrical substation in the centre of Exeter has been destroyed by fire, leaving hundreds of properties without power.
Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said it was called to the scene, off Fore Street, shortly after 6am on Sunday.
Around 25 people were evacuated from nearby properties as crews worked to bring the fire under control.
The service said the external electrical substation was destroyed by the blaze, while four adjacent properties were also affected by fire and heat.
The National Grid said 281 homes were without power as of 10am on Sunday morning. Power had been restored to 615 homes.
The provider said the outage was caused by 'third party damage' to its network, with power not expected to be restored to all properties until 9pm.
Riverside Leisure Centre is being used as a respite centre for displaced residents.
In a post on X, the fire service said the blaze is 'causing lots of smoke in the area'.
It added: 'Please keep your windows and doors closed if you live in the area.
'You may also experience some disruption to your electricity supply.'
Six fire engines were initially sent to the incident along with police and the ambulance service. Two crews remain at the scene.
The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.
The incident comes after a substation serving Heathrow Airport caught fire in March, forcing it to close to all flights for many hours and disrupting more than 270,000 air passenger journeys.

A HORROR blaze has ripped through a warehouse after rechargeable batteries caught fire. Fire crews scrambled to the scene of the blaze in Middleton, Manchester, which took place after lithium batteries were set alight inside a storage unit. Eight fire engines and "special appliances" were sent to tackle the developing blaze at around 4.50pm this afternoon. Pictures from the scene show thick smoke billowing into the sky. Others showed a number of gas-masked firefighters using specialised equipment to gain entry to the storage unit. Locals have been told to keep doors and windows closed as a safety precaution. Eyewitnesses have reported seeing several fire crews in attendance, with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) confirming that eight appliances were sent to tackle the blaze. A fire service spokesperson said: "Firefighters are currently tackling a fire involving a storage unit at a commercial premises on Old Hall Street, Middleton. "Nearby residents are advised to keep their windows and doors closed with some surrounding roads also closed." A GMFRS representative on scene told the MEN that firefighters are "urrently carrying out firefighting internally and externally" in a bid to extinguish lithium ion batteries inside a storage unit.

Funds being raised for woman (85) whose thatched cottage burned down in Cork
Close to €6,000 has been raised to purchase a mobile home for an 85-year-old woman whose thatched cottage near Inch in Killeagh, Co Cork, was totally destroyed by fire. Margaret Adams moved to Ireland from the UK two decades ago. She lived 'very happily' in her beautiful little home with her rescue donkeys, dogs, and ducks. Advertisement Unfortunately, a fire broke out at the property on the morning of March 20th last. Margaret was fortunate to escape with her life as the blaze took hold so quickly. Her friend Bernie Fleming says that the 'quick actions' of a neighbour led to the saving of dogs Misty and Freddie. The dogs are the the pride and joy of the kind hearted pensioner. The other animals owned by Ms Adams were not in the cottage when the fire started. Advertisement However, Ms Fleming says sadly Margaret lost all of her other possessions. 'Everything she ever owned. All her memories were gone. It was a terrible ordeal for her. As Margaret had no relatives in Ireland she went back to the UK to her brother temporarily but she now wishes to return to her own place again. Sadly she had no insurance on her home. It was a thatched house and the company she was with prior weren't covering homes with thatch anymore. Advertisement She is now in a situation where she cannot afford to rebuild it so she is hoping to get a mobile home for which she has only a tiny budget. This is far from ideal for Margaret at (close to) 86 years of age plus health issues.' Ms Fleming says that Margaret has been hospitalised a few times in the past year. She indicates that funds are being raised to get a 'good mobile home' with heating, double glazing and possibly insulation. 'It is going to be very difficult and so very sad for her when she returns again to the ruins of what was once her beautiful home.' She adds that all local people want to do is raise funds to get Margaret a little place where she can feel 'comfortable and happy again' with her beloved dogs as it is her 'dearest wish' to get back to them.
