Title: Preamble
Content: Earlier this week, the DP World Tour socials collared a few pros and asked them what an 18-handicapper would shoot at Oakmont this week. The most generous estimate was 120; Bryson DeChambeau guessed 100, but that's just on the front nine. Several of them were certain they'd have to walk in, having lost all of their balls.
As for the pros? Take the last couple of US Opens to be held here. Angel Cabrera won in 2007 with a final total of +5. In 2016, Shane Lowry held a four-stroke lead going into the final round only to shoot 76 and let Dustin Johnson in. This place – the jungle rough, the upturned-saucer greens, the excitable needle on the stimpmeter – makes mincemeat of the best of them. The lowest winning total at a US Open here is -5, and it took Ben Hogan to manage that, for goodness sake. (To be fair, Johnny Miller and Ernie Els won with -5 as well, Miller shooting the first-ever 63 in a major while doing so, but let's not cloud the issue.)
So this should be fun. Yes it will. Here are the tee times (USA unless stated, all times BST, (a) denotes amateur). It's on!

Rays storm back in 6-run 6th, halt Mets' win streak

June 14 - Danny Jansen's two-run homer capped a six-run sixth inning Friday night as the Tampa Bay Rays handed the New York Mets a rare home loss with a 7-5 decision in the opener of a three-game set. Jansen's sixth homer of the year scored Kameron Misner and made a winner of former New York pitcher Eric Orze (1-0), who earned his first MLB win with an inning of scoreless relief. Four other Rays relievers made it through the final four innings, with Pete Fairbanks pitching the ninth for his 13th save in 15 chances. Fairbanks stranded men at the corners, slipping a called third strike by Ronny Mauricio to end it. Max Kranick (3-2), making his first appearance for the Mets after being recalled from Triple-A Syracuse earlier Friday, was tagged with the loss. It was just New York's eighth defeat in 35 games at Citi Field this year and snapped its six-game winning streak. Singles by Brandon Lowe, Yandy Diaz and Jonathan Aranda off Paul Blackburn started the uprising in the sixth. After Junior Caminero popped up, Jake Mangum stroked a two-run single to center and Jose Caballero grounded out to score Aranda. Misner poked a game-tying single to left and stole second before Jansen's blast. Neither starter was involved in the decision. Tampa Bay's Taj Bradley lasted four-plus innings, yielding four hits and five unearned runs with four walks and five strikeouts. New York's Clay Holmes left with a 5-1 lead after allowing three hits and a run in five innings, walking two and whiffing three. Holmes coughed up a solo homer to Aranda, his eighth of the year, to start the fourth. But the Mets quickly wiped out the lead thanks to some clutch hitting from Starling Marte and some shaky Rays defense. Bradley's error set the stage for a two-run New York fourth that featured Marte lashing an RBI infield single off Bradley's leg to tie it. Tyrone Taylor reached on a fielder's choice to score the tiebreaking run. Two walks sandwiched around Aranda's error at first teed up the Mets in the fifth. Juan Soto drew a bases-filled walk to knock in a run, followed by Marte's two-out, two-run single to left-center. --Field Level Media

Gleyber Torres, Riley Greene slug Tigers past Reds

June 14 - Riley Greene homered and drove in four runs, Gleyber Torres blasted a pair of solo homers and the host Detroit Tigers rolled past the Cincinnati Reds, 11-5, on Friday. Torres drove in three runs while Javier Baez had three hits, including a homer, scored three runs and drove in two more. Jake Rogers added two hits and drove in two runs. Keider Montero (3-1) gave up two runs in five innings to pick up the win. TJ Friedl and Elly Da La Cruz homered for Cincinnati. De La Cruz and Tyler Stephenson each had three hits and two RBIs. Nick Martinez (4-7) gave up four runs in five innings in the loss. Torres, leading off the bottom of the first, ambushed the first pitch he saw from Martinez, smacking a fastball over the left field wall. Detroit left two runners stranded in the second. Friedl then led off the third by ripping a hanging Montero slider over the right field wall. With two out in the third, Greene crushed a Martinez fastball over the visitors' bullpen in left-center field to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead. The Reds squandered an opportunity in the fourth. Singles by Spencer Steer, Connor Joe and Matt McLain loaded the bases with two out. Friedl popped up a 2-2 fastball from Montero to leave them stranded. Baez gave Detroit some breathing room in the bottom of the inning when he lofted a Martinez changeup that bounced off the top of the left field wall and into the stands. De La Cruz made it 3-2 in the fifth when he pounded a knuckle curve over the right field wall. The Tigers pushed across four runs in the sixth for a 7-2 advantage. Walks to Baez and Rogers, sandwiching a Zach McKinstry single, loaded the bases with no outs. Torres hit a sacrifice fly to score Baez. Jahmai Jones reached on an infield single to load the bases again and Greene cleared them with a line drive double to left. Torres' second homer of the game came against Ian Gibaut in the seventh. Rogers had two RBIs in a three-run eighth. --Field Level Media

Braves blast Rockies thanks to HRs from Michael Harris II, Marcell Ozuna

June 14 - Michael Harris II and Marcell Ozuna both hit late-inning three-run homers to help the Atlanta Braves come back and defeat the visiting Colorado Rockies 12-4 on Friday in the opener of their three-game series. Atlanta has won three of four and Colorado has lost six of its last seven. Atlanta leads the season series 3-1. Atlanta tied the game 4-4 with two outs in the sixth inning when Harris hit a three-run homer, his sixth, into the right field seats off reliever Jake Bird, who had not allowed an earned run in his last 10 outings. It was the third time in six games that Harris has homered. Ozuna gave the Braves the lead in the seventh with two out. His home run, his 11th and first since June 1, against reliever Victor Vodnik (1-2) landed in the front row of the left-field bleachers. He added a sacrifice fly in the eighth. The winning pitcher was Enyel De Los Santos (2-2). Raisel Iglesias and Dylan Lee both pitched a scoreless inning to finish the game. Neither starting pitcher figured in the decision. Atlanta's Bryce Elder pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits, three walks and two strikeouts. Colorado's German Marquez worked five innings and allowed one run on six hits, one walk and seven strikeouts. The Rockies scored two runs in the first inning when Ryan McMahon caught a center-cut changeup and drove it 441 feet to dead center field for a two-run homer. It was McMahon's ninth home run, the third in his last six games. He went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. The Braves got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Ronald Acuna Jr. scored on Matt Olson's sacrifice fly to shallow left field. Acuna went 3-for-4 and stole his first base of the season. Colorado scored two more times in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead and knocked Elder out of the game. Hunter Goodman and McMahon both had RBI singles. The Braves iced the game with five runs in the eighth inning, a rally fueled by three Colorado errors. --Field Level Media
