Father forced to carry disabled son up to first floor flat in Widnes to move into new adapted home
A father who was forced to carry his disabled son up a flight of stairs to their first floor flat is to move into a new adapted home.
Stephen Murray was living with four sons in his one bedroom flat where they are all had to sleep in the same room.
After his story was featured on ITV Granada Reports, the family were moved into hotel accommodation and told there was a property they could move into that is being adapted to their needs.
It is a four-bedroomed house and assessments will be carried out on whether seven-year-old Harry, who has cerebral palsy, will be able to use the stairlift to access a wet room or if an adapted lift will be needed.
Stephen said he had been "despairing" living in the cramped flat in Widnes, Cheshire, and worried about how long he would be able to carry Harry upstairs.
"Within 24 hours our situation had changed", Stephen said. "We were moved to a hotel and told the property we had wanted, was going to be ours and was being adapted.
"It is close to the children's school and we can start moving forwards with our lives'.
A Halton Housing spokesperson said: "Since the change in Mr Murray's circumstances we have continued to work tirelessly alongside other agencies to find an alternative home for Mr Murray and his family.
"We are pleased to confirm that a suitable property has now been identified and is currently being adapted to meet this family's specific needs.
"We anticipate that Mr Murray and his family will be able to move into their new home this week and we will continue to support them in any way we can."
For seven months, Mr Murray had been searching every night on the Housing Association's property pool.
Speaking last week, Stephen said he'd felt like was getting no support, adding: "I had to take my children away from the situation they were in to give them a better life, but I feel like they've gone backwards.
"They're frozen in time because there's so much they should be getting but they're not. There's no light at the end of the tunnel, it's just getting dimmer and dimmer."
Stephen was concerned his son's health was being affected by the limited space and not being able to use his son's specialist wheelchair, leg braces and upright stand in the flat.
Most people with cerebral palsy have mobility issues, but regular exercise and play are crucial for maintaining and improving their physical strength.
Stephen said: "The physio said it's getting worse and it could get to a point where he won't be able to stretch his legs out.
"He gets in the bath, but he's bruising his legs. With a wet room he'd be in his wheelchair and have a proper shower. It'd be so much easier."

Stephen Fry gives rare insight into relationship with younger husband
Celebrity Traitors contestant Stephen Fry opened up to Rylan Clark about his marriage to Elliott Spencer on the latest episode of the BBC Sounds podcast How to Be in Love Broadcaster Stephen Fry has given a rare insight into his marriage to Elliott Spencer after more than a decade together. It's included him revealing that he has discovered aspects of pop culture through his younger husband. Stephen, 67, and Elliott, 38, have been together since 2013. The couple celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary earlier this year and the former QI host described himself as "a lucky man" in a post marking the occasion in January. The Blackadder star has now spoken about his marriage whilst a guest on the BBC Sounds podcast Rylan: How to Be in Love. He was interviewed by host Rylan Clark, 36, for the latest episode, which was released earlier today. Stephen was asked about the age gap between the couple and said he "stopped thinking about it". He went on to suggest in the discussion that a younger partner can be "more experienced in the world as it is than as it was". The comedian, who said that he has "completely different tastes in things" compared to his husband Elliott, added: "So much of what I love in music and literature and so on is from not necessarily this century. It isn't from this century." Asked how that plays out, he said: "It's wonderful." Stephen then revealed that Elliott has introduced him to rapper Kendrick Lamar and wrestling brand WWE, for example, with him sharing that he's now a fan of them himself. Stephen said of his husband: "He teaches me things I just didn't know. He introduced me to Kendrick Lamar, which was a great thing to do because [he's] I've decided is a great poetical spirit - a really remarkable figure." He continued: "So that, plus, now you're really going to laugh here, because I thought 'is he insane?' He has a great affection for, and I guess you could call it ironic, but it's real, for WWE." Stephen - who is set to compete on Celebrity Traitors later this year - said that Elliott introduced him to the "cast of characters" in wrestling, whom he described as "bloody talented". Asked if he's a fan now, he said: "I kind of am." He added that he's even bought tickets for WrestleMania in Las Vegas. Asked about the "secret" to a "successful" ten-year marriage, Stephen said that every relationship is different. He said that each relationship is "brand new" and has "never been seen before," adding: "So I can tell you how to have a successful relationship with Elliott, but that's probably not very helpful." Sharing his thoughts, he added: "All the normal human virtues, some of which are forgotten virtues, but one of the most important human virtues I think isn't even really considered a virtue, but it is one that changes the world. "It's not kindness, which obviously is important, but it's a subset of kindness, perhaps. And it's cheerfulness. When you're in the presence of a cheerful person it makes everything better. They're like their own sunshine. So that's one of the things - if one is down to help the other come up."

Although the show is coming back for a second series, Holly will not be returning as co-host. You Bet! viewers will see the star again nonetheless - as she's appearing as a guest panelist this time around. Renamed You Bet! On Tour, Stephen will take over solo hosting duties for the second outing. Advertisement Also confirmed for guest appearances are Rob Beckett, Josh Widdicombe, Zoe Ball, Rylan Clark and Babatunde Aleshe. Each instalment of the seven-episode series - including a Christmas special - will take place a different location across the country. Once again, the celebrity panel must decide whether or not challengers will complete their task. Last month, Stephen opened up about continuing on as host without Holly. Advertisement Chatting to TV Biz, he said: 'I'm gutted she's not doing You Bet! with me, but I've had time to think about it and Bruce Forsyth was the first person to do You Bet! and he did it on his own. 'Matthew Kelly made it the best show on the telly. You Bet fans complain as iconic show fronted by Holly Willoughby and Stephen Mulhern returns with missing feature 'And every time I've been interviewed and they say, 'What show would you bring back?', I've always said 'You Bet!'. 'So maybe it happened for a reason. We've filmed one episode already without Holly, and it felt very comfortable. Maybe it is just a one-presenter show. Advertisement "I don't know what happened. She just said, 'Look, sorry, I can't do it'. She told me face to face. She said, 'Look, I'm gutted but it's all over'." The pair's other show, Dancing on Ice was shelved earlier this year with no plans for a new series, as revealed by The Sun. Stephen Mulhern's career so far The presenter is a mainstay on various ITV shows, but how did he become one of Britain's most well-known faces? Stephen first gained an interest in magic and tricks from his father who taught him as a kid. After performing at Butlins, he became the youngest member of the Magic Circle and even made an appearance on Blue Peter in a piece about Harry Houdini. His career started in Children's TV when he presenter the show Finger Tips in 2001. After four years, he launched Tricky TV on CITV in 2005, which he presented until 2010. During this time, he was handpicked by bosses to front the ITV2 spin-off for Britain's Got Talent. He presented Britain's Got More Talent until the cancelation of the companion in 2019. But it's not all bad news for Stephen who is known for his duties on a number of quiz shows. In for a Penny, a format originally launched on Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway was launched the same year. Before, he was chosen by bosses to host Catchphrase in 2013 and has been fronting the show ever since. Other huge shows he presented for ITV included Big Star's Little Star, Rolling In It and the reboot of Deal Or No Deal. He also made regular appearances on This Morning in 'The Hub' segment between 2011 and 2014. After the Philip Schofield scandal rocked ITV, he was chosen to reunite with his former CITV co-star Holly Willoughby as the host of Dancing on Ice. It came as Coronation Street's Sam Aston - aka Chesney Brown - won the latest outing. An ITV Spokesperson said: "Following another successful series earlier this year, Dancing On Ice will be rested in 2026 with no current plans for another series. Advertisement "We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the cast and crew who have worked on the show since 2006, and over the previous 17 series, for all of their hard work both on and off the ice." You Bet! airs on ITV1 and ITVX.
